  • Powerful chipper, one pull start - First experience exceeded expectations!
Used chipper one time so far; ran it for about an hour. Full disclosure: I’m not mechanical so I had someone who handy is assemble it. Took him 30-45 minutes and his comment was that instructions were lousy but that it wasn’t hard (for him) to figure out. I added a little over 1/2 QT oil (had to use a funnel) and then it fired up with first pull. Was able to turn choke off almost immediately. I followed the start up operating instructions and ran at 1/2 throttle for 15 minutes and then full throttle for 5 minutes BEFORE running anything through the machine. It has plenty of power, enough to respect the safety instructions. Once it grabs a tree limb, it goes through forcefully and quickly so use care with clothing or jewelry that could get caught on a branch. I wore the same ear protection I use on my riding mower. I fed from the side, as instructed, and occasionally noticed small chips come back out of the feed slide. Nothing dangerous but eye protection is definitely a good idea. I didn’t test the size of the limbs but it easily handled up to 2” diameter. Anything larger we save and use for our fire pit anyway so there was no reason try bigger. It is only a chipper (no leaf shredder). It does great with branches that have leaves on them but it can be difficult to get smaller, lighter items to feed and I was being extra careful not to plug it up. It loves long, straight branches and makes quick work of them. Now that I have run it, I’ll be much more efficient going forward as I will know how to better prepare the branches for chipping. In hindsight, I wish I had taken before and after pictures. The pile I shredded filled our large, full size pickup bed. Previously, I had been breaking the limbs down and putting them in 39 gallon Hefty bags. I’m guessing the pile I chipped today would have filled about 10 of those bags doing it without the chipper. The pile of mulch that remained when I finished chipping would have filled one bag; however, we used the mulch to cover bare ground under our trees. After only one use, I cannot speak speak to durability but it appears to be well made and has lots of power. It has the feel of a machine that will last for a while with proper care. Definitely recommended! ... show more

  • OUTSTANDING Machine
I held off writing a review when first receiving this machine. Now, just starting my second season with the EFCUT, I can assure everyone that this is indeed a great purchase. During the first year of owning this product, it was put through the paces. Having fourteen trees on my property, it was used heavily during the first year. This unit shredded limbs up to three inches into confetti without any problem. When putting this unit up for the winter, I drained all of the gas from the tank. Getting ready for the second season, all I did was fill the tank and with one pull, the EFCUT started without a problem. This thing cuts through limbs like a hot knife through butter. With a pile of limbs that was nine feet in length, almost five feet wide, and almost five feet high, I was able to put all of what remained in a 30-gallon trash bag after shredding it in the EFCUT. I was absolutely amazed! After all of the heavy use, I have yet to sharpen or replace the blades. I have only used non-ethanol gas with a fuel stabilizer so this might be a major factor why this unit starts as easy as it does. Also, I change the oil after every 15 to 20 hours of use. Changing the oil is a very easy process since the engine has a drain plug. The recommendation in the owners manual is to use 15W-40 synthetic oil and allow a break in period of at least 45 minutes at low speeds before first use and change the oil after break in. After that it can be run at full speed. After my EFCUT went through the break in period, I let it run at low speed for about 10 minutes before working it hard at full speed. Overall, for me this unit is a great value and VERY dependable. Now, every year I don't have to haul a truck load of limbs to the dump because I'm able to condense all of the limbs into one trash bag. When I say that the limbs are reduced to confetti, limbs that are two to three inches are reduced to dime to nickel size. The durability and quality of this machine far exceeds my expectations. Another great feature, removing two bolts from the bottom of the chute allows this unit easy storage due to the reduced size. Overall, I would highly recommend this machine to anyone wanting reliability, durability, and ease of use. ... show more

  • Only used it once but it works great
I picked this model because I saw on one of EFCUT's product comparison pages that this model works well with green branches. I had read that other shredders can get jammed up with green twigs. A lot of what I cut are saplings and I got this shredder when I realized I was spending three times as much time and effort cutting up the branches (so they could be put in a smaller pile) than the time I spent actually cutting the trees down. This has a rotary drum that holds the blades rather than a disk like most chippers. It's a very simple design; just a motor with a rotating drum attached to the shaft, and an input and output chute going to and from the drum. I tried it one time on some saplings I cut down and it worked great. No jamming and it handled fairly large pieces, although I did need to feed the larger pieces slowly, Perfect for my needs - I just want to chip branches and have no need for mulching leaves. I look forward to using it again. One minor complaint. All of the controls are clearly labeled EXCEPT the fuel valve. I initially filled it with gas and oil, then turned the fuel valve and started it. It ran great for a minute or so then stopped and wouldn't restart. I finally realized I had the fuel valve turned off - it had been running on gas in the carburetor. One additional sticker for the fuel valve could have saved me a lot of aggravation. In fairness, the manual does say the valve switch should be vertical, but who reads the manual? It's a 90-degree valve so it's not as intuitive as an inline valve where you align the handle with the flow. ... show more
