There is some assembly required. The tension arm has to be attached to the main body of the machine but a screwdriver and two screws, an extra in case you lose one, are provided. I always like to have the correct tools provided so I don't have to go searching around. If you can't leave this out all the time it's easily disassembled for storage. The instructions were helpful and well written. It uses electricity via a cord to work so you can't use this when you don't have power or are at a place without power. It has variable speeds so you can wind the yarn slowly or quickly depending on the size of the yarn. If it gets tangled up it sounds an alarm to let you know your yarn needs attention before it gets too messy. A center-pull ball of yarn is easily created. I tried this with both sock yarn and aran-weight wool and it worked well with both. I enjoy winding by hand but this is also enjoyable to watch. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. To show my dedication to testing this winder I had to first tame a massive entanglement of about 90 yards of yarn from a skein gone wild, but it was worth it! My daughter the crochet aficionado has wanted one of these for a while then when I saw it available I ordered it without a second thought. The unit itself feel is lightweight, almost all plastic, but more than sufficient enough to handle yarn. Some assembly is required using the included cross-head screwdriver, but was easily accomplished by an unsupervised 12 year old. Once assembled, it's ready to go. It does come with a table clamp that I recommend using to keep the spindle under control when spinning, but isn't required at lower speeds. Speed (RPM) is adjustable with the small knob at the front of the unit. From here, all you need to do is feed the yarn through the first guide and into the tensioner then into the last guide and attach to the spindle. I had actually stepped away during the setup and found that Grandma and my daughter had already wound up quite a bit of yarn then gave up when it came to the knotted mess. They still tried to wind it while untangling at the same time, but the winder would beep when it detected too much tension on the feed. That's where I came in and spent the next 40 or so minutes patiently untangling the mess and ran the remaining yarn to achieve this masterfully wound ball of yarn. I know very little about yarn and have very little experiencing trying to knit or crochet, but as a gadget Dad this is a cool gadget to have or to gift to someone who knits or crochets. ... show more
