  • Great lightweight machine for the price
Style: Sparrow 30
I've had this little machine since September 2018 and I just love her. For the price you will not find another machine with these features: plethora of decorative stitches, needle up/down, start/stop button sewing, extension table, feed dog up/down, automatic needle threader etc etc. I did have a bit of trouble with the bobbin housing coming loose within the first month but this was no trouble to open up the needle plate, reseat the bobbin and then tighten the screw. I've made countless quilts (including free motion), garments, and other projects on this machine. Beautiful stitches and easy to read manual. I am knocking off a star because in over 3 years I've never managed to get the automatic cutter to work properly. It always cuts the threads too short which necessitates rethreading the machine and usually pulling the bobbin thread through again. No matter, this is not a feature I cared much about anyway. I would highly recommend this machine for a beginner who wants to try some more advanced features like needle up/down without the advanced price tag or for a travel/retreat machine. ... show more

  • 50+ years of sewing experiece and a rate this machine as Top Notch! 10 STARS!!
Style: Sparrow 30
I had to wait 2.5 months for the delivery of my machine. I was a nervous wreck! I've been a sewing addict for over 50 yrs. My front room in my apt doesn't have sofas, TV etc, it's my sewing room! Well, I wore out my beloved machine and was left with my mom's Featherweight and a 3 spool sergerADD TO LIST. I looked at an attachment to make button holes with the FW and for the cost it had me looking at the Singer heavy wt machine. I do tax the motor on the FW. That started the journey to the Sparrow 30. First day, I hated it. It's my 1st computerized machine and that took a bit to get used to. I decided to keep the macine and at least give it a couple days after waiting so long for it to arrive. By the 2nd day I was starting to like it and by the 3rd day I was starting to fall in love with it. First off, I was worried about a 'pink' machine in my front room. But-I like it. I think of it as a 'blush' rather than pink. To me it's a soft, soothing color. It's easy and quick to thread, easy to wind the bobbin and easy to load the bobbin. I like the blade that you can use to trim the bobbin thread. It took me a bit to use the needle threader. Follow the manual EXACTLY. I love it now and Ilove the thread the button that cuts the thread when you are done sewing. Fundamental to everything about the machine is the fact that the machine produces a nice looking stitch! From the basic stitch to all the stitches- they are very nice stitches. The motor seems strong enough so far its stronger than the FW. Truthfully, the only objection I have may be an issue due to it being computerized. I am used to controlling the speed of the stitch by pressing down on the petal and backing off and grabbing the wheel to get it to stop exactly where I want it to stop. I'm having to get used to adjusting the petal speed with the slide conveniently located on the front of the machine. The petal does allow some control but if you back off past a certain point the machine completely stops and you have to completely back your foot off and start again to get it to go. Also the when you press the stitch cutter it wants to take a stitch abd then cut but I'm done-I don't want it to take a stitch! So I'm trying to get used to stopping a stitch short and then press the cutter. All in all I think this is a very lovely machine and definately a super buy for the price. I had a top of the line machine that I sewed on daily for 30 years! I think the little adjusting I'm having to do is really quite minute and to be expected! I very confidently give this macine a top rating! ... show more

  • Don't buy it.
Style: Sparrow 30
Update... I had multiple problems with this machine. After contacting the company yet again I was of offered an exchange. I took the exchange. I think the first machine was a lemon. New one was had no real issues as far as sewing so I'm adding more stars back. But if I was going to recommend a machine this would not be the one. I like the color and it sews ok. But for the price I expect more. The newer sparrow 30 is also green and they have renamed this one and lowered the price. That makes me think it has had issues. You can buy a much better machine for the price. I had issues right out of the box. Got a helpful reply and solved the tension issues. But they also stated it was a known problem. It worked great for a little while. But now the bobbin holder works it's way out of the machine. I wanted to love this machine because it's pink. But I'm still mad I paid the price for such a bad machine. I've had many machines over the years and this ranks the lowest. My $75 backup machine can out sew this one. Disappointed. ... show more

  • I Love This Machine!
Style: Sparrow 30
Purchased for a light weight machine that can travel to class. I am fussy, even about a classroom machine. Must have needle up/down, scissor thread cut function, speed control, and an extension table. To get these features one must always buy up (sort of like having to buy up in a car model to get the features wanted), and the price goes up, along with lots of stitch features not wanted. This is an upscale model for a downscale price. It has the features I require. It sews beautifully, even for a light weight machine, and sounds like a much more expensive machine. True, it has many stitches that I will never use, but that is OK. It was fun to unpack the machine when the box arrived -- that cute pink machine came to light and looked so friendly -- no intimidation here! The manual for the machine is the best written sewing machine manual I've ever used (and I've been through a number of machines), written in plain, concise English and easy to follow along. Take your time reading the manual while sitting in front of the machine and memorize the basic functions. You'll make friends with the machine very quickly. The Brewer Company that sells this machine is owned by Bernina. There is a 1 year warranty on electrical, and 10 year warranty on parts. They say normal cleaning, etc. can be done at any service center, but major repairs will probably have to be done by Brewer. All of the lubrication areas are sealed, so you don't have to fuss with oil -- yea! ... show more
