  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Met all expectations
Almost like not being in the room, the noise level is so low. I felt impact immediately, would recommend to anyone especially this year and for all those with allergy challenges.

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars GermGuardian AC5000E 3-in-1 Air Cleaning System vs. Honeywell HHT-090
GermGuardian AC5000E 3-in-1 Air Cleaning System with True HEPA Filter, UV-C and Odor Reduction vs. Honeywell HHT-090 Permanent Hepa Filter Tower Air Purifier My boyfriend and I live in an approximately 600 sq. ft. first floor apartment in Washington, DC. Boyfriend has seasonal allergies as well as moderate cat allergies, so when we adopted two kittens, we bought both models reviewed here, based on their Amazon reviews. We've had and used both 24/7 for over two months. Currently the GermGuardian is in our living room, near the litter box, and the Honeywell is in the bedroom, where we don't allow the cats. *Quality/Appearance* When the Honeywell arrived, after a few weeks of using the GermGuardian, our first reaction was "Wow this looks like the cheap version of the GermGuardian." The GermGuardian has a much sleeker appearance and just looks more expensive (despite being about the same price when we bought it.) I personally don't mind the appearance of either and was not bothered by the GermGuardian's UV light the way some reviewers were, since turning it on is completely optional. Since the GermGuardian now lives in the living room, we keep the UV light on at night but haven't noticed a difference. I do like the ionizer function on the Honeywell, and noticed that it makes the bedroom smell cleaner. Winner: GermGuardian *On Seasonal Allergies* We had the GermGuardian for a few weeks before the cats and the Honeywell, and moved it between the living room (daytime - on highest setting) and bedroom (nighttime - lowest setting). Boyfriend immediately noticed a difference in sleeping. He woke up less stuffy when we used it in the bedroom at night, and I've noticed that it noticeably eliminates odors in the living room. We now have the Honeywell permanently on in the bedroom and Boyfriend has found that it still helps manage seasonal allergies, but doesn't appear to be as good as the GermGuardian. This is less than scientific, as we haven't tested both separately during high-pollen season. Winner: GermGuardian *On Pet Allergies* It depends on the severity of allergies and the other measures you take to alleviate your home of dust and dander. Boyfriend has moderate allergies to our cats, but some days are better than others. We hope the air filters are helping to some degree, but are afraid to do a test run without them. A friend with much more severe allergies came over after we'd had both purifiers running (and after a thorough cleaning, even) and had a miserable stuffy nose because of the cats. The filters help, but are not the only solution. If you have pet allergies, make sure you're doing everything else in addition to these devices -- including vacuuming your furniture and mopping/dusting regularly. Winner: Tie. *Noise/Airflow* Both purifiers have three settings. For both, the low and mid settings are unobtrusive and provide decent white noise. Make sure that you open up the Honeywell when you receive it to TAKE OFF the plastic covering the filters. We did not realize we had to do this at first. The GermGuardian comes ready to use. Both have decent airflow but are not as powerful as a fan. The Honeywell instructions say to keep it 3 feet from any wall but I think that is ridiculous to make it your room's centerpiece. Some reviewers said that their devices started to rattle after a few months. Having kept both devices on 24/7 for about two months, I haven't noticed anything like that. Winner: Tie *Smell/Odor reduction* A lot of reviewers on both purifiers complained noticing a burning plastic smell when they first turned it on. Both air purifiers had a slight odor like the one described, but both dissipated completely after about a week of continuous use, with open windows when possible. Both do a great job of odor reduction. The GermGuardian is in the living room near the litter box (cleaned daily) and we rarely notice an odor. The Honeywell in the bedroom is great at combating that stale-air bedroom smell that would otherwise be a problem for us, given that we keep the door closed at all times to keep the cats out. Winner: Tie. *Cleaning* The GermGuardian has a true HEPA filter, which needs to be replaced every six months at about $50 a pop. The Honeywell has a not-HEPA filter, which you can clean with a vacuum attachment. I haven't had to clean or replace either, yet, but I think the Honeywell wins the thrifty category. Winner: Honeywell Overall, the GermGuardian has a lot more going for it than the Honeywell. Despite being slightly more expensive, it's probably worth the money for a well-working, solid device. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Love this Hepa filter
I have 3 of these hepa filters that I have in bought over the last 10 years. They are space saving and really clean the air. Easy to change filters.

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely worth every penny
I am very picky about air purifiers. I was afraid to try anything new. I have two of the same kind in my house now. This air purifier is great and very quiet compared to my others. I can have it on high at all times which I like because I have two cats. All three of mine work as far as pulling in dust balls and cat hair. I love them all equally and they get the job done, so this one is the best because it is a lot quieter. I would buy another. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars good filter but
I am contemplating whether or not this is a 5 star product. The full length UV bulb is necessary for filtration. Where the lower priced version only has a front facing UV on the exterior that won't do much for disinfecting. I have this running full time. I live in a one bedroom apartment but it doesn't do much to eliminate dust. A big reason for this is that my two cats track around a lot of dirt and shed a lot. The carbon prefilter collects a lot of cat hair an luckily you just have to blow it out quick or do a quick vacuum to remove the hair. I have the filter placed next to the cat litter boxes and I feel that this has significantly reduced pet odors from the boxes. I use a premium natural litter that has low odor. Arm&Hammer and other commercial litters just use perfumes for odor control that I am too sensitive to. Back to the star rating. I feel it does a great job for reducing household odors without using sprays that increases air pollution further. But I have not found a noticeable amount of dust reduction Noise level on level 1 is whisper quiet. Level 3 will be a typical medium to high fan noise. It isn't obnoxious but it would be distracting during a tv program or having guests over. It is strong enough you will notice air circulation. So I might need to have it at that speed full time to get proper air filtration. so keep that in mind when considering this filter. Turn it on high when you are not home, low when you are home. I haven't had it long enough to see if it has influenced my utility bill. Update. after 5 months of use. It is now due for a filter change. for a one bedroom apartment with two cats. The carbon filter traps nearly all the cat hair. This does need a a little vacuum to keep clear about once a month. The filter change light is now flashing red after 5 months. whether this is on a timer or from sensing restricted air movement. Im not sure. HOWEVER, this is my critique. I still have significant dust and hair issues throughout the apartment. I have a central air system and over each duct I have a patch of light duty filter material to capture initial dust from incoming air. With those and the filter for the entry air for the independent system for my apartment alone I should be capturing most issues. I am not. I still get lots of hair and dust on EVERYTHING. This filter does capture some stuff as the filter has become dirty over time. But the effectiveness is only par. You would really want about 1 of these for every 350 sq ft at bare minimum to keep clean air. I do notice though a reduction in odor from the liter box, which this is near, and odor reduction from the UV light is what this is intended for. But still I probably would need two of these for my place. Would I recommend it? Maybe. Would I buy one again. probably. but not definitely. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars A great air cleaner!
This is the third air cleaner I have purchased to use in my guest room. I have one downstairs and one in my bedroom. I have been using these for over 3 years and am very pleased with them. They do a great job filtering out dust, mold, germs, and have made a huge difference for the better with my allergies. ... show more
