  • Full of Promise but Ultimately Failed to Deliver
With a feature set rarely seen at a bargain price, this DigitNow! turntable begs for some attention: + Audio-Technica AT3600L cartridge, very nice and (if you must) easily upgradeable + S-shaped tonearm with universal headshell mount + tracking force & anti-skate adjustments + pitch adjustment with strobe indicator + both RCA & USB outputs + switchable preamplifier to provide either line-level or phono output I wanted very much to make this turntable work and, had it not been fully manual (auto-stop, at least?) I might have decided to live with its shortcomings. But, while all those nice features made the purchase decision easy, I found too many of them to be poorly executed. PROS: - The phono cartridge is by far the best thing about this entire setup. Search Audio-Technica AT3600L online and you'll see everyone agrees it's an outstanding value with surprising sound quality. Record players in this price range often come with a permanently-attached and sometimes ceramic cartridge. Compared to any of those, this AT moving-magnet cart will blow you away. - The universal headshell makes it easy to swap between cartridges if for instance, like me, your needs include digitizing old 78 RPM records. (Play them at 45, then Change Tempo +73.333% in Audacity.) But, plan to spend ~$110 for a headshell & cartridge combo with a proper 78 stylus like the AT-VM95SP/H ... OR, search for the Pfanstiehl 211-D3, a third-party 78-RPM stylus for the AT3600L cartridge! - The line-level USB output sounds very good. - The lockable tonearm rest provides for worry-free storage. - The strobe and pitch adjustment seem to function well ... if you're into that* PRO? or CON? - *The strobe, assuming it's accurate, suggests '0' on the pitch control scale is off quite a bit and the platter speed varies; during play, if I'm watching, I'm adjusting frequently ... and wondering if that's one reason few turntables in this price range have a strobe. (If it didn't exist, I'd have no reason to suspect a problem.) - Audacity is included on a CD—"Version: 1.1" from 2002?! (I didn't bother)—along with some decent instructions in the DigitNow! manual. CONS: - The tracking force counterweight design is clunky, imprecise and unstable. The DigitNow! manual calls for 1.5-2.5g but, given some online sources suggest 2.5-4.5g for the AT3600L, I aimed for 2.5g. However, after performing the usual balance-to-zero-and-dial-it-up adjustment—Warning: the manual says nothing about how to do this!—checking the results with a stylus force scale found the counterweight's 2.5g setting actually yielding 3.6g (Ugh!). Also, it seems the counterweight can slip on its track and go way out of spec. So, if you value your vinyl, you'll want to set the force with a scale and recheck regularly. (I was unable to check the anti-skate mechanism.) - The tonearm lift is stepped and poorly designed. With the arm lifted, positioning the needle above the beginning of the LP usually finds the arm sliding down the step, back toward the armrest. To use the lift to cue the start of an LP, you'll have to search for the very narrow sweet spot where the arm will stay in place until you're ready to drop it onto the vinyl. (If there's a way to adjust this, I couldn't find it.) - With the built-in preamp turned off (switched to PHONO), running the RCA outputs through my component preamp produced unacceptable hum. Since this turntable has no ground wire, I couldn't do anything about it. - As is often the case these days, the instruction manual is sometimes unclear or, regarding the LINE-PHONO preamp switch setting, completely wrong. CONCLUSION: If you're simply looking for the best sound available at a bargain price—and you're okay with its fully-manual operation—this turntable is definitely worth a look. But, if you need some higher-end features that function well, look elsewhere (and prepare to spend more). ... show more

  • Good value, works well
I bought a high-quality Cartridge to go on this at the same time I bought the turntable. The turntable is a good quality and with the hi-fi cartridge it sounds best quality. I gave the original cartridge to my son, he put it on his turntable, and it made his unit sound much better, so I would say the original cartridge is a better quality. It does keep rpm steady and is easy to adjust according to the weight of individual records. The only quirk I feel is the power switch is tucked in under the back panel. I do not plan on using data cable and the software ... show more

  • Can't Reach the Maker
Despite the card and info in the package, I can't reach the manufacturer, DigitNow. I have now received 3 of these turntables. They look like they have all the features I want. The first one came and was missing about 4 attachments; the second one is missing the belt for the turntable. There's a card with the package exalting the maker's customer service, but you can only chat and don't get the help you need. There is a customer service number included that doesn't work ! Amazon has sent a third one to help me get all the parts but I need a better description for installing the belt. Have been very disappointed with this purchase overall. ... show more

  • A versatile vinyl record player
The media could not be loaded. In my opinion, this vinyl record player picks up where turntables left off after CDs took over in the 1980s. At the time, most consumer turntables were fully automatic. People listening would put a record on the platter, push a button, and they were done. From there, the turntable picks up the tonearm, places it over the beginning of the record, gently puts it down, and voilà, music. At the end of the record, the turntable automatically lifts the tonearm, gently puts it back in its holder and then turns itself off. Convenient, yes, but fully automatic is more about not accidentally scratching your records. This DIGITNOW High Fidelity Belt Drive Turntable weighs in at a little over 12 pounds, and heavy is good in turntable land. It comes in silver and sets it up in 10/15 minutes. And with both line and phono outputs (RCA jacks), you can hardwire everything like it’s 1973, or download the MusicCast app and start streaming literally anything from anywhere. (Your favorite Internet radio stations, your digital collection, whatever.) But, the real magic happens when you put an album on the VINYL. We did exactly that with a pair of stereo MusicCast speakers hooked up, and the experience was everything one would hope for with a top-of-the-line turntable: incredibly warm with deep, round lows and crisp, clear highs. All in all, very human. This record player’s key feature is the magnet-powered “direct drive,” which is usually only found in professional-grade turntables or other, more expensive units. Unlike turntables with a “belt drive” (a motor powered by replaceable belts that wear down with use and may need to be swapped depending on the type of record you play), a direct drive will rarely, if ever, need service, who says it can handle records of all sizes without any fiddling under the hood. it has a built-in preamp, so the only other thing you need to use it is a powered speaker, and it features a USB output that allows you to connect it to your computer in case you want to archive your vinyl. Overall, this vinyl record player is well-made and nice. It is easy to use and versatile. ... show more
