  • It does what I bought it for!
I have a stand-alone AC unit that only runs in AC mode maybe two months a year, but I wanted to run the fan 5 minutes an hour without having to manually go to the thermostat and switching it from AUTO to ON and back....this one allows me to set a run duration per hour and then ensures the air in the house is being cycled and run thru the filter the other 10 months of the year. Awesome. Note I did not have the "C" (Cyan?) wire, so I had to call out an AC dude to come wire it up. Curiously, he did not need/use the power extender kit that came with the device, as he "found" a black (hot?) wire from the AC control to power the thermostat. Not that that saved me any money, one way or the other I needed help getting it installed. Once installed, setup was a breeze, although it did take an attempt or two before it connected to my wifi and to the cloud servers. But once connected, no issues since. ... show more

  • Easy way to get into a smarter house
Wanted to start making my home a little bit smarter, so I did some research and decided this was going to be the product for me. The app capability as well as being able to interface with Echo was great, as well the lite version works better for my open concept house (I don't need the sensors). I have 3 thermostats in my house, but decided to start with one. So far so good after being installed. I am not a handyman by any means but this is pretty straight forward. The app made installation easy, and there was only one thing unclear (this is going to get to why I put 4 starts instead of 5). I called their line and was on hold for 45 minutes. I had read reviews that customer services was great and could talk to someone quickly, my experience was the complete opposite. Even customer service as horrible as Comcast doesn't take 45 minutes to get someone on the phone. All that being said, once I finally did get to talk to someone, they were great, answered my question quickly. They're still trying to learn this product so the only advice I would have for Ecobee is to train your people a little bit more. Otherwise I really think I am going to like this product. If you are on the edge between Nest and Ecobee, for the price point go with Ecobee, it has a touch screen and make scheduling and saving energy costs extremely easy. Long story short, great product, easy to use app, long wait times if you want to speak to a person ... show more

  • Had bedrooms that used to be a nightmare to keep heated / cooled - this is helping a lot!
So,far great. I have two zones. The one zone is for all the bedrooms. This is bad because the thermostat is in the back bedroom but the front bedrooms have wild temperature differences. With the Ecobee, I can put sensors in all the rooms and it does its best to keep all the rooms in the desired range - but only if it detects people in those rooms. Since one room is an office and one is guest room, this is perfect. They will still be different, but not as wildly different. Also, when I'm home alone the office is staying a much better temperature, and at the end of day the master bedroom is better - all without having to micromanage the thermostat. It is important to note that they are still only a single zone, so the HVAC is either on or off, but it detects what room people are in and tries to keep all those rooms inside the desired range. So if the master bedroom with the thermostats is fine, but the office is hot, if someone is in the office and not in the master, it will turn on the air. The master may be overly cool - but who cares, nobody is in there. I got an Ecobee lite for the other zone. Not because I needed it for the sensors, but because I was so happy with the first zone. For this zone, I just like that I can control it with my phone and it detects if we aren't home and saves us energy - so also great. I was nervous about the install. However, the phone app walks you through it step by step it was EASY!! Amazon echo setup easy. More of a novelty, but fine. Also hooked up easily to Smart Things hub - haven't yet explore what I can do with that yet. Overall, I'm thrilled. ... show more

  • Easy install, Great App, Minimal Alexa Support
Installation: This was not my first thermostat installation but it was the first requiring a common wire and having to use the included PEK (I have a 4 wire install). I was nervous having to make adjustments to wires on the heating unit’s circuit board to install the PEK but it could not have been easier. Simply unscrew the screws a little (just enough to pull out the wires) that hold in the 4 wires going to the thermostat and remove them, careful not to disconnect wires to the AC in the process. Put in the 5 wires from the PEK and tighten them. Insert the 4 wires to the thermostat into the correct slots on the PEK and that’s it. The magnet sticks to the inside of the heating unit and just put the panel back on. Back at the thermostats location you just plug those 4 wires into the back plate, mount it, put on the unit and that’s it, turn the power back on it and it booted up. Not including fixing up the wall a little where the previous thermostat was it took about 20 minutes. It includes a wall plate to cover damaged areas of the wall around the unit but putting a piece of cheap plastic around the nice touch screen display seemed to defeat the purpose of having a nice looking thermostat like this. I would highly recommend taking the time to patch holes and paint instead of using the wall plate. Setup: Setting up and registering was easy as well. Connect to your wifi and create an account with ecobee if you don’t have one. Enter your location and you can get local weather as well. You can adjust their premade schedule or make your own. There are also comfort settings for being Home, being Away, or Sleeping for quick preset changes. You can also set a special vacation schedule. I found it easier to use the app than the touch screen when setting it up. App: the app is basically the exact same as using the touch screen on the unit. You can completely adjust all your settings and schedules from here. It can be done on your local wifi or away from home using mobile data. Once you make an adjustment on the app you’ll see the changes made on the units screen a few seconds later. Alexa: Alexa was the only disappointment here. You download and enable the skill and find the device with the Alexa app, that part is easy, but the lack of features is disappointing. The entire reason we got a wifi/alexa thermostat is so that we could change the temperature when in bed without having to get up and go downstairs and to even avoid fumbling around with a smart phone in the dead of night using an app. While changing the temperature works doing this, it’s about all you can do and leaves a lot to be desired. “Alexa set thermostat temperature to 68 degrees” and Alexa will set (and hold) the thermostat to 68. However you cannot change modes from heat to cool or auto. You cannot ask Alexa what the thermostat is set to and cannot set a time to change the temperature on the fly. You cannot create an Alexa group to combine commands (like you can with WeMo to turn multiple lights on and off at once). Alexa can: Set and hold a specific temperature “Alexa, set thermostat to 70” Increase or decrease the temperature by a said amount “Alexa, turn thermostat up 2 degrees” Alexa cannot (as of Jan 2017): Tell you what the thermostat is currently set to Switch from cool mode to heat mode or auto mode Turn the entire unit on or off (some people still open windows) Turn on just the fan Switch to home, away, or sleep profiles Resume a schedule after setting the temperature with your voice due to Hold being enabled when using Alexa. The Ecobee Alexa command page says they plan to add more voice features but that was written February 2016 and as of Jan 2017 nothing new has been added or updated. Overall: Easier than expected to install. Great appearance nice clean look. Great app with all the features of the unit. Minimal Alexa support leaves a lot to be desired. ... show more
