The First Alert 5200DF Portable Handgun or Pistol Safe is an ideal portable solution for safeguarding your firearm and ammunition. Constructed with durable 18-gauge powder-coated steel, this gun safe features a foam-lined interior to protect contents during storage. The home safe offers an electronic keypad with a programmable three- to eight-digit "no-see" passcode, as well as a spring-loaded locking door mechanism to allow for quick access in the event of an emergency. I've gone through the first battery change and they didn't even need to be replaced. I've had it for many months and open it frequently about once or twice a week. Overall I am happy with it and don't expect to have issues going forward. When I replaced the batteries I had to reprogram the code, unfortunately. Other than that no complaints. Note that this safe is not a fortress by any means. It will work well enough against a quick smash and grab if you use the provided cable and attach it to your bed frame, etc. But anyone with enough time will get through it. If you're concerned about being away from home for a long time then put your valuables in a better safe and hide it well in your house. Honestly I haven't had kids try and attempt to play with it and open it. So it's not like I tested it against that kind of thing. This is a very good safe for the size and money. I got it to fit in a nightstand where I put my Glock 26. The gun fits no problem and there is room for spare mags. It feels very secure and its a good solid metal. I have much more expensive gun safes in my house and this one feels nearly as good. I have seen some cheap safes that do not feel as good as this one. I like the combo setting. It seems to work well and there is a back up key if it doesnt work. The reason I gave this 4 stars is because it doesn't tell you when the battery is going. I make sure to test the safe every night before I go to bed. I would not go a month without testing it. I do not trust batteries and I don't trust electronics when it comes to life and death situations so please test this safe a lot. As far as how easy is it to break in? I haven't tried and I did some searches and didn't come up with anything. Based on my experience with other gun safes - they are deterrents. If someone wants in they will get in. But if you have a kid/teenager the only way they are breaking in is to break/ruin the safe so if they are the type of kid to do that you really need one of the safes that doesn't move and is nearly impossible to crack. Otherwise this type of safe is very good and will keep a kid out who searches your drawer but won't spend time trying to break into the safe. Teaching your kids about firearms is much more important than keeping a gun locked up. I dont think any of the safes in this price range or even a few hundred dollars more are going to be any better or give you extra protection. If you need something better you need to jump up into the $1000 price range and look at the top brands out there. ... show more

    • Not Suitable for Bedside Use

I purchased this to use to keep hand guns away from kids and to have fast access to the guns at night if an intruder entered my home. This safe will work ok for one of the reasons that I purchased it for but not the other. It will work to place in an area other than my bedroom to lock guns in while I am up and the kids are around the house. I would not use it for quick access to my firearm at night. Here are the reasons it will not work for me personally for a place to keep my gun while sleeping. First it is not silent. It makes noise when pushing the keys and when opening the top. Also it is a 2 hand operation to access this safe. Once the electronic code is entered the top pops up very slightly, but from there it has to be opened manually by hand. It takes 2 hands to open the top as the top is considerably heavy. The top also has to be held open while retrieving the pistol or if let go it will slam open as it has nothing to hold the top from free falling. The key pads are not back lit so they would have to be found by feeling to find the 4 buttons which do have groves to assist in finding them. I need a safe by my bed that I can see back lit quiet keys on and when opened the door quietly opens on its own and doesn't free fall. Easy non fumbling one hand quiet access is a must if I am awakened in the night and have to go for my pistol. I realize that I will have to pay more for a safe that does have the features that I need. Just some information in case you are looking for a bed side gun safe. ... show more

I am amazed by this item. It's pretty sturdy, really heavy and makes me sleep at nite. I like that it comes with the security wire so you can strap it to a fixed object to get that added sense of security FOR FREE !!!! If you input two wrong finger combos it will lock you out for a couple minutes, so make sure you have your lock key nearby. If you have Asian hands like me, then the pinky button will be hard to use without lifting up your hand to reach over. Its really heavy to constantly bring it with you. When I go out I bring this safe and strap it to the underside of my back seat chair because there are metal parts there that will hold this thing in place. I dont want someone to break my car windows and run off with this safe with all my uMmMm.... important paper work. When I go home I bring this safe with me just in case some one wants to break in then I have important paper work TO SHOW THEM .... their letter of termination !!! One thing that would be nice is if on the inside of the safe there are padding allll around. Once opened and you look inside, only the North side of the bottom half is padded (because the upper half along with the lower half is padded to protect your important paper work. A few inches of double sided tape would fix this problem or just wrap your important paper work with a gun sock and you will be fine. I would recommend this safe for the price point. With this safe.... i feel safe. I have my own rating system: 1 - Buyer Beware, better off wiping your ass with your money than to buy this item. 2 - Item is acceptable, but I will always explain to people that I over paid for this item. 3 - Item meets my expectations, I am apprehensive and have low expectations for items I buy online. 4 - Item goes above and beyond my expectations.
