  • this is a great buy
Size: 4S
Yes, the packaging was minimal, and amazing it came undamaged. However, this is probably the best deal you can find on a bass right now, especially if you can get it on Black Friday sale or Prime Day or something. I bought it together with a cheaper Glarry bass and a Squire Classic Vibe 70's (that cost twice as much) to compare them all. The Glarry offers no competition. The Bullfighter is solid, and dare I say beautiful. The Glarry felt like a cheap toy next to it, and the neck dive on the Glarry was absurd. The Bullfighter is every bit as substantial as the Squire, has better fit and finish, offers active pickups, neck through body, and I thought it sounded better too. Much more meaty and with greater sonic variation from the controls. Playing through a Fender Rumble 100W, not my favorite, but it's what I have. The setup was basically good-enough-for-me out of the box. (Shipped with stings detuned, of course.) The neck is very substantial, thicker than the Squire, and to me it feels good, although I'm used to thinner Ibanez necks. The fretboard inlays are unique, and quite nice I think. The fretboard feels nice to play on. The pickups are very powerful, very quiet humbuckers, and the output seems very bass-heavy with pots at neutral, but you can adjust it of course. I have noticed some clipping when I really dig into the strings, so I'm guessing the electronics may be cheap or the pickups too close to strings, but doesn't really bother me. I've seen complains about sharp fret edges, but they are perfect on the example I received. (In fact, the Squire frets jabbed my finger far more often than those on the Bullfighter.) The strings seem to have good character, not dead, although nowhere near as bright as the strings on the Squire. Can't comment on the tuners, except that they work OK, but look cheap. The pots look cheap but feel quite solid, nice resistance, good on-center feedback. The battery compartment has ample space, no messy wires, and works fine. The wood body is attractive, although barely finished at all. "Natural" is no joke. The body is not a single piece of wood, however, and on mine that's very apparent. They did not take great care in choosing pieces with similar grain, so it has a little Frankenstein look, but hey, it's unique. If I were to do it again, I would order more than one and then choose the one that looks the best, since it seems the variation can be extreme. The Bullfighter brand is produced by Changsha Bullfighter Musical Instrument in China, and their website is a comedy of automatic translations, but it seems like they know how to make a good bass. Longevity? Who knows. The accessories are nice but mostly worthless. The strap is probably usable, but it's a heavy instrument, so you'll probably want something better. The gig bag is more of a dust cover. The picks... well OK. I can always use a few more picks around the house, although these are not the kind I would use to pick a bass. (I like those giant Fender picks.) I did not try the cables or the tuner, but good to have extras I suppose. The assumption has to be that these are minimum quality, though, so don't rely on them! ... show more

  • Don’t buy unless you want to do a lot of work.
Size: 5S
Here’s the good I love the way the space looks. Here’s the bad: upon arrival the outer box looked good. But there was no protection other than gig bag inside the box. Basically the base was loose inside the box in its big bag. This is an extremely poor packing method. If I had to guess I would say that is how one of the controls was damaged. With the exception of some very small finish flaws the base looks really nice. The nut is cut way too high and will need some work to make the bass playable in the upper frets. The fret end are the worst I’ve ever seen on any instrument in my 45 years of playing. They’re so sharp he could actually cut your hand. The battery compartment was too small and would not hold my 9 V rechargeable battery. So I never actually got a chance to try the bass. I really like how it looks but it’s too much work. These problems are all fixable but I would not recommend it for someone who does not know how to do basic repairs. ... show more

  • A Project
Size: 5S
This is a great value if you're looking for PROJECT to work on. As it comes out of the box this bass is bad. Very bad. Every fret on the top side threatened to slash me open, the strings were bad, all the pickups were misaligned, the tuning machines are all sorts of lose and the audio jack was very loose as well. Thanks to many other reviewers here I kind of knew that going in, though, and at ~$150 on Prime Day I figured it would be a project. I bought a fret file in anticipation of getting this. You may also want to get a fret/string/pickup height guide as well. If you want something cheap to teach you how to properly set up a guitar, though, this thing plays AWESOME once it's all said and done. I put 2-3 hours of work and care into it and it feels like a much more expensive guitar than what I paid for it. A true through neck, 5 string bass without an absolutely huge radius and some beautiful wood. Awesome if you know what you're getting into. ... show more

  • Great Neck Thru Bass especially @ the price.
Size: 4S
I Love this Bass, and the fact that it is a Real Neck Thru body. This is my second unit as the first came damaged (poor packaging - only in a box with gigbag on guitar). My second unit came packaged similar, But inside another box, which did protect this one just fine. I really liked what I saw with the first Bass, besides the damage (top of guitar was dented & 1 tuner was ruined), so when I saw it was discounted I ordered another 1. My Bass is in great shape, frets are smooth, action is adjusted nice, fret markers look Great, No buzz from frets, Wood looks Great. This is one Loud Bass as the pickups are active (needs a 9 volt battery) Love It. I upgraded my rating to 5 Stars because, the value is unbeatable, craftsmanship is nearly Outstanding, the neck shape and feel is just right for me. I Love this Bass so much I just had to edit my review. ... show more

  • You will absolutely need work done on this bass.
Size: 5S
The Bad - Headstock tuner holes are much larger than the actual tuners. Pickup Routes are too small to allow room to adjust the pickup height. Frets have sharp ends and are slightly tarnished. Poorly cut, plastic nut. The bridge is too tall - with saddles lowered fully, action is still a bit high. The headstock logo looks pretty tacky. The Good - It's super cheap for a neck through! The cavities are painted neatly with shielding paint (better than the sloppy work on my Ibanez). Copper shielded pickup backs (with ground wire soldered on). Active, 3-way preamp (bass, middle, treble), with volume and pickup balance knobs. Overall, if you like to work on guitars (like me), it's a great project. I shimmed the tuner holes, installed a bone nut, rolled the fingerboard edges, enlarged the pickup routes, did a full fret job, and I'm thinking about installing a lower profile bridge and sanding the headstock logo off. If you don't do work on guitars, it's probably not worth it. You would have to spend hundreds of dollars to have a tech do the necessary work to make the bass easily playable. You can play this bass right out of the box, but the fret ends and high action make for a pretty poor playing experience. Spend a little more on a bass with better QC. ... show more
