  • Wireless CarPlay
Style: 7 Inch No CD
Works and sounds great for the price. Some reviews say their head unit does not have wireless CarPlay, but the one I received has it and it definitely works. Maybe they received an older model?

  • Amazing for $200!
Style: 7 Inch No CD + Backup Camera
This is a great unit for the price. The camera is comes with isn’t amazing but it’s still a clear enough picture to know what your backing up to. I put this in my 15yo daughter’s car so she could use her phone for music and directions without having it in her hands. I replaced the factory 6.5 and 6x9 speakers too and this thing powers them really well. I was worried I’d have to put a small amp in there but I didn’t. It actually sounds really good. Heads up, it turns the music way down when you shift in neutral. Pretty cool feature for a new driver but that would drive me nuts. Not sure if it’s a setting. I didn’t look since I wanted it to stay on. ... show more

  • DON’T BUY: ITS A PIECE OF JUNK
Style: 7 Inch No CD + Backup Camera
Bought this in November’23. It periodically wouldn’t turn on, power button did nothing. Usually, however, it would come on the next time I started the truck. Today it died completely. It’s in a vehicle that I very rarely drive, so it’s barely been used. I’m not crazy about it anyway because its interface isn’t intuitive at all. It has so many buttons that the letters are so small you can’t see them. Also, there’s no way to brighten the screen, so during the day you can’t see anything at all. It sounded pretty good but not great. It was a very expensive purchase to only last 9 months. DON’T BUY IT!!!! ... show more

  • Three Strikes and You Are Out....
Style: 6.2 Inch w/ Volume Knob
The media could not be loaded. I really wanted this unit to work for adding CarPlay and Bluetooth to an older vehicle. But after purchasing three from two different vendors and returning all of them, I gave up. I am not a car audio professional, but I am an electronics engineer and have been toying with car and home audio most of the past 30 years. First let’s start with the pros: Nice quality screen, easy, ergonomic functionality, and intuitive to use. Physical volume knob (hard to find) Front and rear camera (optional add-ons, I didn’t evaluate). Wired Apple Carplay works well. Very responsive. I had no issues with it connecting and staying connected. This unit does not support Wireless Apple Carplay. Front USB connection does not offer CarPlay, must use the rear USB dongle and connect a Lightning cable to it and fish out the front of your dash. Not a big deal I have a cable hanging in a car all the time anyway. Bluetooth paired and worked well with my iPhone 10. Screen resolution and touch sensitivity performs well. Plentiful pre-tapped mounting holes in various configurations allowed my existing side brackets to make a perfect fit in my 2000 4Runner. Front bezel fit perfectly in the dash. FM tuning and pre-sets work great. I had no problems with the functionality like other reviews. Has 3-year warranty, and from talking with their support, I don’t think you would have an issue with a warranty claim. They were fast to answer, and really wanted to help. Now the Cons: Built-in 4-channel amplifier is severely underpowered. I think my clock radio in my bedroom has more power than this thing. Boss states on their web site this has a 320W amplifier (80Wx 4 channels). This is total baloney. I opened it up and took a look at the numbers on the amplifier chip: TDA7388 made by STMicroelectronics. Their data sheet shows this as a 4 channel x 26 Watt @ 14.4 V, 1 kHz, 10 % Class AB Amplifier. The distortion (THD) graph shows 10% at 11W (this is why is distorts the sound as you turn the volume up to 50% level). To overcome road noise and actually hear music it needs to be 40% to 50% and then the sound unbearably distorts. I was so disappointed in this. For the price I was willing to get over this and manually wire the RCA pre-amp outputs into a 4-channel 25W/channel external amp (even with this little wattage the sound was like night and day compared to the internal amp). But when the pre-amp outputs were used, there was a constant hissing noise on the outputs. I tried three different units, all had the same problem. Even with nothing connected the noise showed on my o-scope. Boss has US based support, and they seem to stand behind their products, but they could offer no explanation. All they could offer was a RMA replacement on the units. Because I was in the 30-day Amazon return period, I didn’t want to risk a full refund. I don’t know why the unit is 6.3” deep. It is literally hollow inside and the whole thing weights 27 oz. Some of the good reviews on Amazon and Crutchfield blow my mind. These buyers must really have replaced sucky factory units. My Toyota factory unit this was to replace is not “premium” by any measure, but had decent quality sound. Even though the features and operation of this Boss unit were nice, I am buying it to hear it not to watch it. I still can't get over how bad it sounded so I can't give it more than one star. I ended up purchasing a ATOTO A6G2A7PF due to another posted review and could no be happier with it, in fact it blew me away for the price point (and it has wireless CarPlay). ... show more

  • Good Unit, Minor Flaws
Style: 7 Inch No CD
Pros: Apple CarPlay works only over wire, not wirelessly, but works and connects well nonetheless. Bluetooth support is good, but I prefer Apple CarPlay due to better audio quality during calls. Microphone for hands free mode is sensitive and works well. Cons: Backlighting for controls do not illuminate until you cycle the headlights on and off, dimmer function works well once headlights are cycled. Would have benefitted from volume knob. Volume +/- controls work, but without steering controls, they are small and flimsy. LCD touch screen sometimes does not respond at edge of display. Piano black finish attracts finger prints easily. Screen's finish reflects surrounding during daytime (glare). TLDR: Likely the best unit to get CarPlay and a built in amp under $125, but cost cutting is evident. Update 6/21/24: Unit is now 9 months old, sometimes has trouble with Carplay disconnecting randomly while driving despite being wired connection. Sometimes, the car will start and the head unit does not let you enter the carplay menu. Apparently, calling someone over Apple Carplay means that they hear their own voice as an echo every time they speak. This does not happen over bluetooth call audio, but the voice quality is much lower. Over time, other misc. glitches have become more common although they can be solved by cycling the ignition. I have not encountered the issue some people have complained of where the screen turns white rendering the unit unusable. Buyers beware, you are cheaping out by buying this unit, but at $130, for someone just wanting to try out a head unit for the first time this wasn't a bad option. Corners have very obviously been cut though. Update 9/23/24: Despite other reviews saying the "screen stops working after a few months," my unit is still working well. There was a time when the bluetooth menu started spam prompting me (a glitch probably), so I just turned bluetooth completely as I never used it much (audio quality is much worse over bluetooth). Otherwise, I think the value proposition is good, at least when I got it for $130 out the door. Unfortunate that audio distorts above volume 36 of 50, but compromises were made in the built-in amplifier in order to achieve the low entry point I suppose. In hindsight, and now that I value audio quality more, I wish I would have spent maybe 50-60 more for a Pioneer/Kenwood/Sony in order to avoid the distortion. Buyer Beware: although this is advertised as "4x85W," there is no way that it outputs more than 15W RMS. Some reviewers have even opened up the unit to confirm this by inspecting the electronics inside. This makes sense when seeing that Sony units that cost upwards of $500-600 can only achieve 55W RMS. ... show more
