  • Excellent Upgrade to standard pipe lighters
I've been going through the standard pipe gas log lighters that you get from the big box stores every couple of years. Despite trying to rotate the pipe so ash doesn't fall directly into the gas chamber holes, they still collect debris and end up closing. After a couple of years, you're generally missing two or three outlet holes so the fire doesn't start evenly. This is a heavy duty cast iron starter that has built in protection, a lip that hangs over the outlets, protecting them from debris. I like that it has heavy duty feet to support the weight so I don't feel like there will be a bend that can create problems down the road. My only real knock is that I wish it was a little longer. I looked for a longer model but couldn't find one, although that doesn't mean they don't exist. 18" would be perfect for my fireplace. Overall, great buy and I think this one should last decades rather than years. ... show more

Works great. I like the flat top so that when the ashes get deep, I can slide my little ash shovel across the top and clear a path for the gas to burn. Nice and heavy cast iron with nice casting and finish. Fittings went right in without issue. It has a lip over the burner holes to keep the ashes out. Makes starting a fire easy as can be. Light match or long lighter, hold next to burner, turn on gas, and poof, you have fire. Make sure to turn it off when you are done. I would buy it again, but currently only have one fireplace and this will last a life time and then some. ... show more

  • Best I’ve found
Expensive? Yes. Awkward design? Yes. Durable? Yes. As others have stated, you can’t spin it on and have it sit flat on the legs. So spin it on then shim it. It also shoots flame sideways. Most fireplace lighters are ported at the center of the firebox and you put the lighter directly under the wood. This works great a couple times until all the holes get clogged with ash and the lighter disintegrates because it cooks in a pile of hot cools. This lighter is designed to be set in the front flames shooting back or against the back wall flames shooting forward. This keeps the lighter out of harms way, out of the heat zone, but sends the flames where they need to go. Put some elbows on your existing gas feed and move it to the front or back of the box. ... show more

  • Solid solution
I have been using the typical pipe solution with holes drilled in it for the last 5 years since we had our house built. I burn about a face cord per year, and every year I need to replace the log lighter because the heat deteriorates the pipe. The worst part is that when trying to uninstall it for replacement it breaks off due to the deterioration and makes it harder. Finally I decided to find a better solution, and located this. I also installed a union so it would be easier to replace the entire setup when needed. This this is built solid, time will tell how it holds up, but i expect several years as of compared to a year for the pipe type. It costs more, but you get what you pay for. Be aware, this does not have a regulator and therefore it's a blowtorch! My first time lighting I burned my arm hair off as the flames came out of the fireplace, no joke. Light it slow and off to the side, then increase. ... show more
