I am not a baker by any means. I enjoy cooking and trying new things and I've made bread before, but I've never been very good with bread. So when a neighbor offered to provide me with a sourdough starter, I jumped at the chance. And not wanting to screw it up, I went and got this sourdough starter kit. The kit is quite nice: Proofing basket: It's a nice 9" proofing basking with linen cover. Now, I didn't now why I needed a proofing basket, but the dough for sourdough tends to be very wet and without a basket to hold the structure, it will flatten like a pancake. Dough whisk: I admit, I don't really know why you need a dough whisk in this shape, but everyone online seems to think it's a good idea. The shape is identical to the ones they sell on baking websites and this one feels very sturdy. Dough scrapers: I already have one, but it's nice to have more. The plastic one is curved, which can help scrape rounded bowls. Brush: It's a silicone brush and it works fine. Lame: I found out it's pronounced "LAHM". It comes with a set of very sharp razors. It works, but I need to work on my design skills. Thermometer: This is OK. It'll suffice and it reads about as well as my other thermometers in the warm temp range, but when it gets closer to near boiling, it seems to read 2 degrees less than my other ones. I think my first bread turned out pretty decently. I still need to work on the dough a bit more, but kit works very nicely. ... show more

    • Ready to make some bread!
This is a nice set to get started on making bread. It has all the tools and then some that are needed to make artisanal bread. It provides extra blades. I really like the equivalent measures. This would make a nice gift for someone that wants to make bread.
