Description

The EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens delivers a superb combination of cutting-edge performance, compact construction and brilliant resolving power that's great for sports and wildlife photography. The lens features one fluorite and one super UD element to help provide impressive contrast and resolution with reduced chromatic aberration across the entire zoom range. Canon's new Air Sphere Coating (ASC) helps significantly reduce backlit flaring and ghosting, while fluorine coatings on the front and rear lens surfaces help lessen smears and fingerprints. A 9-blade circular aperture renders beautiful, soft backgrounds, and a 3 mode (standard, panning and exposure only) Optical Image Stabilizer provides up to 4 steps of image correction. The new inner focusing AF system helps ensure fast and accurate focus down to 3.2 ft. with a .31x maximum magnification. Usability enhancements include a rotation-type zoom ring with adjustable zoom torque for more precise, customizable zoom performance, a redesigned tripod mount that can be attached and detached without removing the lens from the camera, and an all-new lens hood with a side window that makes it simple to adjust specialty filters-like polarizers-without the need to remove the hood. Ruggedly constructed with advanced dust and water sealing for durability in a range of environments, the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens is a stellar performer with refined controls for a wide variety of situations. • Focus speed is super fast. In the field
This is a very enjoyable piece of glass. Its got enough range for doing serious wildlife. If you want even more range, attach the optional 1.4x converter (MkIII) for even more reach. Yet, when equipped with an extension tube, its equally capable in doing nature close-ups of bees, dragonflies, or butterflies. Focus speed is super fast. In the field, It handles well and is well balanced and easy to hold. The images are noticeably sharper than the Mk I version. Build quality is terrific as is expected of an "L" series lens. It does weigh about 3.5 pounds, but like I said, its well balanced so that doesn't seem to be as big of an issue as it otherwise would be. Bottom line, you get a lot of versatility with this lens. I got mine refurbished for around $1800.00 and I feel it was money well spent. ... show more

  • Nearly perfect lens with 70D Canon Body
I bought this lens because my Tamron did not often focus up to 400mm with distinct quality. I read countless reviews before deciding to try the Canon 100-400. For me it is an expensive investment to an already too large number of lenses. Some of the reviews said that the Canon did not autofocus with the 70D, and some said it was just incompatible. Most said it was fantastic, clear and though a bit heavy, a great wildlife investment. What I have found in taking multiple pictures is: 1. It is quite compatible with my 70D Canon. I am not using it with a 1x converter and don't intend to. 2. It autofocuses MOST of the time quickly and with amazing precision all the way to 400. 3. When it doesn't autofocus quickly, I move it back to 300, focus and move back to 400 and usually it works. Usually at 400 mm, it doesn't like to autofocus quickly because the colors are too much the same and I think that the autofocus has problems at 400mm when the colors or background are similar. 4. At first I could not get it to auto focus easily on big birds flying high at 400, but I had forgotten to check the focus area. Make sure you have it on 1 spot (not 19 spot auto) and it is perfect. You can also go to, the manual focus is great then and fast. 5. If you again pull back the focus a bit, find your bird and then open it back, you get it unless the bird is super fast. 6. I love experimenting with the focus, evaluative and spot and landscape focus. I'm going with spot when bird shooting and this lens is amazing. Above you see the zoom at 400mm and this border collie was looking at me, and the fence around. Another addition after using this lens quite a bit. If I ever get a Full Frame camera (doubt it) this lens is compatible. So my final analysis is that it is worth every penny. It feels incredibly sturdy, has the extra tripod stand adapter if you want to use two or put one on the lens itself. I have found that I can hand hold fairly easily down to 1/30. This lens also focuses on tight long area landscapes so particularly to shoot birds or animals in trees or woods you can spot autofocus on them. Nice nice crisp lens. ... show more

The lens I received looks new. So far it works as expected. Though, AF doesn’t work with my Canon 2xExtender viii. I’d read In reviews that was the case, so no surprise; but I hoped it would work. C’est La Vie. Canon advertises that the lens and extender are compatible. Technically true I suppose, just no AF. However, the manual focus is easier to operate with this lens than my Sigma 150-600, so I think it will work well. I’ll need to use it more to be able to get a good feel for how well the photography is with the lens. Update: AF works in live view. ... show more

  • Very clean lens, focused is tight and overall looks new!
So far I'm very happy with this lens, I've only had a Chace to take a few pictures, but the focus is very fast and accurate. I will post pictures as soon as I can.

  • Horrible Quality!
The description said "renewed" with a 1 year Canon warranty and all original items and at arms length no visible marks. I received a third party bag, third party lens hood, several scratches on the body, several scratches on the element, visible dust inside the lens behind the front glass. Even the color of the lens body looked a little "off". I've owned one of these before. I can't belive the description was way off on this. I would almost question if it even had a warranty as this item looks very used. Will never buy a renewed item ever again! ... show more

  • Excellent lens for wildlife photography
I purchased this as new-used and I'm extremely happy with my purchase. I used to hike with a Tamron 150-600mm on my Canon 90d, with a 300mm prime lens in my pack. This replaces both of those lenses! Although it "only" goes to 400mm, the picture clarity is so good at 400mm that it outperforms the Tamron at 650mm. ... show more
