Style: Smart 12.8V 100AH
The media could not be loaded. I am giving it four stars and will update it after having more time to use and evaluate the battery's performance in my RV. I decided to give CHINSUS a try after watching a few videos. Will Prowse has some good videos with teardown and evaluation of capacity. The Projects in Paradise channel has some good videos showing a great setup. The one thing I could not find was videos related to the "Heating" function. I live in an area where we will have at least a three-month window with temperatures well below freezing, and I will use my Truck Camper in these temps. In the one video I could find that talks about the "heating" function, his tests did not prove this functionality. In my testing, the BMS did protect the battery when the battery's internal temperature dropped below freezing. I will provide some photos and a quick video to demonstrate the BMS blocking the battery and the behavior observed with some smart chargers. The App advertised and available for the 100Ah battery appears different from the 200Ah and 300Ah batteries. "UpNorth Mike" has a video on his youtube channel that shows what the 200Ah Bluetooth App looks like. Reviewing other people's posts shows the 200Ah Bluetooth App, and it is different from the App for the 100Ah battery. I will post screenshots of the 100Ah Bluetooth App so you can see the difference. The 100Ah App has most of the same features. The main window shows the State of Charge as a %, current-voltage, current amperage, rated capacity, the number of cycle times, temperature 1 and 2, and if the BMS is allowing for safe charge or discharge. As you can see in the screenshot, when the battery dropped below freezing (0 Celsius), the BMS turned off the charging capability while the discharge capability remained on. CHINS is using the basic functionality on the iOS App, so it appears as if it is a button you can toggle on and off. This is not the case; you cannot toggle it on and off and bypass the BMS. Interestingly, I have noticed there is always a 1 to 2 degree C temperature variance between the two temp sensors. I am not sure where the two sensors are, and I am not in a position where I can afford to tear one apart and diagnose where they are. I have not monitored closely enough to see if BMS shuts off the charge feature when only one sensor reaches unsafe temperatures or if both sensors are needed to disable the charge functionality. I placed the battery outside overnight to drop temps, and the core temperature on both sensors had dropped below freezing when I checked the following morning. Weather forecasts showed we would be sub-freezing but not go to dangerous levels for lithium. When using different chargers, I observed that many chargers would not enable the heat tape. The manual states that the heating film will automatically activate when the battery receives charging conditions. Under this heating phase, the BMS would not charge the battery until the core battery temperature had risen above 10 C (50 F). With my observations, the BMS turned the charging back on at ~8 C; this is well above the freezing, so I was not concerned, but obviously, it did not behave exactly as described in the manual. I tried multiple chargers, and many would not supply current long enough to activate the heating film, instead immediately responding with either bad or already charged battery status. Most smart battery chargers will run quick diagnostics on the battery to analyze the battery before engaging the charge current. The safety feature of the BMS is faking the charger out, and it will immediately show "bad battery" vs. supplying charge current, as noted in a video I will try and include. These same battery chargers had no issues charging the battery when the BMS was not blocking because of the cold temps. I tried brand new smart chargers (NOCO Genius and a Schumacher Rapid Charger) and even tried an old (25+) year old Sears Charger. The older charger would immediately show the battery as charged, and the analog meter would drop to 0 Amps. I am looking at the Victron Energy Blue Smart IP65 12-Volt 15 amp Battery Charger (Bluetooth) - one of its features advertises: "Blue Smart IP65 Charger will attempt to recharge a deeply-discharged battery by force-feeding it with a low current. Normal charging will then be resumed as soon as there is sufficient voltage across the battery terminals." I understand that the heat tape needs five amps, so I am still researching what Victron's low current force-feeding feature provides. I should note that the battery charger in the Lance Camper kicks the heat film with no problem. I am still evaluating what happens with a solar setup. I have an older and a newer BlueSky charge controller that I am still evaluating. I reached out to CHINS with a question about the heat film, and they were quick to respond. Their response: "Many manufacturers of lithium battery chargers first test the voltage of the battery. If the tested voltage data is lower than the parameters they set, these chargers will not charge the LiFePO4 Battery. Our 14.6V 10A lithium battery charger, it includes 0V charging function, it can activate the BMS of any lithium battery, and can also charge all 12.8V lithium batteries." Their response seems to align with what I have been seeing with my testing. The charger you use must have the 0V charging function to supply enough current to activate the heat film. I will look to post back when I have run some more tests and evaluate the battery's functionality through normal RV usage. From an RVers standpoint, I am very pleased with what I have observed so far. Using the App to monitor the battery and see the State of Charge as a percentage will be fantastic. No more guessing your batteries state with the traditional Red, Yellow, and Green indicator lights or evaluating based on current voltage as the voltage readings on a traditional lead-acid can fluctuate greatly while under load. While there are some great features on the App, it lacks a few areas. The 100Ah App does not show anything related to the heating functionality. The only indication it shows is that BMS has disabled charging. One full screen shows "Protection Status," there are numerous data points, but the indicators and datapoints only use Acronyms (SOCC, OTC, UTC, COV, FC, CHG, and 19 others). If you are not knowledgeable about what they all mean, assessing what is being displayed could be challenging. As initially noted, my overall initial impressions are favorable. CHINSUS was quick to respond to questions that I have had, and the battery appears to be performing as designed. The price point is excellent when comparing options. As you can see in the picture where it is mounted in my camper, the previous owner had a lead-acid battery leak, which is very evident from the acid stains down the side of the camper. I will no longer have to climb up to check the battery water levels and worry about acid issues, as lithium does not have these issues. Less weight, less maintenance, no gassing, and hopeful for 2000+ cycles so that it will last 5+ times longer than a lead-acid with much less hassle. The App provides information that will be helpful. I am going with four stars because I have not had enough time to prove things out, but I will update my post as I have the chance to observe the battery under additional scenarios within my RV. ... show more

  • CHINS 100Ah LiFePO4 battery exceeds my expectations
Style: Smart 12.8V 100AH
First, my use case: I am using the 100Ah "smart" version of this battery to power 12V DC and 120V AC systems for my overland trailer. I usually charge the battery using a 120W solar panel, but also can plug into shore power for rapid charging. Other background: I'm an electrical engineer and I researched *a lot* of batteries before choosing this one. This battery had all the features I wanted at a very competitive price point, including a robust BMS, built-in bluetooth, app-based SOC monitoring, and a self-heating function for cold-weather use. I seriously considered similar batteries from Renogy and Battle Born, but those options were much more expensive and didn't (at the time) have all the same features. How the battery has performed: This battery punches above its weight. I'm currently powering a 2,000W Renogy inverter with just one 100Ah CHINS battery. In theory, I shouldn't be doing that, but I wanted to really put the battery to the test before investing in a second one (the system I've built has three bays for a total of 300Ah of capacity). I've pulled 70A+ peak and 50A+ sustained current from the battery to run power tools off my trailer. This has expanded its utility from just camping and fun to actually working as a solar-charged power station for small projects around my property. I've run circular saws, table saws, and shop vacs all day long with the SOC barely dipping below 85%. This is partly because the battery and inverter are very efficient, but also because I position the trailer to maximize solar efficiency when I'm working on a project. This past weekend was my first chance to try out the battery while camping at a State Park in a heavily shaded campsite with no electrical hook-up. I ran a 60W electric cooler ("car refrigerator") continuously for four days. Daytime temperatures were in the 80s, evenings in the 40s and 50s. Two families (seven people) charged cell phones/tablets/etc. regularly over the course of the weekend. With no solar input, the battery still never dipped below 60% SOC and actually charged on the way home back up to 70%+ while still running the cooler. I'm pretty sure I could stretch my trailer to run as-is for a week of boondocking (with solar input) on just one battery. I plan to add a second CHINS battery this summer and possibly a third. The third battery will make my rig a backup power option for home power outages. Finally, on top of making a great product CHINS sent me a FREE (no strings attached, read the Q&A section on Amazon to learn more, if still available) 10A DC charger, which I plugged in for the first time this morning, just to try it out. The unit they sent is basic, but supposedly designed to work with their "smart" batteries. Connecting it to the battery, it immediately put out 10A as expected (the battery was at ~90% SOC) and brought the battery to 100% SOC in just over an hour. CHINS has exceeded my expectations in every way. ***10/5/22 UPDATE*** I went for it and expanded my overland battery system from one CHINS battery to three over the summer. I finally finished connecting the third battery in parallel last month (see review photo). I added batteries one at a time, working with CHINS to make sure the batteries I got were running the same generation of BMS/app, since the tech inside these is constantly evolving. CHINS was extremely responsive and helpful throughout the process. Each time I added a battery, I used the following steps: 1. Disconnect the solar array 2. Disconnect the inverter 3. Top up/charge the existing bank using my CHINS 10A DC charger 4. Top up/charge the new battery using my CHINS 10A DC charger 5. Check battery voltages to make sure they are within a couple of tenths of a volt of each other 6. Connect the batteries in parallel, using heavy-duty 1/0 AWG gauge cables 7. Reconnect the inverter 8. Reconnect the solar array The batteries work flawlessly together. It took a few cycles of partial discharge and recharge for them to fully sync up. After about a month of use, the charge level across the batteries stabilized and has remained uniform since. Before connecting my batteries into a single bank, I also tested one of them as a replacement for the trolling motor battery on my boat. I have a 12V DC trolling motor that pulls about 20A of current at the top speed setting. The CHINS battery ran the trolling motor like a champ all day long. I continue to be impressed with these batteries. ... show more
