I thought for a minute that putting soil in would even it out but the soil would not need to go all the way to the rim and so would never be aesthetically straight. The plastic used for this planter is thin and brittle and too rigid for something that will tolerate minor expansion. Mine arrived cracked, but I am unable to return it because it requires the box it was shipped in, which I had thrown away already.

This box is very large and deep. The base is very sturdy. You can plant up to 5 small or 2 larger plants. I didn't like that the sides were flimsy thin and it expanded when filled with the soil. I think that the sides will crack when the winter snow comes because it will freeze and expand the soil. A heavier gauge plastic would make the walls much better and safer. ... show more
