This is wonderful! My first electric winder and I love it. It makes such beautiful cakes. I will say that it is very hard to find the center pull, but I used a trick I saw online to put a bit of colorful tape on the end and it was easy to find then. It didn’t take long to get the hang of. It does very well of restarting after it gets hung up. I will sit and watch it while it works because although it goes smoothly it does occasional help when the yarn gets stuck on the swift. I like the winder. It is better than using a hand winder or hand balling yarn but the motor sounds as if it’s struggling and will slow down slightly. I think if they put in a more powerful motor this product could easily be a five star product across the board. The reason I say that is that sometimes the winding stops and it’s not because of a snag, it just needs more power to pull the yarn off the swift. If they did come out with an improved product with a stronger motor I would absolutely buy that one too. ... show more

    • A Great Idea That Could Improve Its Execution

As a long time user of hand-crank ball winders, this electric ball winder is great in theory and decently designed in reality with some caveats. It comes needing some assembly, and the instructions include a QR code that leads to some videos. The videos are unfortunately more advertisement than assembly, but it’s still reasonably intuitive to put together. As near as I can tell, two extra screws are included as I could only find three places that needed them and the instructions didn’t show any other spots to put them. The motor sounds a little underpowered, but it does produce a reasonably neat, tight ball. I tried it on an inexpensive acrylic that was a big loose mess and it was very nice to have both hands free to detangle as it spun. It is designed to pause when it feels resistance, so as long as you’re actively monitoring it, you have time to stop it and correct any tangles. If not stopped, it will start up again automatically within a few seconds, so if not actively monitored, I could see it burning out the motor if it got jammed while unattended. There are 2 spring loaded clips that hold the yarn in place without being difficult to load, as well as two notched plastic guide holes so in total the yarn is threaded through four places to guide it on to the winder. As a knitter who uses a lot of expensive, sometimes delicate, yarns, I would hesitate to use this winder with them out of concern I may lightly felt or otherwise create some wear from all those contact points compared with a traditional hand-crank ball winder that has one smooth metal ring as the only guide. That said, it was pretty fun to use on a workhorse yarn I was confident could handle the extra friction! ... show more
