Effective composting requires proper aeration of the compost. Using the compost aerator eliminates some of the work. Aeration is critical to successful composting. Push the Wingdigger down into the compost back and pull it straight up (no twisting, bending, or flipping is needed). Healthy bacteria brought to the top on the 'wings' will do the job for you.

I think this is a well-made product, and it is easy to use, but I would like to see a design improvement.... the folding blades are not long enough to produce the kind of motion needed to stir the compost from the bottom. I find myself poking and stirring, rather than lifting and integrating as intended. ... show more

    • Works Perfectly
This thing is sturdy and efficient. I have seen many other reviews complaining that it is difficult to penetrate the compost pile with it. It does requite some upper body strength to use it, dur to it's diameter but that's what also makes it sturdy and effective, so it's a trade off I am happy with. You also have to think about the makeup of your compost pile. Mine is mostly grass clippings and leaves and kitchen scraps. There are no woody things in my compost. I have found that if you use it to turn the pile regularly and as you add new material it is much easier to drive it to the bottom of the pile and pull it back up. If you let the pile settle for five days or so, it can be a much bigger effort to drive it into the pile on the first couple of attempts. It does work quite well at storing the pile from the bottom up and looks to be capable of holding up to use for many seasons. ... show more

    • Best mixer I've seen
The collapsible prongs make this the absolute best compost mixer. I can easily push this tool down 2 to 3 feet (in my compost bin), pull up, move to a new spot, repeat --- bin is totally mixed and aerated.

Got this to use with a composter I made out of an old garbage can which was too heavy for me to roll. My compost was just sitting there and was getting more stinky and anaerobic, so I was hoping this would get it going again. It works like a charm! I use it every few days to aerate my compost, and it got my compost going again in no time. Now my compost isn't nearly as smelly, and is starting to turn into something more usable in my garden.     • Just as advertised
I have three compost piles. I was originally going to use this on one of them and use a pitchfork on another (and leave another un-turned.) I thought it would be a fund experiment. Within a week I resorted to only using this aerator. The pitchfork made a mess everywhere. With this I can keep my piles neatly enclosed in the pallets I enclosed them in, and can still "turn" them. I've found 2 things. 1) When getting deeper into the piles sometimes I have to stab down a few times to dig into the more solid mass at the lower portions of the pile. 2) If you stab too deeply into the pile it can be difficult to pull back up because of all the mass it's attempting to move. I have found there is a balance between points 1 & 2. I stab hard enough/deep enough to grab enough mass. But still shallow enough I can pull it up. Then if I need to go deeper I repeat the steps a few times in the same area. Which will turn up enough that I can eventually work my way to the bottom of the pile. I think this tool is great. Now it's so easy to turn & mix up my piles now I just need to make sure I'm not doing it TOO much. ... show more
