  • Does what I need
Very simply, this works like a charm. It's not hard to figure out how to use it, or change styles, sizes etc. The printed labels are clear. Printing time is pretty quick. And it doesn't take up a lot of space. So if you like organizing your 'stuff' and want to label things as well, this is a nice item at a reasonable price. Beware though, if you're looking for really large, wide labels this model is probably not the one you need. So just pay attention to the description and the specs. ... show more

  • Lasted me 5 years before batteries leaked! I am buying exact same as my replacement
I LOVED this label maker... As a mom of 4 - 11, 10, 8, and 4 - I have needed this so often and it has come through.. there are cool fonts and styles you can pick, it’s so easy to use, the refill label tape is so cheap on here as well and I’ve never had issues!! It did just now finally die only because the batteries inside died and started corroding. But had it not been for that, I fully believe it would have still been going strong for me. And that’s from 5 full years of HUGE usage... not only am I a mom, but I’m OCD and need to feel prepared and somewhat organized with the chaos of our lives haha so I highly recommend this guy! ... show more

  • Simple and easy to use
Yeah its got alot of extra features butr like anything you dont use every day your going to have to read the instructions to use them. As for it wasting tape. Yeah i can see that. But if you set your margins to the smalles setting and instead of printing one label at a time just print them all at once the only wasted tape is at the begining. Not a HUGE DEAL. As for battery usage. Who cares. It has a 7-9 voly port for a wall plug. For 15 bucks you can get a wall charger and plug it in. If you need it outside of the house than use the batteries. This is my secont P touch. The first one was a pc direct which didnt work at all. This one im completely satisfied with and would recommend it for the basic user who just want to labe files in there filing cabinet or just basic stuff around the house shed or garage. ... show more

  • Does what it's supposed to
I only use this thing occasionally, but it works pretty much as advertised. Make sure you put fresh batteries or it will not power up, or will power up but shut down when it's time to print. The AC adapter is not included. I tried a 9V AC adapter from a clock radio but it would not power up even though the connector appears to fit. If you plan to use it a lot, might as well spring for that piece. The print quality is very good, and it offers all sorts of frills that most people will likely never use. A spell checker would have been a nice option, but as long as you excercise a little caution it's not necessary. As others have pointed out, the unit is extremely wasteful of ribbon. You use about 7-10 letters worth of ribbon that comes out blank between each entry. No big deal if you're typing entire sentences, but not great if you are labeling, say, a series of filing folders. Looking at the design of the unit, I have to conclude that this was engineered into the thing to generate revenue selling ribbons. Needless to say, the business model for the lableler is similar to razors, printers and cell phones. The hardware is practically free but you pay over time through the nose for the consumable. Anyway, you can, with a little planning, print a whole series of labels as a single long string and then just chop them up at your leisure with scissors. ... show more

  • Works like a charm!
We've used this for sometime now to label our boxes and files. It does what you expect it to do so there really isn't much to write about. There is one thing that I can say about the sample labels given to you. I recommend you purchase a brand new roll of labels along with this labeler. What they don't mention is that the one given to you is half / half. It's half white on black then it's black on white. I found out when I was labeling my boxes and half way finished the labels turned to black and man was I surprised. I had to finish what I was doing so now most of my boxes still have white/black and black/white labels. ... show more

  • Great Label Maker!
When my original PT 1290 bit the big one, I wanted to stay with a known product. Great little label maker, easy to use, clear, readable print.

  • Caveat Emptor: Is lamination really worth a considerable price increase to you?
Before purchasing this product, you should be aware that it is designed for laminated tape and ONLY works on laminated tape. The machine itself costs 50% more on Amazon at the time I write this than the non-laminate model, and more importantly the laminate tape costs twice as much as the non-laminate tape. The laminate tape also can't be written on. Moreover, because of concerns about the laminating print head, it is designed to waste an inch of the expensive tape each time you cut the tape. Since the tape costs $12 for the 26-foot tape on Amazon (and a Brother tech support told me it's $15-20 purchased locally, yes, you read that right, almost as much as the machine), that's fifty cents a foot, or about a nickle per inch. So that extra inch costs you a nickle each time, and each label costs you from 15 cents to 30 cents depending on how long it is. (My very first label, which says simply "Test", is almost 3 inches long and therefore costs almost 15 cents, with all settings on default.) I may return it, despite the cumbersome process for returning things online, because I don't have any need for weather-proof labels and am not willing to pay several dollars extra a year for them. Now, if you are willing to always print several labels at a time, and cut the labels apart yourself with scissors, you can avoid this inch wastage by using the continuous mode. Or if you want a blank inch on either side of your label all the time, which is the default, then arguably it isn't wasted. For me this isn't worth the dime that 2 inches of blank space is costing me plus I didn't want it anyway because it may unnecessarily make the label too long to fit on a file folder without cutting it with scissors myself, which is exactly the sort of manual thing that label makers are supposed to get rid of. The second thing you should be aware of is that while the machine is quite powerful, it is not very easy to use. I am not saying the product is badly designed, it's just that it has enough stuff crammed into it that I think will confuse many people (it confuses me slightly, and I have a Ph.D. in a technical field). The design could be a lot worse, but my guess is that for most people the extra options will simply confuse things. So for those of you who just want to label file folders quickly and cheaply, like me, I'd consider Brother Personal Labeler Machine, White (PT90) . Also, it seems the laminate tape models like this one also use 6 batteries, whereas the non-laminate like the one I link to above use only 4. ... show more
