  • Great camera for studio.
I really like this camera a lot. Although it lacks some features it does a good job when used for what it was intended. It would be a great idea for the manufacturer to create a connector to allow the user to attach a 12V / 5A battery pack to the DC power input. As of now, if you want to use it outdoors you will need to lug a lot of heavy equipment around (extension cords and possibly generators). I know BMD makes other cameras that could be used instead, but this means users who can only afford one camera will choose the other camera instead of this one. Although it is intended as a live broadcast camera it is actually capable of recording. The official way to achieve this is to use a USB C SSD, and this works well except that it can only record in BRAW format and for that you will need to download BMD DaVinci Resolve or the BMD RAW Player (the latter works fine in Linux, however the former is difficult to get working in most Linux distros and will usually require some tweaking, plus it is *extremely* difficult to uninstall completely. The exception is RHL which it was designed for). To record and convert the RAW output I needed to download the BMD RAW Player and then use a screen capture utility such as OSB to capture the output and convert it. Yes in theory you could simply connect directly to OSB and bypass SSD recording completely, but this will only suit you if you are always recording close to where your computer is located or you only use a portable computer with the appropriate inputs for HDMI. You can also use it in combination with BMD Video Assist to record to SSD card in a different format if you want. Since I can't afford that product yet, I used a cheap capture card for the same purpose (although when I am able I will be buying the proper Video Assist product because I think that will give optimal results, plus I will so be buying the BMPC so I can get around some of the recording limitations of this camera). This camera is very simple to use while still having plenty of advanced features to meet the needs of professional users. It only comes with support for 12 languages (my own not included). To get the best of the camera's audio abilities, you will need to use an external microphone. The built in ones might possibly meet your needs in a quiet environment at close range or if you have the voice of a radio announcer. I recommend using external microphone *and* audio recorder (a phone will do fine for recording) even if you are capturing (not streaming) with OSB because you will get a more pure sound quality this way. If you just go with native OSB and your sound card, the result will have interference from the computer (in my experience, anyway). The camera works quite well in low light conditions but won't work in "no light" conditions. I like that the camera has 2 x USB C outputs which are intended for recording in BRAW as previously described. It's important to be aware that SSDs are easily bricked so you should always transfer and back up your footage as soon as possible. One of my SSDs was bricked while connected to the camera and could not be restored in any way, including formatting with GParted, so always be extra careful about this. It does not seem to be an issue with the camera (though it could be, since the camera will only work with ExFAT partitions which may lead to bricking if the camera is interrupted during a write process) but an issue with the SSD itself is the more likely cause. I don't think you need to buy any special brand of SSD to use with this camera, it should work with just about anything. How to support your SSD while it is connected to the camera? The simple solution for me was to use a tripod with a simple phone holder attached, which I put near the tripod that was holding the camera (the SSD is the same approximate size as a phone). The SSDs never come with long USB cables, so that is why the tripod solution was necessary, plus it is tidier and safer than having a long USB cable extending from the camera. The large screen and the handles on either side are great. Keep in mind that if you adjust the brightness or contrast of the LCD then this will have no impact on what is sent out from the camera (these adjustments are just for the camera operator to control what is displayed on the LCD) which is the main reason for the output being recorded in BRAW so you can manually fine tune the output. To do this with live output, you will need some sort of controller that allows you to adjust the picture in real time. The only thing I had been less than satisfied with is there is no cage available for this camera which dramatically reduces the ability to accessorize it. The tripod connector comes with the capacity to support 2 x 15mm rods but these are not included with the camera. If you are buying your own, I recommend "cheese rods" (search Amazon for Niceyrig 7.7 inch 15mm cheese rod) that have holes to allow you to attach more accessories. ... show more

  • monitor flickering
It's been over a year since I purchased it, and I've only used it a few times. However, the monitor on camera continuesly is flickering during use. It's really difficult to use. The warranty is only one year, so I'm really at a loss as to how to fix it.

  • Blackmagic lied on their website
I was very excited to finally get a camera with an SDI slot that wasn't going to cost thousands of dollars. However, when I got the camera, it turned out that there was no SDI slot on here and that all the images and description on the website was for the Pro and not the Plus. Blackmagic gives the two cameras the same page on their website then try to pass it off as both. Had to refund to get the more expensive pro just to get that SDI functionality. ... show more
