Description

Chris Mansfield fancies himself a fuck-up. Through the ten songs that make up the self-titled full-length from Fences, the 27-year-old musician's band, the singer and songwriter sings, in his resigned baritone how he just can't seem to get it right - love, life, family - again and again. That might be right, but if Mansfield's growing international fanbase, which includes the album's producer Sara Quin, of Tegan and Sara, shows anything, it's that Mansfield can do no wrong with his songs.

  • So good
Anyone can write a sad song, but it takes a real artist to write music that can show you their pain as though it was your own. These guys accomplish that beautifully. The heavy lyrics juxtaposed against the (often) light music is analogous to someone saying they're "good" -when asked in passing- even though they're dying inside. The array of emotions subtly explored in this album provides a degree of depth that is not often found in music that is also easy to listen to. I will be anxiously awaiting their next release. ... show more

  • Can't put my finger on it...
This album is absolutely great, and I listen to it ALL the time. Acoustic guitar is not normally my favorite, but the melodies of the songs just make you feel relaxed and peaceful. It reminds me of laying out on a hammock on a breezy fall day. I cannot wait to see what Fences comes out with in the future. ... show more

  • Live performance
Saw this band live, though the band wasn't with him. It was just him and his guitar and he sang about 5 or 6 songs. I should have picked up his album right there but i had no cash. But the guys got a great voice and some awesome songs, i had to get it.

  • OK
I thought it would be a better album based off of their main hit, but I don't enjoy many of their other songs.

  • Feel good sad songs
I saw this band for the first time last month when they opened up for Against Me! and their music stayed with me afterwords. They write melancholic self deprecating odes disguised as indie pop songs, and kind of remind me of The Appleseed Cast. My favorite tunes are The Same Tattoos, Girls with Accents, and Boys Around Here. ... show more

This is an album you must listen through beginning to end. There isn't a single throw-away song. This is a very complete and solid album. Pleas give it a listen and spread the word.
