  • A great low-cost alternative to "Big Box Store" 18" Dishwashers
Color: Stainless Steel Style: Dishwasher
Due to backorders galore and prices ranging from $650-1100 for most 18" dishwashers We looked at (Do NOT get Me started on why a smaller dishwasher costs far more than a standard-size as many have asked, the simple fact is that they are just not as popular and therefore have a much slower sales rate, hence the higher cost) I took the risk on this Danby and WOW - So far i am quite amazed. The Dishwasher arrived in a box that looked like it had been through WW3 (the entire bottom was falling out including the foam but luckily the packing strap was holding it all intact) and I was heartbroken - until I opened it up and the machine itself was dead-on 100% perfect. Installation was straightforward and all connections are standard (although you WILL need to purchase an Install Kit and Cord as with all dishwashers) - the leveling feet, although plastic, are easy to access and adjust and seem quite robust (not like the machine will be moved around once installed anyhow). A nice touch are soft rubber "wings" on the sides of the unit that will fill the extra gap if your opening is slightly over 17.75" - the entire install took under 20min and basic hand tools. If ANYTHING I would gripe about, it's the humidity Shield they provide for under the countertop, the adhesive isn't so great. I solved that with a quick spray of Super 77 adhesive - maybe not necessary but i decided to err on the side of caution as i wasn't thrilled w the adhesive already on the shield. THAT SAID, the first time i filled it up, I was actually impressed with the amount of dishes and pans i could fit in there. The silverware basket is convertible for odd-sized cutlery or kitchen tools, and all in all if I had one gripe it would be how close the support fingers in the drawers are, wider dishes and cookware can be a bit difficult to load efficiently (but it can be done and again, this little thing holds quite a bit). The soap dispenser is easy to access and clicks shut firmly. Performance is REALLY where this little thing shines. This is the quietest dishwasher i have ever owned throughout most of the cycle (although the relay clicks are a bit startling the first time You use it, mainly due to the unit itself being so quiet) and the dishes, silverware, glasses, etc all come out clean, dry, and spot-free time after time. It seems to use a bit more Jet-Dri than our old machine per load, but that's no deal-breaker - And it DOES take longer per cycle than our old machine (about 2hrs 30min for Deep, 2hrs 13min for Eco/Standard, and 1hr 45min for Fast) which also is of little consequence as there are only 2 of us so We really only need to run it every couple of days. Of note, this unit did 2X if not more as well with the racks from our Air Fryer as did our old machine, it blasted ALL the little stuff out of the screens which i found to be REALLY amazing. This is an initial review, and if anything changes i will of course update - but all in all i would definitely recommend this unit if You need an 18" Dishwasher. ... show more

  • Great option for DIY retrofit
Color: Black Style: Dishwasher
I purchased the Danby 18-inch dishwasher after a few months of planning. I bought an older home without a garbage disposal or dishwasher, so this was part of my DIY project. I chose an 18-inch dishwasher because it fit into an existing cabinet opening. I had to remove the upper drawer and lower cabinet floor, but there was no need to widen the cabinet. In my pictures you can see the dishwasher installed, as well as another cabinet in my kitchen that has the same dimensions. The cavity width is almost exactly 18 inches wide by 32.5 inches tall, and I feel like the Danby fits perfectly. In this price range I found that there were really only 2 options: Danby and Edgestar. Although I liked the more traditional controls on the Edgestar, the Danby was about $50 cheaper and had similar reviews. The controls on this Danby unit are fine, but you definitely need to read the manual; they aren't intuitive. If I was installing the dishwasher in a place where it would be used by a lot of different people, I would have probably gone with the Edgestar for that reason. Performance has been fantastic. I'd say the sound level is normal, and my wife said she's pleasantly surprised with the sound as well. It also cleans by dishes just as well as the 24-inch Frigidaire model that I had in my previous home. I found that unlike in previous 24-inch dishwashers I've owned, rinse-aid is a must in this unit. Without rinse-aid, it does take a very long time for the dishes to become completely dry. Fortunately, the Danby has an indicator light that advises you when rinse aid is low, so this should make it hard to run out. Overall I'm very pleased with this dishwasher, especially since the more well-known brands are twice as expensive! My install took me a few days of casual working, as I was starting from scratch like I mentioned earlier. On the first day I installed a GFCI/AFCI 20 amp circuit to power both the dishwasher and garbage disposal, and installed the garbage disposal. As you can see from my photos, I wired all of the electrical into a single work box with a switch for the garbage disposal for simplicity. As I mentioned earlier, this is an older home, and it was more or less impossible to get the electrical up the wall from the shallow crawlspace below the sink. Furthermore, I didn't want to fool with the backsplash tile and potentially damage it. A different solution would have been an air pressure switch mounted on the counter-top, but that would have taken additional time. Overall I see little to no inconvenience with the in-cabinet switch, and my understanding is this was more common in the past, anyway. The next day I modified the cabinet and installed the dishwasher. The only additional part I needed that isn't typically included in a dishwasher install kit was a y splitter for my water supply. Obviously if you're replacing a dishwasher you'll already have a place to connect your water inlet hose, but given that I was starting from scratch I needed to do that. Since I wasn't installing an air gap, I made sure to route the drain line pretty high to mitigate the risk of a drain backup. On a different day I re-plummed the drain to eliminate my outdated s-trap and to provide a more appropriate and efficient route for my new setup. I also filled some imperfections in the wood trim, sanded, and painted. Although I would have preferred a 24-inch model, this Danby has really brought my kitchen into modern times, and I couldn't be happier. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs an 18-inch solution who's trying to avoid the high prices of the major brands! ... show more

  • Poor Decision To Put The Water Supply On The Front Of The Unit
Color: Stainless Steel Style: Dishwasher
Unit has a constant slow leak at the water supply line inlet. I've purchased 2 different 90 degree elbows/flexible water supply lines (a la universal dishwasher kits), properly sized, and it still leaks. Part of the problem is that the unit's water supply is on the front of the unit instead of the rear. You have to bend the water supply line underneath the unit which causes excess pressure to crank down on the 90 degree elbow...causing a very slow drip leak where the 3/8" 90 degree elbow with thread tape meets threaded water inlet valve. Very unfortunate because the unit is quiet and does a good job on the ECO setting. I purchased this unit after researching on Consumer Reports and I wanted an all-steel unit that had to be 18". Arrived with a small dent in the back right corner which I was willing to overlook as the dent didn't seem to transfer to the inner dimensions of the unit.... Update: 12/21/22 Once I was able to stop the leak, the unit has had no further issues. Still quiet and does a great job on the ECO setting. Changing rating from 3 to 4 stars. ... show more

  • Dents
Color: Stainless Steel Style: Dishwasher
Arrived in good time. Packaging intact. However there are several good sized dents on both back corners. If this affects performance when installed I will return it, if not I will live with it. Should not have been there.

  • Great Little Dishwasher
Color: Black Style: Dishwasher
We have a very small home and wanted a dishwasher that would fit in an existing cabinet space. This dishwasher is perfect. Installation giving 4 stars because the fitting on the front is a little hard to get to, if it was a little higher that would be so much easier. Does a great job cleaning. It doesn’t do a great job drying but I discovered if you crack open the door a few inches right after running, it allows the warm air to escape and the dishes dry fairly quick. We are very pleased with the purchase. ... show more
