  • Good product
This drive is very convenient, works well as a drive, and can connect to external devices,s and also is a card reader. Good value for the price.

  • Works as described on Windows PCs
This blu-ray player works as described on Windows PCs, but note that it does not work on a Mac (the description does say this though). I like the fact that the cable can be stowed out of the way, but the problem with this design is that it cannot lay flat due to the cable getting in the way. This is the reason I do not give this five stars. If they're able to fix that design flaw, this will be a serviceable Blu-ray drive. ... show more

  • A full funtion Blu ray player and recorder that works!
I have a mixed history with Blu-ray drives for the computer. Maybe it's a driver issue, but I have found that some of the off-brand ones are not recognized by the pc or don't do what they are supposed to do. I am very happy to say that this one does! It's important to recognize that the drive does not come with software to play or burn discs...the computer will either have a driver or a driver will be needed and downloaded (in this case, my computer did that automatically). PLAYING To test the player function, I downloaded VideoByte Blu-ray player in promo mode. It recognized a commercial movie and played it without any in-movie hesitations. BURNING To test the burning function, I downloaded AnyBurn. I selected video files (unprotected) and burned them as data to a Blu_ray recordable disc. The blank disc and its capacity was recognized automatically. Burning was easy peasy. The file was accessible via file explorer and opened in media player. It played without any stalling or bumps in the video. Success. To test the DVD burning capabilities, I repeated the same with a blank DVD-R disc. Again, easy peasy and a successful data burn. Burning video as a standard movie disc requires appropriate file preparation and codecs for encoding the movie to the right format prior to the burning, and selecting the correct burning mode. For some, depending on the software used, that can require different software applications for the prep. That's more a function of the software than the hardware, so I didn't test that ...yet. What I have is a good piece of hardware. The only negative is that the cord to connect the computer to the drive is a short-length built-in cable. That was trouble trying to use with my desktop machine, which I would have preferred to use for the testing. It works okay on a laptop where the drive is set closely to the left of the laptop. I am very pleased with the drive and know it will be an important part of my computer set-up going forward. ... show more

  • Great Infrequent Device
Gone are the days when an optical drive was absolutely necessary for all computers. Laptops got rid of them for the extra space to fit in a bigger battery or other components, desktops got rid of the 5.25in bay all together. But it's still good to have some way of reading optical discs and this is a good product to do so. Installation and setup was a breeze, with no drivers needed to use the device on Win11. I had no problems reading from and burning DVDs and Blu-Rays, though I did notice that the cable was a bit short. Not a problem for laptops but an annoyance for desktops. Otherwise it was silent enough for watching the occasional movie. • This External Blu-ray Drive reads and writes to CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, and plays your movies, too!
AMAZON VINE REVIEW of the WBACON EXTERNAL BLU-RAY DRIVE When I saw this EXTERNAL BLU-RAY drive appear at AMAZON I ordered it immediately. The last SEVEN PC’s and laptops we have built have not had cases that accepted external drive additions and, in fact case manufacturers have been recommending that users NOT get these drives installed due to cabling and heat considerations. OK, I understand all of that, but I have a library of Blu-Ray movies and Flight Sims and only two standalone Blu-Ray players already attached to televisions. So, any laptop or PC based CD, DVD, or Blu-Ray discs will HAVE to be played, burned, or copied on an EXTERNAL USB device. When I started looking for an ALL-IN-ONE external READ - WRITE - PLAY device the field narrowed quickly. I want ONE external drive to use CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD R, DVD R/RW, and to read and playback BLU-RAY discs. Oh, I also have some 3D Blu-Ray Discs, so we will include them, too. Too much to ask? Fortunately, no. This WBACON EXTERNAL BLU-RAY DRIVE happily does EVERYTHING I want it to do! Reading the included “manual” provides SPECIFIC answers to my questions. It is small, five pages, but it is READABLE and written in a typeface and size that do NOT require a magnifying glass. The external drive works with Intel or AMD CPUs 1.6 GHz or faster on Windows PCs and Power PC or Intel M chips on MACs. The extra CPU power is required for the Blue Laser to read much deeper “PITS” in Blu-Ray discs. The older red lasers from our CD days are gone. Blu-Ray actually got its name from that new BLUE LASER RAY that reads the deeper grooves burned into a Blu-Ray disc. It is fascinating stuff. The deeper grooves mean MORE DATA, BETTER COMPRESSION, FASTER READ (and WRITE) TIMES, and LESS CHANCE for SKIPS or ERRORS. The device itself is a black plastic shell with an “X” embossed on the top. I cannot see any purpose for it other than “decoration,” but it seems odd on a Blu-Ray player. The cable included with the drive is a dual USB-A and USB-C configuration, which is an excellent addition to the drive. The downside is that the cable is ATTACHED to the drive and is WAY TOO SHORT to be useful with a desktop machine. Works great with a laptop, but I would prefer to do my disc prep on the fastest machines in the house, which are desktops. I read from and wrote to CDs, DVDs, BLU-RAYs (the 25 GB and 50 GB Double-Layer Disc). EVERYTHING worked as expected, but the 50 GB Double-Layer discs are TOO SLOW to be useful. The single layer 25 GB Blu-Ray discs burned successfully at 16x speed. The DL disc advertised 6x but was running at 2X or less. Do not bother with DL until they are at least 10X. One important note, the external drive does NOT include ANY software for burning discs. Both Windows and MAC will usually automatically load drivers and CODECS when you plug in the USB drive. If they do not, there are many free products readily available online to facilitate burning music, data, and photos to disc. Final thoughts about this very nice WBACON EXTERNAL BLU-RAY DRIVE. At $38.99 (AMAZON MAY 2024) this disc is at the lower end of the spread spectrum for price but offers a full complement of capabilities in its range of disc types and capacities. It is plastic, but sturdy enough to sit happily on a desk doing the job for which it was designed. I do NOT think it will travel well, since the already TOO SHORT cord must be curled into its niche on the bottom of the drive. Although a permanently attached cord is always there when you need it, all that curling and pressing into channels can NOT be conducive to a long life for the cord. And if the cord dies the machine is a paperweight unless you are REALLY good with a soldering iron. A detachable LONGER cord would have been preferable for many reasons, but usability with desktops comes immediately to mind. With all factors considered, I LIKE this drive a lot. It manages its assigned duties well and worked flawlessly with every disc type…even the BLU-RAY DL discs, but at a maddeningly slow speed. I am removing ONE STAR for the too short, attached cord but it did work well with seven different computers here including MACs. I am not docking any stars for the lack of software or CODECS since they are a simple search and download away. So, this AMAZON VINE Review of the WBACON EXTERNAL BLU-RAY DRIVE is FOUR STARS! Four Stars! for multiple disc types, faster speed, better compression, and fewer errors from the BLUE LASER. Technology marches on… Thanks, AMAZON! Mark in North Carolina ... show more

  • Painfully short cable, great otherwise
Very portable. It's obviously intended to work with a laptop given that the cable is so short. This hurt me because I needed one for my desktop, but fortunately I had a USB extension. If you are traveling with it, the cable tucks nicely into a channel on the bottom. Reads my Blurays and DVDs just fine. Does not work with 4K discs, but also doesn't claim to. The tray can be a little finicky when trying to close it if you don't push in from the sweet spot just to the right of the button. ... show more
