  • Nice while it works, but one of the Control Units was dead on arrival...now on 3rd replacement unit
Size: King (80" L x 76" W)
02/04/2021, Original Post - [one star review] Before I made my purchase, I saw a significant number of reviews that indicated the product was good when it worked, but suffered from poor manufacturing quality. Reviews were mostly five stars, but there were about 15% that were one star...and the one star reviews generally said the product was DOA, or failed shortly thereafter. I decided to play the odds. Unfortunately, one of my two control units was dead on arrival. I sent a message to the vendor, and the manufacturer, requesting a replacement unit. I'll update this review with the results of my replacement request. But whatever happens, I'll lose sleep wondering when the next unit will go bad... Update 1 - 02/04/2021, received first reply from Seller - Kryo. They suggested I try plugging it in again, and using a different outlet. That isn't the problem. So, kudos on the quick reply, but 0 for 1 on helpfulness. I re-submitted my request for a replacement unit. Update 2 - 02/06/2021, received second reply from Kryo. They asked for serial # (of dead unit) and shipping address. They say they will process the replacement request. I sent the info they requested. Back to waiting mode. (Note: Other unit seems to be working fine, and the app was easy to set up.) More to come... Update 3 - 02/11/2021, received replacement unit today. Replacement seems to be working fine. They also sent 'return' instructions & shipping label for the dead unit. It has now gone to meet it's maker, in a literal sense. Based on the quick responsiveness of the manufacturer, I've upped my rating to three stars. As of today, the units are both operating as expected. If they continue to do so, I probably won't update again, unless it is to up the rating to four stars after a couple of years. I WILL update this post if there are any other problems with how well the units perform their intended function. Update 4 - 05/27/2021. Well, I'm back. The other original control unit (not the first replacement) has started leaking water (has to be refilled every few days). It needs to be replaced. I just contacted the manufacturer, and I'll update again about how the process goes. Sad thing is, my wife & I both like the product when it's working. We both sleep better with it. But quality control at the manufacturer seems to be a real issue. Update 5 - 07/05/2021. I received a replacement control unit (#2) on June 14. I opened the box, took the fill cap off the unit, and could see that the inside was...filthy. Clearly this is a used unit that has been (presumably) refurbished, but not cleaned (maybe ever). I set it aside until I had time to decide what to do. The next weekend, I took a couple days to clean the unit using Kryo’s directions (multiple times, allowing the unit to run with cleaning solution and filtered water, then emptying the gunk and repeating the process; see pictures above for context). Over time, the gunk stopped blocking the ports as it was being drained, and eventually the water seemed reasonably clear. I've now been using this unit for the last two weeks, and it seems to be working fine. Still, from a reasonable customer perspective, this process was unacceptable. On June 23 I contacted the manufacturer and informed them of the situation. A day or two later they offered yet another replacement control unit. (For those of you still reading, that will be my third replacement.) They guarantee that they will send a new unit, and they will also provide a few packets (6) of cleaning solution so I can clean my Chilipad and replenish my cleaning solution supply. As I said in my initial review, I don’t have any reason for confidence that the new unit will be any more reliable than the others. Today I provided the confirmation they needed to initiate shipment of replacement unit #3! Update 6 - 07/18/2022. Yes, 2022. Quick update for the last year. I received the new control unit in July 2021, it worked fine. Entire system worked fine for about 6 months, then in December 2021 developed a leak in the tubes going into the cooling pad. Both plastic tubes appeared degraded, and both were leaking. I only used distilled water, and only used ChiliPAD cleaning solution. Apparently, the tubing had been leaking basically since I bought the system – although the tube leaked more or less based on the positioning of the tube. Water ran down the foam insulation tubing & under the control unit, so it initially appeared as if the control unit was leaking. Once informed, Kryo quickly replaced the Hydronic pad with a better-designed one (the tubing can be removed for cleaning or replacement, or when pad is being washed). The current configuration has worked well for the last several months; no problems at present. Current verdict: When working, the product is great. The equipment seems to have (or had) production issues, but Kryo customer service has been outstanding (quick to act, fair, and reliable). ... show more

  • Love the Ooler, some very minor issues
Size: King (80" L x 76" W)
Decided to pay for the manufactured product rather than assemble these parts myself and I'm very happy I did. Ooler, though a silly name, is a good product that does exactly what it says it does. We chose the Ooler over the others partially based on price but also based on the form-factor. The Ooler vs. the earlier Chilisleep should fit under most beds to allow hiding them away and reducing audible noise from them, though they are pretty quiet to begin with. Likes: Initially very quiet Effective cooling Automatic scheduling is nice. Wife is starting to use the variable temperature through the night. Improvements: Some gaps in specificity of instructions. Requires water additions over time, despite being a closed system. Power cords not long enough. 8' water hoses, 6' power cord. Hoses are fused to mattress pad, which limits serviceability. Starting to get some fan noise now, and will be addressing that with Chilisleep. If placed under the bed, would be nearly silent but makes it difficult to add water in most beds, I think. Ours sit at the foot of the bed, so are not muffled by the bed foundations and mattress. With the units at the foot of the bed, there is plenty of excess hose tucked under the bed, but the power cords are not long enough to also feed the units. I think a power cord closer to 10-12' would have a marginal additional cost for manufacturing, but would meet expectations from customers of a luxury product like this. The lines in the unit can be felt while laying on them or running your hand over it. Did not take long to get used to this, but probably explains why some of the competition advises putting the pad on the mattress, not under the sheet (like Ooler). While moving the pad under a mattress topper would remove the issue with feeling the water lines, I think it would dramatically reduce the effectiveness of the cooling of the individuals. The water in this system does get dirty, though I haven't identify why yet. Some is bacterial growth, which is mostly kept in check with the built-in UV light, but flushing the system on-occasion is appropriate. After doing a little research, I purchased extra connectors for the hoses and Ooler from an aquarium shop and built an open loop to be able to flush the water from the system in one complete cycle rather than filling, running, and draining just the Ooler portion and diluting any dirty water in the system. One hose in the fresh water, one hose in a bucket and run the pump until satisfied. Still determining how much water is actually in the system to know how much to flush through it. Aside from these items, the unit just exists on the bed and turns on and off by itself, so we don't even have to think about them when it's time for bed. Don't be fooled by the competition that sells similarly functioned blankets into thinking they are better solely based on the overhead infrared pictures compared to these mattress pads. It, of course, is going to be cooler looking down on the cooling pad than on the sleeper, but I think the greater contact surface with the mattress pads will perform better and remove more heat than the blankets, though I have no empirical evidence. This is not to say the blankets don't work but the marketing is misleading. ... show more
