  • Love this stuff for growing micro greens and it doesn't mold
I prefer buying this Garden Coir vs. the blocks because it's fluffy and ready to use rather than having to break up blocks. I use it primarily to grow micro greens. Because of the moisture retention, it works well for germinating seeds, and the light and airy texture promotes healthy root growth. This may seem like a small bag, but it is surprising how much it grows when you add water. What I love about this growing medium is that it does not promote the growth of algae or mold. It also helps to maintain moisture, is easily hydrated, and promotes root growth. I am using this Garden Coir for growing micro greens. I use germination paper to prevent the coconut coir from falling through the openings in the tray, sprinkle the seeds on top of the moist coconut coir, and cover the seeds for a couple of days until they start to germinate. Once the seeds start germinating, I put nutrient solution in the bottom tray, and mist the growing plants. As you can see from the second picture, the roots of the plants have grown through the Garden Coir and germination paper to reach the nutrient solution below. When these micro greens get to 3"-4", I cut off the tops for salads, soups, etc. and they continue to grow to be harvested again. UPDATE 8/14/19: The last picture was taken about 3 weeks after the first picture. I have already harvested these micro greens multiple times for addition to 3 salads each time, and the greens are still happily growing. in a little over 1 inch of this coconut coir. I couldn't be happier with the results of this growing medium. UPDATE 8/08/20: I grow quite a few veggies and herbs in my basement under lights, and sometimes root cutting from my plants to grow new plants for myself and friends. I had been using a rooting hormone and FoxFarm potting soil to root cuttings. This has been working very well, but I recently decided to try rooting 4 cutting of rosemary - 2 using potting soil and 2 using this Garden Coir medium. I used the same rooting hormone for all of them. The cuttings in the Garden Coir grew roots I could see at the bottom of the pots almost 2 weeks sooner than the cuttings in the potting soil. I believe this happened because the Garden coir drains better than potting soil and stays moist (not wet) for longer. I hope this review was helpful for you. I will update the review if my opinion changes or when I learn more uses for it. ... show more

  • A Clean Coir medium
I like to use coir as an organic component of my soft succulent medium mix. I usually purchase the bricks & reconstitue them however, the brick coir quality is unreliable. This Burpee coir has always been clean , sweet smelling, omri-rated and seems chemical-free ( unlike many bricks sold here on AZ) which makes it worth a higher price for me when mixing small batches. ... show more

  • Great product
Item was overpriced at the time it was purchased. I returned it because it was 3 times the amount charged at the local store. Return was quick and easy. It’s amazing an amazing mixture with perlite and earthworms casting.

  • Great base for potting mix.
I love this coir. I usually buy the coir bricks, but this is ready to go without having to expand. I use it as a base for my succulent mix, to start my veggie seedlings and my tropical indoor plants. It really is a good clean, light base to start with that is easy to amend for specific types of plants. I just wish the seller would keep it at the $4 price all the time. ... show more

  • Contaminated With Insects: Ruined Worm Bin
Okay, so I trust Burpee with so many things! That's why I bought this manageable amount of coir for bedding in my worm bin....and within 2 days I had a massive horde of little bugs crawling on the surface of my worm's bedding and the lip and sides of the top tray in their compost stacking bin system. SO MAD. I had a great home for my worms with great ph, proper moisture, non bad smells, great nutrition and no insects of any kind--I even freeze and then reheat their scraps in the microwave to avoid bugs like fruit flies. These worms have a great life in my daylight basement. Nope: just leave the contamination of my bin to Burpee. I had heard that some kind of coir is contaminated with little bugs depending on where it comes from in Asia.....but I'm not sure my worms' little new roommates are those kind. These are fast-moving and not the types of mites you'd usually find in a worm bin. ... show more

  • had spores/mold
This bag had spores/mold right when I opened it, took them out coz I thought it was only the topmost that was affected but heck no! It was all over. Asked for a refund, customer service was helpful.

  • My Seedling love this
I could actually sit and play in this it would produce a calming effect. More of my seedlings produce with this soil and produce pretty rapidly. Would recommend this to any gardener for seed starting and for plants all the way around. Mine all seem to love it.

  • Great for growing cat grass
I use this in the catit cat grass growing tray, instead of vermiculite. I add some perlite to keep it light, and then sprinkle seeds on top and water lightly. Works perfectly, and the grass grows a lot longer before needing to be reset.
