  • Great Deal as a Zoneminder Server
I recently purchased a used, reconditioned Dell Optiplex 9020 Small Form Factor Desktop with Intel Core i7-4770 from Amazon. The reconditioning took place in a plant in Canada. I am very pleased with the performance of this computer and the ease of setup. I chose this system from Amazon after comparing it with other refurbishers because of Prime shipping. I had been running Zoneminder on a Raspberry Pi 4 to process the video from 4 cameras and store the footage on a 6 TB external Hard drive. That system struggled and I finally decided to upgrade. The newest Raspberry Pi seemed expensive, so I decided to look at used Intel boxes. I found this system on Amazon for less than the cost of a Pi and with a free keyboard and mouse. Seemed a great bargain. When the system arrived, it had Windows 10 Pro installed. I did not want to destroy that. I was able to shrink the partition on the 1 TB hard drive and install Debian as a dual boot operating system. The process was made easier by the fact that the drive came formatted using the GUID partition table (GPT). I installed Grub to manage the boot process, which was a breeze after I figured out that I needed to change the BIOS boot process from Legacy mode. I was able to connect the same external hard drive that I had used with the Pi to one of the USB 3 ports and it mounted without fuss under Debian. The system comes with both HDMI and Display Port video but sans cables. I had a spare Display Port on my monitor, so I bought a cable (one-day delivery) from Amazon, and I was up and running. After initial configuration I mostly log into the system with Putty, so I hardly use the monitor. But I did want sound capability. I purchased a cheap USB speaker, and it works great. My total investment was still less than the Pi and it runs circles around it. Rather than use the USB mouse that came with my purchase, I used the built-in Bluetooth to connect my Logitech MX master. Once again, no problems whatsoever, one less cable to mess with. I am using both the WiFi card, built-in and the 1GB ethernet port. The drivers for Debian installed by default for both. I didn’t have to hunt for anything, plug-and-play! I love the size of this thing. You can see it in my picture beside my full-size desktop system. The external Hard Drive (purchased separately) is sitting on top of it. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend this product to anyone looking for a reliable and affordable computer that is easy to install Debian Unix on. ... show more

  • I bought 3 at once. No issues at all.
Listen, it’s a computer. Stuff happens. I bought 3 of these, and one new dell as a server that cost more than the 3 of these combined. Guess which unit didn’t POST and I had to replace? The new dell. So far all 3 booted up and are running just fine. I opened one up and used the second hdd port to clone a hard drive, no issues at all. Windows 10 pro is licensed and fine. The only issue I had is the display port to HDMI adapter didn’t work. I bought these because all of my monitors have VGA and am using those. I wouldn’t use the adapter. Computers break, parts fail, etc. it’s the name of the game. I use mine with the Ethernet cable. The WiFi adapter is a dongle, 2,4g only and slow so just know if you want fast wifi buy a wifi card and install it or run a cable to the machine. For $230 it’s hard to beat. The ssd isn’t name brand but it works and speeds the machine up. I replaced one with a 1tb cloned WD blue to test the machine and it did run slower. The likelihood of a component breaking is random. I have a 10 computer network in my office that is on 24/7/365. This is joining those so we will see. These are old, but newer than most of my machines. They are old commercial machines, optiplex. I see from some bad reviews that it’s luck of the draw. Guess I got lucky 3x. ... show more

  • Small form desktop is plug and play
This is purportedly a 'new' machine. The disc drive, mounted perpendicularly, failed after three or four uses. Everything else is working well. There are eight USB ports and a dongle for HDMI. The system is quick, storage to primary disk is very fast, network communications are fast, at least compared to my old PC, which was also a Dell Optiplex system. I had one hang that was puzzling, but a reboot cured the problem, so overall performance is good for this system. And it's nice to have such a small device, improves the configuration of my work desk. ... show more

  • Amazon Refurb Products Are Not Worth It!!!
I bought this product last summer for a summer nonprofit gig. It worked perfectly for 45 days, then the season was over. I took the unit and locked it away safely for the year. This summer, when I reconnected it and booted up, I got a 'Your PC Needs Repair--Please Contact Seller or Manufacturer'. The unit did let me run diagnostics, which said nothing was wrong. I rebooted, and tried several things, with no success. I reported it to Amazon and the seller, who first said the warranty was up. But I pointed out that I had not used it for a full year, only 45 days. I requested that they just send me a new one, but the seller continues to try to get me to going through an OS restore; however, since I didn't receive any OS disks with the unit, I am supposed to follow a complicated set of instructions that I was sent that contained broken links, use another computer to create a thumb drive, etc. I am computer literate but I don't have the time required to go through all that. Amazon, Dell and the seller need to step up and just send me another unit. The units are supposed to be guaranteed, and the cost on their end vs. bad word of mouth. I also just bought a refrub monitor from Amazon and the speakers don't work, but that's another story.. ... show more

  • Great. Value in Small Footprint
Loads of USB ports front and back. Came with HDMI adapter and 1T SSD. Came with corded mouse and keyboard which I left in box in favor of cordless which I already had. For under $250 great buy. Delivery was two days after. Ordering. Again no complaints.

  • Worked great until
Bought this not expecting a lot but it’s a great cheap computer. Worked perfect for 2.5 months then started having hard drive faults. Got a replacement thru Amazon. I’ll see how that works out. I can’t hate it but I can’t love it either.
