  • Best small chipper for the money
The GardenBeaut R30 chipper is a top choice for small lots (10,000 sq. feet or less) due to its excellent performance and low cost. It's designed specifically for chipping woody (with emphasis) branches, not shredding soft green vegetation (such as vines) or leaves. If soft green vegetation or leaves are dumped into the hopper, clogging might result. I chose this chipper due to its generous throat size. This chipper has one of the largest throat openings for a small chipper. The throat is the narrowest constriction point at the bottom of the funnel before wood branches meet the blades. The throat on the GardenBeaut R30 is a very generous 4.75"x5.5". The large throat allows shrubs, gnarly tree branches, and branches with many side branches sticking out to easily feed through the chipper throat. The GardenBeaut R30 offers not just superior performance but also unmatched convenience. With no belts or clutches to replace, it's a direct drive chipper with double-sided blades. Its self-feeding action is remarkably efficient, and starting it is a breeze, thanks to the light mass of the drum. Its portability is a bonus, with its weight and compactness making it easy to move around. The hinged funnel can pivot up, minimizing storage space and adding to its user-friendly design. Some minor annoyances: The hopper is hinged and mates with the chipping chamber, but the hopper is not aligned perfectly with the chipping chamber. As a result, a small unintended lip at the junction between the hopper and the chipping chamber causes tree branches to constantly get caught at the lip, requiring jiggling to get past that lip. Additionally, there's an approximately 1" wide internal lip (or flange) all the way around the throat, preventing branches from smoothly feeding into the chipping blades. It makes no sense to have those wide lips at the throat preventing branches from being fed smoothly into the chipping chamber. Those lips are a very HUGE annoyance. It can easily handle hardwood up to 2" in diameter. I wouldn't feed a 3" trunk into it unless it's very soft wood. For 2" tree branches or larger, the best way to feed it is not to allow the blades to self-feed the branch too aggressively because doing so could stall the engine. Instead, let the blades chew a large branch several inches in length at a time while holding back the branch with your hands. Then, push the branch down and let the blades chew another few inches. Repeat this process until the large branch is chipped all the way. The annoyance with the lips in the hopper aside, I still highly recommend this chipper for small lots up to 10,000 sq. ft. ... show more

  • Better design and available replacement parts
I bought the GardenBeaut R30 chipper when after a few years of light use the rotating blade holder on my LandWorks Mini Chipper came apart due to a weld failure and I couldn't find a replacement part. The green GardenBeaut R30 and orange EFCUT R0 chippers seem identical other than brand name and color (both are listed on the efcut website and have the exact same replacement part numbers), so I chose the less expensive of the two. Unlike my other (now broken) chipper, this design has its cutting blades located on the edges of a rotating drum instead of on the side of a rotating cylinder, which is more like the way commercial chippers operate and (in my experience) works much better for chipping. This GardenBeaut really is a beast that can actually handle 3-inch diameter limbs if you slow down the feed, which produces much larger wood chips. Smaller limbs usually just auto-feed. I chose the efcut brand because their website has chipper replacement parts. LandWorks sells a similar design (edge-mounted blades), but I didn't want to use them again because of the weld problems I encountered and lack of replacement parts. Another advantage of GardenBeaut R30 is two-sided blades and a straightforward procedure to rotate or replace them -- my other chipper used single-edge blades that were a royal pain to change. The 7 hp motors of the two chippers seem comparable and start easily. I will say the recommended 15W-40 motor oil (the weight used for diesel engines) was a bit hard to find. The GardenBeaut assembly instructions were easy to follow because for each numbered step the parts were contained in a numbered plastic bag. So, if you are mostly chipping limbs, I highly recommend the GardenBeaut R30 (vs. S3) style of chipper (blades on the edge instead of side of the rotating cylinder) and commend the efcut company for their attention to detail, good design, and availability of replacement parts. ... show more

  • Works as expected.
Assembly was pretty straightforward; images were a bit small but able to figure out. Started in one pull and aggressively chips branches. 3" branches are a stretch but 2" & below, this chipper works well. I have used for about 6 total hours and will be changing the knives around soon; have two sharpened sides. So far, this chipper appears to be put together well and is a good value. ... show more

  • Never started
I followed the instructions from the book, and followed a video by a YouTuber, and it never started. This, after I spent a bunch of time researching alternatives to SE oil and ethanol-free fuel and going from store to store and calling around because either places didn't have what I needed, or they couldn't understand what I was requesting. A huge waste of time and money. Buy American-made or from an actual store. I'm tempted to go to Harbor Freight, even though I'm not fully confident in their wood chipper. At least I'll know I can talk to customer service people face-to-face. I tried calling customer service for Chongqing Rato Technology on the back of the instruction book, but they aren't open Saturdays--the day you are most likely to use this piece of ****. ... show more
