Top Amazon Reviews

  • Love the SC400D!!! Just works
Style: SC400D Front + Rear View Pattern Name: Dash Cam
I've been using this for 5 months now and it's been fantastic. This review is for the SC400D (I don't know why Amazon is grouping all the Cobra cameras together in the same review pool when all these cameras are so different). So it has the front camera at 4K and rear camera at 1080p. It's just a set it and forget it system. When you turn on the car, it powers up. When you start driving, it starts to record. If you just sit idle with the car running, it'll turn off and then when you start driving, it turns back on and starts recording. When the memory card runs out of space the first time, it'll ask you to format the card and then it'll be able to record continuously without intervention ((loop recording)when it runs out of space, it'll erase the oldest videos so you can keep recording). The way I have it set up, when I'm driving, 3/4 of the screen is for the front camera and 1/4 is for the rear camera. The 1/4 is small so it's not ideal but you could technically use this view to see things when reversing your car. It would be awesome if it would flip the cameras when backing up (e.g., have 3/4 of screen be the rear camera when reversing) but it doesn't. It's very easy to attach and detach because while the mount is almost permanently attached to the windshield with super sticky tape, the camera is attached to the mount by magnets. so if you want to prevent someone from breaking into the car and stealing the camera, you could. The video quality is terrific. It really does look good and the camera comes with a circular polarizer so that you can adjust it so that it cuts down glare and makes the image more vivid. Nighttime, the quality is great for the environment but because the camera exposes for the entire environment, it tends to overexpose the license plates which are white so I guess they decided it's more important to capture the accident than it is to capture the license plate. For things I didn't test... I don't use Alexa so nothing for that. It has a parking mode where it's always recording but it requires that the camera is connected to constant power (which I'm too lazy to have that kind of installation; I just have it connected to a spare cigarette lighter port) or a cigarette lighter that can provide constant power (mine can't; when I turn off the car, it cuts power to the port). I don't use the Drive app because I use a combination of Google Maps and Garmin DriveSmart 86 (which uses Google Maps data and traffic). I don't use Waze because I find it is way too crazy with false alarms (especially with trafffic and cop locations) and has more wrong directions. I ended up getting the SC 400D kit for my other car too because it does work really well. However, it is friggin expensive and I think it should be cheaper because there are cheaper units out there that aren't that much worse. ... show more

  • Defective on arrival and customer service policies are dismal buy a different brand
Style: SC200D Front + Rear View Pattern Name: Dash Cam
I've had Cobra radar detectors in the past so I trusted cobra products as high quality. Bought and installed this camera and ran all the cables for power and rear camera. It immediately started giving me problems and while the record icon was shown the timer would not be counting making me question if any video was being recorded. I was rear ended within a week of installing and when I went to review footage I found that it would record for a few minutes at the start of my trips and then stop recording anything. Camera seems to freeze and no buttons work. Contacted customer service and after a 20 min wait I was told I should try going and buying a new SD card. I refused to spend more money to test if their product was defective and finally got them to send me a new SD card. Rep took my email and said they would send a request for proof of purchase but I never heard back. Finally emailed customer service and got a senior tech who agreed the unit was defective and needed to be sent back. They will not accept just the camera module that can be easily disconnected. They required me to remove all the wiring and the adhesive mounts and send it all back at my expense and claim a 1-3 week turnaround time to get a new camera. They even recommend I pay extra for insurance on the package in case it gets lost. Now I will have to go through all the trouble to reinstall the whole system after I wait for weeks and paying shipping for their defective product. It's a terrible policy. My advice is not to purchase any of their products. But if you do, and it doesn't work, disregard the paperwork that says "don't return to seller, call our customer service!" and send this back to amazon within the return period. ... show more

  • Fantastic camera sensor, but do not expect the wireless connection or app to work worth a damn.
Style: SC200 Front View Pattern Name: Dash Cam
The good: The camera sensor on this thing is fantastic. It's a big upgrade over the $50-$100 price range sensors like Uniden. The HDR on this is great for high contrast situations like sunset / night time. It's still not quite good enough to capture most license plates unless you are directly behind a vehicle in stand still traffic, but the technology is definitely getting better than previous generations of sensors, both in clarity and in handling of lighting conditions not conducive for traditional photography. The sticker works great in temperate climates like Pennsylvania. Much better than a suction cup design. The self-contained GPS works well. It detects speeds accurately, with a minimum of lag, maybe 4-5 seconds after a speed change, it picks it up correctly. Now the bad: The wireless in this thing is trash. The app cannot maintain a connection to the phone long enough to do anything useful. The phone often cannot connect to the device. I have flashed the thing with the latest firmware via usb and even then, the wireless is total garbage. In total, I've spent around 3 hours trying to get the wireless connection to actually work from a variety of distances and devices and it just does not work. I'm mostly using a LG V60 and a Samsung S10E, which are premium flagship android phones capable of all modern wireless standards with a great set of antennas. The phones connect to literally everything else I own including some wild Chi-Fi devices, and this is the only device that gives me consistent trouble, and it's a fairly pricey device from a major manufacturer. I do not expect to be able to use the wireless during a crash use case. I expect to have to pull the card and place a replacement card in it. With that expectation in mind, it's not much different than older generations of cameras, so not terrible - but I feel they shouldn't even try if it's going to be this bad of a user experience. I'm an expert level computer scientist who grunted my way up the ranks by doing product support for years and I couldn't get it to work. Your average Joe has 0 chance in heck to not be totally frustrated if they expect the wireless to work. The meh: Sometimes this thing resets while driving. It has an ok failsafe, where it starts back up pretty quickly, but sometimes I look at it and wonder wtf is going on. It happens once in a while, but it's enough to notice. My other cameras tend to not do this. ... show more
