  • does not do bulky yarns
I have a lot of bulky and super bulky yarn. When I used this winder for the yarn it constantly stalled. I would have to help guide the yarn by hand just to help it move smoothly. I contacted the seller and their emails were weird. It was like my conversations were translated however they did not answer my questions. I decided to return it and do research on which one will work well with bulky. ... show more

  • I Really Like This Yarn Winder
Bottom line: this thing works much better than the hand crank one I've been using for years, but lets go into the details as to why I personally like it so much. First, when you open the box you'll find, among everything you need to put it together, a book with really clear and easy to follow instructions, but the first page of that book features a QR code. The QR code leads to a playlist on YouTube with two videos, both showing you how to assemble and use the winder. One is vertical with a digitally generated narrator, and the other is horizontal and unnarrated. This is a great accessibility feature because sometimes even the best written instructions with pictures don't work for some people where one of those videos will. Second, it's extremely convenient to use. The clamp is not as deep as many other brands, allowing it to be used on more surfaces while still being stable. It uses USB-C for power, which means I can use any of the dozens of USB chargers I've accumulated over the years to get it going, and even though it comes with a nice long USB-C cable, it can use others if I lose the one it comes with. Third, the motor seems to respond to tension surprisingly well; the nature of the rotation of this kind of device means that the tension is fluctuating rapidly even with the tension wheels being used, and the motor appears to slow and and speed up in response to that, which also allows you to react should something get caught in the tension wheels (by turning off the machine and then removing it from the tension wheels). The tension wheels are also such a nice feature, because they ensure that no loops, large knots, etc. are being fed into the machine, which has been an issue I've dealt with a lot over the years with my old hand crank yarn winder. Finally, it's just easy to understand once put together. Assembly isn't that difficult, but once it's together it's pretty easy to figure out how the controls work and how to get it going. Overall, I'm very pleased with this. ... show more

  • So handy - I hope it will last
I have been wanting a yarn winder because it takes me so long to do it by hand and the kids hate helping out. The box was crushed by the parts were still good. The cone and gears are plastic, so we hope it will last and will need to be careful with it. We tested it on cheap yarn: finding the right speed and tension took a minute. You can't walk away from it; you need to make sure the yarn unwinds properly, without knots. It formed a pretty ball in minutes, so this will definitely save me time! ... show more

  • Awful
So I tried to make a cake with a velvet type yarn size 4. I did a center pull. For the first part, I had to hand feed the machine. The machine is not powerful enough to where if there is any resistance, it stops. Then you have to turn the machine off and then back on. Also the directions are awful on how to use this machine. Thankfully I was able to watch the video a couple times to get the gist of how to load the yarn. I honestly expected more from this price point. The cake isn’t tight, also it isn’t even. I would not recommend this item. I prefer my hand crank one (around the same price point) that takes me less effort to make a cake. ... show more

  • Works well, but not as fast as a hand crank winder
The media could not be loaded. I ordered this to replace my older hand crank yarn winder with hopes that it would work as fast as the manual winder but with less stress on my wrist. This automatic winder does work but there is a bit of a learning curve. I use a wooden Amish swift for my yarn, and it is slow and steady. I think its slowness does not work well with this winder. My yarn ball often had to be unwound and redone because of inconsistent tension. I also primarily knit with fingering weight yarn. I’m not sure if a heavier weight yarn would work better with this. Set up for this winder was simple. I did watch the video as suggested by the directions but the instructions booklet was sufficient in explaining set up. It isn’t perfect, but I think the more I use it the easier it will be. The two hanks of yarn I wound took time, but they are now in sturdy center pull balls, so this item does what it advertises. ... show more

  • I basically ruined a hank of high end yarn.
The media could not be loaded. I absolutely hate giving bad reviews but I’m really left with no option here. I used a size 2 (fingering weight) yarn of hand dyed Merino wool. Very light weight and very expensive yarn. Well it’s pretty much ruined now. I love the concept of an electric powered yarn winder because I tend to get hand and arm cramps when winding yarn but this just isn’t it. The motor struggles to keep up and the speed will increase and decrease on its own. I show it in the video. It’s just not durable. The tension arm is not secure at all. It wobbles and moves about. I think the screw needs to be longer. The metal arm is not the same as the one shown in the pics either. The yarn bunches up at the top and the bottom of the skein. I’m not sure what the issue with that is. On a positive note, it’s easy to use as you just turn a knob. The tension is ok and it’s not too bulky at all. If they fix the motor issues and make it stronger and make the tension arm more secure to the base then this would be a good automatic winder. Until then I won’t be able to use this product. ... show more

  • Great product
I was surprised by some of the negative reviews on this item. I found it to be a great addition to my yarn world! The sound of the winder is less than those that are hand operated. It is simple to assemble, and the instructions provide a video on how to operate. It does take a little getting used to, but once you do, it is wonderful! ... show more
