  • Excellent, highly efficient small-business/home office shredder
I had done copious research prior to making this purchase. I had wanted the 300-sheet capacity model, but I could not readily find one at the time. I purchased a returned, 150-sheet capacity model. It came directly from the North American headquarters from Dahle, located in New Hampshire, arriving in a day. Instructions were useless. However, it was easy to figure out. At first, the shredder did nothing when I simply powered on and placed a stack of sheets inside. Pressing the forward button solved that. It can be tripped up by envelopes or by papers with frayed edges. Overall, it is extremely reliable. In the first days of ownership, I needed to clear a backlog. I shredded a set of 3,000 pages, and then a set of 2,000 pages. at P-4 size, that filled 2.5 lawn-care bags, or 75 gallons. The shredder did not overheat (sometimes, in the case of a rare paper-jam, it will say it is overheated; take paper out, turn off, turn back on, press forward to clear paper remnants, then reload). Shredding 3,000 pages took approximately 15 minutes of my own time, due to the abiltiy to load and walk away. This shredder will pay for itself in a year based on the opportunity cost of my billable hours (I am a trial lawyer). If I get five years out of it, which seems likely based on the build quality, I'll be very pleased and order another one to replace it. Any time beyond that will be gravy. I had budgeted $1,500 for a much larger shredder, but this thing is a little champ. Each day, I load it and forget it. And when I'm done with a trial, it just chomps up the trial binder, so they're no longer floating about my office. Same thing with large sets of medical records. What a great machine, with the German engineering and very good build quality showing through. Plus, with a smaller size, the bin is easy to tip into a bag. The bin holds about two stacks worth, or 300 pages worth of shreds. All in all, I could hardly be more pleased. Very high-impact, bang-for-buck, quality shredder, that has already met and exceeded expectations. [For background, my prior shredders include, inter alia: a gigantic, straight-cut, industrial shredder from the eighties (straight-cut fills bags too quickly, and a single, plastic gear proved to be an Achilles heel; and, a 24-sheet Amazon Basics shredder that had been impressive, but that used a lot of electricity, and that I had to stand there and feed, losing time).] The shredder says it does not need to be oiled. I'll probably oil the blades periodically. Noise is medium-level. Another reviewer had stated he could do phone-calls in the same room. That is probably true of a large room, but not a small one. At this size and price, I would not consider that a demerit. I would order this auto-feed shredder over many, very expensive, commercial shredder models that are not auto-feed. It will undoubtedly pay for itself over time. ... show more

Henry Ford said: If you need a tool and you don't buy it you will still pay for it but you still won't have it. If you need to do large shredding jobs, say, a years worth of records after the mandatory retention period, and if that will need to be done every year, you cannot beat this machine for economical efficiency. We first considered commercial shredding companies who would come in, take everything away and send a letter that certified destruction. But these were our patients and these were their records and we felt personally as well as professionally responsible for their destruction because, you know, stuff happens. So, commercial quality shredding is now a part of our routine - just stick 200-300 old docs into the Dahle shredder when you are near by, empty when it needs it. I could go on about German engineering but let's just say that quality has not deferred to marketing, but defined it. This is a well engineered and manufactured machine that does exactly what it says it will do with a minimum of fuss. I was confident in it as soon as I heard it doing what it was designed to do: if a paper shredder can be elegant, this one is. ... show more

This unit was one the most expensive units I tried. It is rated P-4 but unless you’re working for the CIA who needs a P-5 level shredding?. The shredded material from this unit is really tiny. The problem is that the P-5 level shredders are really slow. It takes a long time to grind paper down that small so if you don’t need that level of security there are much faster machines like this one that can also handle shredding thicker manual documents. Here are my observations. This machine is lightening fast and corrects for a design flaw typical of the other types of top load shredders. In the other machines—There is a design flaw in the other “set it and forget it” machines. Those shredders are in the middle of the platform meaning the machine sucks in the document and shreds it; so whatever the size of the document it’s doubled when it goes through the shredder. This machine pulls from the bottom of the page. This machine handles stapled documents much better. Still You must sort the documents so the staples are at the top of the page for the machine to work without jamming. It works on fairly thick documents with multiple staples. Good news it’s much better with the autocorrect reversing and trying to correct any jams—it works well. Also there is a large capacity bin and the shredder keeps on shredding until the bin is full. Many of the other machines fell short of full—some stopped at half full—this one is much better than other shredders I’ve used. Finally it was better with thick documents that are manually fed. No need to worry about shredding those credit card invitations that come in the mail with the fake card. This machine shredded the entire mailing. All in all 300 pages but 300 throughly shredded pages with no drama. Really fast…but better costs money. At $600 this delivers a superior product! You have to decide if the aggravation caused by removing staples on the less expensive shredders is worth the trade off. ... show more
