  • Smart home addition by Bosch
Style: BCC100
I was hesitant to buy this with all the poor reviews and one star ratings for it. I really wanted a plug and play upgrade for our failing non smart thermostat. I didn’t have the 5 wire setup but did find my look to the prior box was indeed 5 wires so I only had to attach the thermostat power wire to the furnace head panel and it was set to go. Install took about 20min total and it was on the wall powered up. I did have the exact same issues with the unit getting it to register as most others complained about. I spent about 30-45 minutes attempting to register but it kept saying cannot connect to server. WiFi connection was fine. Eventually I switched to my “guest” network 2.4ghz and it connected and registered no issues. I have no difference between my guest and standard network so not sure what’s up there. I am glad it registered and worked because I would have returned it for a nest at that point if it didn’t register on the guest network. The app also had issues logging in saying incorrect password but eventually let me login and pair with my thermostat. If you don’t use the app it auto logs you out every 5 days and then sometimes says incorrect password again but logs in. The thermostat itself is top quality. Bosch’s quality and performance shine on this product. I am happy it worked out because I know I can trust Bosch with my personal data unlike Google and Amazon. I have not linked this to my Alexa because I have the Bosch app to control it and I set a schedule. Overall 4/5 stars due to frustrations attempting to register and pair this with the app. If it would have been seamless it would be 5/5 stars. I would recommend this to others over a nest. The screen is nice and shows lots of data and is super simple to use. ... show more

  • It was too complicated for me. I had an air-condition person install mine.

I sometimes have to ask Alexa more than once. It's been working just the way a lazy man would want

  • Simple setup, works with Alexa, has lockout option

UPDATE 13-Aug-2021: Well, I have been happy with this purchase until today. I recently started getting intermittent issues with the thermostat not connecting to the network, and now it fails to connect completely. In an attempt to get it connected to the network again, I did a factory reset. However, since it will no longer connect to the network just a couple of feet away with clear line of site, it is now a useless brick. Please note that this thermostat cannot go through initial setup without a network connection, and since it will no longer connect to the network, it cannot be used at all. It seems the 2.4GHz network radio receiver in the thermostat died. Complete failure after only one and half years. Glad I kept the old "dumb" thermostat...it is working fine and I will use it until I decide what to replace it with...definitely not another BCC device. Changed my rating from five stars to two as a result of the premature death of the product, and the inability to do initial setup without a network connection. -- UPDATE 08-May-2020: Received another firmware update, this time to HD Version 4.13.22 (SW Version 1.2.0 is unchanged). The firmware update did not require me to do anything. I wish Bosch had a web page or document somewhere with information about what is new with their BCC50 software (SW) and hardware (HD) updates, but at least everything is working great. -- UPDATE 14-Apr-2020: I have had the thermostat installed for about four months now. Last night the thermostat did an automatic firmware update and I could not connect to it this morning from my phone until I went to the thermostat and did a wifi disconnect then wifi reconnect. That is all I had to do and everything is back to normal. I did not pay attention to what the previous version was, but the new version is "SW Version: 1.2.0" and "HD Version: 4.13.20". I'm unable to find any information about the firmware update, but it is working just fine (with Connected Control app v2.4.0 on my Samsung Galaxy S10e running Android 10) and I don't notice any difference. -- Original review 13-Feb-2020: I have had the BCC50 installed for a month now. Wiring and initial setup was very easy. Integration with Alexa was also very easy and works great. Alexa commands include the ability to ask what the room temperature is, what temperature the thermostat is set to, to set a specific temperature, and to raise or lower the temperature by specific degrees. For the strongest possible signal, I have multiple hard-wired network routers/access points on each floor, and the thermostat is only a couple of feet away from the nearest network access point with direct line of sight, so there are no problems with network connections. The Connected Control app works fine on my phone (Galaxy S10e), but I was annoyed that it is not compatible with my Fire HD 10 tablet (7th generation), so I used BlueStacks on my home server/cloud system to install the Connected Control app on the server, then installed remote access software (VNC) on my tablet, and now I can access the Connected Control app from my tablet just fine. You do not need to be on your home network to make changes to the thermostat...you can access it from anywhere you have internet access. The thermostat allows you to set minimum run times and minimum off times (to prevent short cycles which are not good for the compressor). Schedule setup was simple and for the regular (Home) schedule, I used eight time slots to set specific temperature targets throughout the day. My house always has people at home, so I don't want or need a "learning" thermostat... I prefer to tell it what temperature I want and when, and it does that great. I find the temperature reading is more accurate than my old thermostat. I am very happy with the BCC50 so far, but my favorite feature doesn't get much attention... the option to lockout changes to the thermostat! There are others in the house that used to raise/lower the temperature while I was sleeping or not home, or just set it to constant on, but now I just lock the thermostat...anyone can see the current temperature and target, but cannot make any changes. I love this feature! ... show more

  • BCC50 Thermostat does not like complicated wifi passwords
Style: BCC50
Using this thermostat in a community building which has different groups using the building, so we needed better control of the thermostat to quit wasting so much energy. I just couldn't get it to connect to the wifi, and it wouldn't tell me what the problem was. I tried many things because others ha suggested that it couldn't be too far from the router. But my problem was that the relatively complicated password (with special characters) that came with our DSL modem/router was too complicated for the thermostat to handle. I changed the password on the 2.4GHz band and it finally connected just fine. Don't bother trying Bosch Technical Support. I called, described the problem I was having, and said something to the effect that I didn't think my phone was trying to use the 5 gig band. Tech support person said, "Oh, your internet only has 5 Gigs - You need better internet for that. Contact your internet provider for better internet." What a blithering idiot! ... show more
