With the Ecotank line up of printers (I have the ET-8550) Epson has abandoned the “razor blade” model and makes its profit upfront on the printer. Since an ink charge typically lasts a year or longer (I sometimes have to buy an extra “Photo Gray” bottle) ink cost is no longer an issue: nor would I take a chance with third party ink. I was a former photography teacher for 35 years and between digitized film images and digital photos I have over 70,000 images in my photo library, so I print a lot! I also print on a wide range of media, including (recently) paper cut from large commercial rolls of dry lab photo paper or coated canvas that I’ve found at a local retail surplus re-seller at incredibly low prices. This includes HP, Fuji, Pakor and Epson products (Epson Exhibition Canvas) that are not recommended for this printer or ink but work fine. The rear feeder on the printer also allows the use of very thick media (the exhibition canvas is 420 g/m2 or gsm (grams per square meter, a higher number is thicker, plain paper is around 20 g/m2). Of course these media products perform best with their recommended inks and printers, but the point is they also work just fine on my printer with this ink. ... show more

Have been using the Epson ET-8500 printer with the Epson inks for about 4 months. I would guess that my printing use is about average. I have not seen the levels drop at all. I am super impressed. The color print quality is really sharp and vibrant using Epson glossy and matted papers. Totally dry out of the printer. Other glossy photo papers do not dry and smear badly. If you sue the Epson inks along with the Epson papers, you will get super results. I do. I have had Canon printers for over 15 years, which were really good. But the Epson ET-8500 still blows my socks off. Printing now for over 40 years. ... show more

I haven't needed to put new ink in my printer since the first day I got it (about a year ago). I use it for homeschooling so I print a lot. I still have half a "tank" of ink. I just got this for backup.

The EcoTank printer is great value. I just printed 1,000+ pages of presentation for work, and it used less than a quarter of the tank for each color (each bottle contains more than a full tank of ink). The colors are great. My only complaint is that this product only comes with five of the six bottles needed to refill the machine. WTH!? Now I need to make another purchase for the Black ink. ... show more
