Top Amazon Reviews

  • Disappointed but good GPS Head Unit
Update: I increased my rating from 3 to 5 stars for one reason, customer service. Their customer service is excellent. After I posted the review the company contacted me through Amazon numerous times to discuss the reasons for the long cable and for not including an alternate mounting bracket. Their reasons made sense. They also offered to send any different bracket at no cost. I didn't take them up on it since I was not to happy with Android Auto but the Carpuride 9.3 inch HD Portable head-unit is excellent. Original Post: The Carpuride 9.3 inch HD Portable CarPlay/Android Auto head-unit has a very nice 1600x600 display that is both bright and a good size. Also it is thin and the touch response is fast but for me it had way too many issues to want to install it. This version came with “Superpower Speakers” which looks like a nice option but that is also a problem. It came with no other mounting adapters. You either use the speaker mount, the passenger holds the head-unit in their hands, or you will need to buy a different mounting adapter. Carpuride makes a sticker bracket mount, a suction-cup mount, a CD-slot mount, and an air-outlet bracket mount but none of these are provided. So if you decide to not use the “Superpower Speakers” and connect the audio to your car via Bluetooth, you will still need to use the speakers as the only provided mount. Additionally, the speaker mount need to be fastened down to a flat surface with double-sided sticky tape. You cannot just put the connected head-unit/speaker mount on you dash because the combination is so top heavy it immediately falls over. Since the speaker is USB powered, it needs to be plugged into a power source. Fortunately the Carpuride unit can provide that power and they supply a short USB-A to USB-C power cable to do just that. Next the powered speaker needs to get the audio signal from the head-unit so there is another cable. This audio cable goes from the audio-out on the Carpuride unit to the audio-in on the powered speaker. Again Carpuride provides that cable but unlike the short USB power cable, this audio cable is 5 ft long. The distance needed is 6 inches. The 5 ft length is nice if you are connecting to some other different audio device but this cable is to connect the Carpuride unit to the powered speaker mount that you need to use. If you actually use this supplied audio cable, because it is so long, you will have a big wad of wire wrapped up on your dash. Since I do not have Apple devices, I was not using the IOS Carplay or IOS Airplay functions of the Carpuride. I only tried the Android Auto and Android Autolink functions. With Android Auto, the navigation function looked very nice and quick. This one function is a real plus for having the Carpuride. Also the music streaming worked well. But Android Auto only has a limited number of apps that run; there is no large clock app. So with the limited Android Auto apps, the next option was to use Android’s Autolink. You need to download and install a mirror app from a QR code in the manual. After installing you then need to turn off the phone’s wifi, turn on the phone’s hotspot, and set the hotspot to “car” and password “12345678”. Wow, I was not going to do that each time I wanted to use Autolink not to mention opening a security issue. Third option is the Android Wired Mirror function. This process still requires a mirror app installed on the phone from a QR code in the manual. If you use the wired mirror function, you need to unplug the speaker’s USB power cable from the Carpuride to plug in the phone’s USB tether cable. Now the powered speaker mount has no power. You would need an additional USB-C cable and power source to keep the speaker mount working. I could never get the Carpuride to communicate with my phone using either of the Android mirror functions, only Android Auto worked. I kept getting device unavailable even though I performed multiple factory resets on the Carpuride and reinstalling the phone app. Perhaps the IOS functions (Carplay and Airplay) work better but for me, the Android connections and functions we disappointing. As a large GPS navigation head unit the Carpuride is great. But for me it is not worth doing so with the other Android connection issues. ... show more

  • Mostly very good.
I have an older 2010 car that I love and don't want to get rid of, but the screen in it is early tech and limited, especially when it comes to mapping programs. It was one where you had to buy a separate update program if you wanted new streets and roads included and live traffic was not part of it. That's the only thing that frustrated me about the car. Like most people, I've used my phone for maps, but that can be small and difficult to use. I loved that a product like this was available. I'm going to say right from the start that even though I have a couple issues, I still like this product and can recommend it. Here are my issues: First, connecting to phone is spotty. It does it properly only about 60% of the time. Sometimes I have to power the unit off and back on again, sometimes I have to clear the bluetooth connection and try again. It's frustrating. Second, the mounting tape included sucks. It held it to my dash for all of 2 days before letting loose and causing the unit to frequently fall off the dash. I haven't figured out a solution to this yet. I might need to go get better tape. When it connects and works, it's awesome for my needs. When it doesn't connect and falls off my dash, it makes me think about just switching back to my phone again. The long cord doesn't bother me. I just tuck it into the trim. I'm torn between giving this 3 or 4 stars. If I could get it to stay mounted, I'd probably give 4 and if it stayed connected it would go to 5. As it is right now, this is a good value on my scale, which is: Excellent(Buy now!), Great, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor(Avoid at all costs!). ... show more

  • Nice Way to Spruce Up an Old Car's System - Almost ANY Old Car
This head unit will work with about anything out there, and it's "portable" which means you don't exactly replace your old head unit, you just add it and make it your primary new head unit, but now it does everything. I tried this one with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and found both worked fine. Connection to phone is usually going to be Bluetooth, but you can cable connect to it. Speed is a bit slower than what you'll find on a modern car, but the thing is running on lower power - off the car's standard 12 volts, which you can do internally or with even just a round-plug. Nice versatility. Now I've got the ability to run a lot of software that previously I had to forego or have other devices to handle for me, such as a GPS unit that I was itching to get rid of in an older truck where I placed this unit. The truck is shared by several workers at my shop, so having both CarPlay and Android Auto is great - the guys (and gals) can run whichever one they want and play their own tunes list from their phones, and keep their route-maps on their phones in Google Maps and then run that through this unit. It's a one-size-fits-all solution that actually works, and works well. It's early in my usage of it, but so far it's doing more than some of the factory units in some of my newer trucks, which I'm happy about. That lets us run some apps related to tracking and routes taken and fuel consumption and estimated workloads that we want to have going - and we know where the truck (asset) is at all times. An excellent unit to put into almost anything, with a simple (enough) installation, especially if you've done any car stereo work before. I like it and recommend it. Good piece of equipment. ... show more

  • I'm loving it!
My van doesn’t have CarPlay, so this was a nice addition. It installed easily and works well. I like that it's screen is very low profile. It was very easy and intuitive to set up. I am very impressed!
