  • High-quality, but basic, camera.
This camera straddles the line between a five and four star product. If I could give four and a half stars, I would, but I'm stuck giving it five. Having said that, it's time I began the actual review. This camera is not for everyone. Obviously not; many people don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a camera in the first place. However, it does fill a role in the photographic community, and it does so very effectively. This camera seems to be designed for someone who wants high-quality photos, without the hassle and expense of professional cameras. It is, at its core, a very nice "point-and-shoot" camera; it's extremely lightweight, it has a quality sensor, and the 50x zoom comes in handy under all sorts of circumstances. It's something of a niche role, but the camera fits it very well. However, it does have its flaws. For example, it does not have the ability to natively shoot panoramas. It also can't shoot in RAW format, or use many external devices that a high-quality camera could. The menu controls are somewhat obtuse, and I've found the auto focus to be unreliable. These sorts of things are the price you pay, however, for getting such a compact, simple camera. Note that I said simple - this shouldn't be read as low-quality. The camera does perform all of the basic photographic requirements, and performs them well. If you're new to photography, and just want to get some good photos to share with your friends, this camera will do nicely. However, if you ever become serious about the craft, you will miss the options that this camera lacks. ... show more

  • Great price, great camera, higher-than-average quality vacation photos for some amateurs.
Me and my husband bought this camera for our trip to Disney World. We wanted a nicer digital camera but not one that was overly-fancy or overly-expensive. This definitely delivered. It was not bulky and light enough for us to carry on our necks or in our bag around the parks all day. It also seemed very durable, not so delicate that I worried about it knocking around a little or setting it down on a hard surface. As far as quality of the camera itself goes, I think it is great. As a person who doesn't know much about photography, it has a ton of setting on it to make your pictures look however you want them to. Yet I still didn't feel it was overly-complicated so that I didn't feel comfortable using it (that is, if you read the instruction manual before-hand, which I highly recommend, as I learned a ton about features I had no idea existed!) The battery life on it was very much enough for us. We spent all day every day at the parks with it, turning it on whenever we were taking a picture and turning it off when we weren't, and it only died on us on one day. We bought seperately a pack of extra batteries for it, so if you're going to be a crazy heavy user of it in one day, there is a solution for that problem. Overall, I really loved this camera. It did exactly what we wanted it to do. Took nice quality photos of our vacation, for a really decent price. Much better than any of those compact digital cameras I've ever used, but probably not as good as any fancy DSLR camera a photography hobbyist would have. Anyone who is looking for professional quality or something really really fancy in a camera, you may be disappointed. But if you are looking to spend a little amount of money for some higher-than-average quality vacation photos, this is a great choice. ... show more

  • Not Quite Perfect - But Close Enough
I have now taken about 600 photos in a variety of conditions with this camera, and am extremely satisfied. Its internal programming for point-and-shoot use is very sophisticated and takes great pictures with excellent color balance. The optical zoom is amazing, and has not presented any stability problems. I have not tried to shoot with either aperture priority of shutter-speed priority. The various filter and lighting options are amusing, but not essential, If I didn't like the camera so much, I would deduct a star for the following: 1. As noted by many others, the LCD viewscreen is very hard to see when shooting in bright sunlight. I knew this from other reviews ahead of time, and decided that at the price, I would learn to live without an optical viewfinder. 2. The documentation - both in print and on-line - might as well be written in Bulgarian (I am an English speaker with an honors degree in English literature). Come on Canon: can't you hire someone to write your mterials in comprehensible prose? 3. I can't figure out how to read the memory card from a card-reader plugged into my computer's USB port. That said, however, importing photos is easy to do using Canon's free photo software and a USB-to-B cord plugged into to the port on the camera. ... show more
