Description

Building Valve Amplifiers is a unique hands-on guide for anyone working with tube audio equipment--as an electronics hobbyist, audiophile or audio engineer. This 2nd Edition builds on the success of the first with technology and technique revisions throughout and, significantly, a major new self-build project, worked through step-by-step, which puts into practice the principles and techniques introduced throughout the book.Particular attention has been paid to answering questions commonly asked by newcomers to the world of the valve, whether audio enthusiasts tackling their first build or more experienced amplifier designers seeking to learn about the design principles and trade-offs of "glass audio." Safety considerations are always to the fore, and the practical side of this book is reinforced by numerous clear illustrations throughout. The only hands-on approach to building valve and tube amps--classic and modern--with a minimum of theoryDesign, construction, fault- finding, and testing are all illustrated by step-by-step examples, enabling readers to clearly understand the content and succeed in their own projectsIncludes a complete self-build amplifier project, putting into practice the key techniques introduced throughout the book Read more

  • Great Reference for Those Building or Working on Tube Amplifiers
Morgan Jones is now on the 4th Edition of his book "Valve Amplifiers" and has now written a new book "Building Valve Amplifiers" that goes into more detail on the design and construction of them. As an electronics hobbyist and not a trained engineer, I've found his books to be just right in their balance of theory, math and practical knowledge. I think that a lot of people have been waiting for this book and I will say that it has been worth the wait. It has become an essential reference on my work bench. ... show more

  • Fun!!
This is a fun book to read, I mean its less academic or design centered an more hobbyist/maker oriented. You can learn about the entire process on how to build your own valve amplifiers, from wiring to metalworking, which tools to use, which valves, stages, etc..Im giving it 4 stars because the book features many pictures however they are all in black and white, which makes it difficult to fully appreciate all the details, the kindle version apparently has color pictures. In my opinion you will not learn how to design an amplifier but you will learn how to build them, which is the purpose of the book, however if you want to learn all the ins and outs of valve design, there are other books more suitable for the purpose like the other book by Mr. Jones Valve Amplifiers, Fourth Edition will seem more apropriate, or my personal favorite Radio Designer's Handbook, Fourth Edition . ... show more

  • Fantastic book - for the intended purpose
This book gives great coverage to a much lacking topic - the physical construction and testing of tube amplifiers (or, for that matter, any tube gear). It is the best work I have seen in this area, and is invaluable if you need it or are just interested in tube gear wiring and construction. Tube circuitry is tangential to the information in the book, but it is not the main course here. There are many other books available that discuss tube amplifier circuits. There are few if any others that provide proper coverage of mechanical construction. ... show more
