  • This is a durable tool of carbon steel and practical design that makes splitting easy and fast.
Color: Orange
Well-designed, made of carbon steel and best of all it works. I can split a lot of kindling in a very short time. Though splitting kindling looks easy in the movies, in point of fact often the ends of a log are not cut to 90 degrees or any where near that, so how do you get it to stand up very politley while you take a swing at it? Not a problem with this tool . I set one end of the log on the blade and give the other end a couple of licks and the blade itself holds the wood upright. I've see others that use a ring to keep the log straight up but this seems impracticable and even a mite dangerous to me. Besides, with this tool you can position the piece to split different widths. It's odd but other more complicated designs may appear to provide more features, but in my experience you need a sturdy tool, made of good steel and strong welds. My take of course. May not suit others. But, I'm eighty five and with this device I can split enough kindling in half an hour to last me for days. ... show more

  • Works great for Smoking woods
Color: BLACK
I've been smoking briskets, ribs, chicken and Thanksgiving turkey for 3 years now and figured it's time to improve my wood-splits to prevent wasting them. I still use the overpriced Cowboy and Kingston cooking woods available from the big-box stores because they are quite good. However they do need split down to prevent wasting the wood. I typically had been using an axe, but it's impossible to be accurate with the splits and the lack of stumps on-property makes chopping annoying to do. I did some research and decided this model was all I needed. I carefully reduced 3 bags of cooking wood, which are normal sized split logs and smaller diameter logs, down to what you see in the picture in about 20-25 minutes with just a Jackson hand-held sledge (probably 5#) and enjoyed doing it as well. I'll also be using this wedge for making bigger wood splits for our new Solo stove. Thank you to Amazon for the quick delivery (warehouse is only 15 minutes away btw), and I can recommend this wedge for wood splitting assists. ... show more

  • Works well, best when wood split with grain
Color: Orange
Easy to use, I sharpened the blade and it did break the wood up better. This isn’t good to split damp or wood that isn’t dried. I use a 5lbs small sledgehammer and it works great. Most of the wood I spit is presplit and I just break it down to kindling. Does better than a log on a stump with my axe that’s for sure. It’s not expensive and easy to use. It works. Works with dry wood. Damp or Wet wood this product is not ideal. After using this product, I would only use if on soft wood. I had a very hard time with Oak or Maple. ... show more

  • Simple, Efficient
Color: Orange
For decades I have scoured my backyard for sticks to use as kindling, breaking them over my knee and storing them in disorganized piles that are less than aesthetically pleasing. I started looking at the kindling crackers that have a ring and a blade that cost between $60 and $150. These models are made of brittle cast iron and a number of reviews indicate that they break rather easily. It was during my search that I came across the Hi-Flame kindling cracker. Solid steel, HEAVY, with juxtaposed, angled ribs on either side. I screwed mine to a stump and proceeded to cut a handsome pile of kindling using a 3 lb. hammer I bought at HD ($18). The hammer easily splits off pieces of kindling and I don't feel the need for a ring to hold the wood in place. If anything, a misdirected blow will probably break a ring off rather easily. I keep my Hi-Flame covered with a small bucket to keep the elements off of it. No more searching for sticks and I almost enjoyed "cracking kindling", putting the output in a nice pile and then twining it off like the pros do. Simple design, lower price, indestructible and efficient, recommended ! ... show more

  • Still Trying to Learn How
Color: BLACK
I certainly like the sturdiness of the construction, the weight of it, the welding. The concept is good. Lots of strikes, though, per split. I tried this out on some seasoned logs I had, wanting to see if I could split them down further for kindling. Using a 4# mallet, I had a lot of trouble getting through even a few pieces. Mainly, I plan to use this item for splitting my kindling from scrap construction lumber. I can use a lighter hammer, and the results are pretty good. Still, sometimes I need to strike the wood several times per pieces. Also, when hitting the wood, sometimes the hammer will tweak the upward-facing blade. This nicks the blade and requires filing. I mounted the item on solid wood blocks so I can stand upright when using it. ... show more

  • According To My Wife, This Is Great
Color: Orange
She's the kindling maker in our household and she gives this device two thumbs up. No more splitting maul, no more hatchet to sharpen. This thing is used with a small, hand held sledge hammer. She filled all of the kindling boxes very quickly. No splinters, no injuries. Oh, me? What do I do? I cheer her on and I use the pneumatic splitter on the big stuff. Teamwork. ... show more

  • Impressed by sturdiness
Color: Orange
Received splitter promptly. I am using it to split sections of wooden pallets for kindling. Essentially what I do is cut the middle sections of the pallets pieces parallel to the spines. This effectively leaves the nails in the wood and easy to dispose of. I use this device to split the pallet sections. Works well for the task. I did add a 2x10 piece of wood to increase the base size. Holes in the base are 1/4 inch in diameter. ... show more
