My dog got a pretty nasty anal gland infection recently. It’s the first time he’s ever had an issue like that and is on a good diet. The vet said that can happen to dogs that don’t get enough fiber in their diet. Especially little dogs like I have. She recommended this product and said that it works great and dogs seem to like it. I basically ordered some when I was in the waiting room and as soon as I got it I started giving it to my dog. He already has a somewhat sensitive stomach and the antibiotics were giving runny stools. I was worried this stuff in his food would make it worse but it actually helped a lot. Of course with probiotics after he was done taking his antibiotics. This product has been amazing. He hasn’t had any issues with his anal glands or wanting to scoot at all since I’ve been feeding him this. But he’s also on a probiotic regiment too. Like I said he’s got a notoriously sensitive stomach but since starting this fiber product and probiotics he can pretty much eat anything without having diarrhea. Which I’m really thankful for since he would have diarrhea on our fully carpeted apartment. It’s really frustrating to have to clean up after that all the time if he accidentally got ahold of some tiny piece of food I accidentally dropped while cooking for example or if a family member didn’t listen to me when I told them no table scraps. Now I don’t have to worry about it. It’s surprising how little powder you need to use. I thought I’d go through a container pretty quickly but since my dog is 14lbs it’s probably going to last a long time. And since this is safe for dogs and cats I can also give it to my cat too if he ever needs it. My dog loves the flavor of it too. Before when we would feed him just plain kibble he wouldn’t really eat his food in one sitting and would kind of much on it throughout the day. But since he loves how this stuff tastes and with it being a powder that coats his kibble he can’t eat around the kibble and ends up actually eating his food in one go. His tummy seems a lot happier and his stool is more firm without it being too hard. I also noticed it smells a lot less stinky. Which I’m not sure if it’s this product or the probiotics or maybe both. Either way both of those together really seem to help his tummy sensitivity. I really recommend this product.     • A Bit Expensive, But Seems to Work

My dog has been having issues with the anal glands of late. We've had to have them drained twice within six month's time. The vet said that some breeds just tend to have more anal gland issues than others. But, I want to see if there was something I could do at home to address this, since I've never had another dog with this issue. I decided to try this product. I used the chews first, which seemed to work well, so I decided to try the powder form, just to cut back on the number of chews my dog gets in a day. This seems to work just as well. I put it in her food in the mornings and she doesn't even notice it's there. She hasn't had the glands expressed since the summer and seems to be doing well on it. ... show more

Like most dogs, our threesome would do the 'scoots' every now and then. It's a sign that their anal glands should be expressed. So, what in the world are anal glands? They're small sacs just inside the anus. They contain an odorous fluid that animals use to mark territory. When dogs and cats (and mammals in general) defecate, the stool presses against the anal glands to drain some of that fluid. That fluid is the "perfume" to mark the territory. Tidbit... When skunks spray, that fluid comes from the anal glands. When the stool is too soft, the anal gland isn't squeezed enough to force the gland to secrete any fluid. If it continues to fill without being drained, the gland becomes pressure-packed which leads to irritation, even pain. That's when you see the scooting. (When left untreated, the anal gland may rupture. If it ruptures, bacteria may enter the bloodstream and lead to sepsis (septic shock), then death, painful death. So, although it may look funny to see them "scoot," don't ignore it.) Over the course of a year, multiple expressions for each of our three dogs isn't cheap, so I asked our vet if there was something that I could do to minimize/reduce its recurrence. Glandex was the recommendation. Glandex adds fiber into the diet to make the stool firm enough to express the anal glands how nature intended. I purchased the 5.5 ounce bottle and have been adding the recommended dosage into their dinners every day going on 5 months. There's still about an inch remaining in the bottle, so it should last another couple of months. Yes, they're little so they get Glandex's smallest daily dose. So, does it work? Yes, I "believe" it has made a difference. I use "believe" because, as objective as I consider myself, it's still my opinion based on my subjective observation and experience. Am I rationalizing, projecting, and seeing what I want to see to justify the purchase? Is wishful thinking casting a veil on my objectivity, and am I forcing a square into a triangle? I don't think it's wishful thinking. I'm seeing less "scooting," so it must be working. (Note that I said LESS, because it still happens, albeit much, much less than before Glandex was introduced into their diet.) Again, this wasn't a lab experiment conducted in a controlled environment under controlled conditions, it's my opinion. NOTE. For the last month, one from our threesome has been receiving a daily dose that's less than the recommended minimum. Why? Because it appeared that she was struggling a bit to defecate. Not quite constipated, but not a smoooooth exit. So, OBSERVE and ADJUST. BEWARE. Performed correctly, anal gland expressions are super safe, but one-in-a-million does happen. Our neighbor lost one of their dogs after an expression by their vet went bad. Their dog got really sick within a day or two after that visit, went into septic shock, and died. Unbeknownst to anyone, the anal gland had been ruptured when it was expressed. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, I IMPLORE YOU. Take your companions for regular exams and treatments. Don't let treatable conditions, like anal glands, go untreated. I know vet costs have become very, very expensive, WAY TOO EXPENSIVE, but regular veterinary visits are necessary for a good quality of life, a pain-free life. Don't neglect their healthcare, especially dental care which can cause excruciating pain. Don't let that happen. They, each and every one of them, deserve happy lives. ... show more
