You *HAVE* to follow the directions and rinse it out a few times a day. Personally, I rinse it out at least 6 times a day (usually more). Even with frequent rinsing, you'll find that the water is bit brown and stinky for the first day or two. Keep at it and don't despair. It goes away as the sprouts grow. The product is FAR superior to the other sprouting methods I've used before. The Handy Pantry Seed Sprouting Kit (ASIN B0015ZNN9Y) is great but THIS sprouter forces the mung bean sprouts to grow tall and straight (I guess they are seeking the light thru the lid). Are they as big as store bought? No. Commercial production of sprouts use equipment and methods unavailable to the home grower. Are they bigger and better than the jar or tray method? By far! FWIW, the container I received was a translucent green color, not transparent green as shown in the product photo. Doesn't affect anything, just pointing it out. ... show more

Really loving this automatic sprout maker! Just soak your beans and the next day put them in here with some water... Walk away for only a day or two.. . already sprouted! No need to rinse and watch, it's all automated (for your climate) and makes it all so simple and easy!

    • Wheat grass grew great but...

This worked great for the wheatgrass seeds I germinated, however I wish the layers were actually separated, all 3 layers grew together which was frustrating. Next time I'll try and grow 1 layer per day instead of all 3 at once and see if that helps. Overall though the product works great and was very easy to use. I held off on buying this for a long time. The machine takes up a lot of space on the counter and it only has one function. But every time I tried (unsuccessfully) to sprout mung beans using other methods, I longed to get one of these machines. So I splurged for Christmas, and my very first try, I LOVE IT! The directions are a little confusing but I was able to figure it out by watching some videos on YouTube. When I noticed how fast the beans were sprouting after just a few hours, I think I started checking it too much, but it was kind of exciting! My house is pretty cold right now, but lifting the lid off of the machine, you can feel the warm humid air come out - it's like a tropical rain forest inside! There's a video on YouTube that shows how giant bean sprouts are grown in Japan in hot springs, and that is what it reminds me of - only it's conveniently on my kitchen counter! ... show more

    • Useless, stick to slanted jars

This product of an instance where automation and electronic settings produce an inferior process to simply rinsing a jar with a mesh lid and holding it upside down. You’ll get a large % of seeds simply not germinating and going to waste compared to the jar method. The ones that do germinate do so very unevenly from tray to tray. And when you’re done with the batch and it’s time to clean the trays, little seeds both sprouted and not will be stuck in the little gaps of the trays and it’s such a pain to pull them out that it obviates any gains in time and convenience form the jar method — real or imagined. Yes I changed the water religiously on this thing so that’s not why the seeds didn’t sprout so well. And I tried various ones: broccoli, king bean, alfalfa. It’s clunky, hogs up valuable counter space, doesn’t work well at all, and is a pain to clean. My guess is whoever gave it high stars never tried the simple no nonsense way of sprouting seeds in jars. Honestly this product is a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. ... show more

This works very well for me if I do a few things differently. I presoak my beans in a quart jar with a TBS or 2 of hydrogen peroxide for a day, rinsing after 12 hours (and adding more H2O2). When I add or change water to the sprouter, I also add more H2O2. I have NEVER been able to sprout garbanzo beans before but they worked perfectly this time, with no funky odors, no rotting beans ruining the batch etc. I DO take out broken beans at each stage. I do this before I soak them and as I put them into the trays. This way those won't rot and ruin the batch. If you notice in the photos, I cut up an almond butter container to space the trays out. This makes it easier to get them in and out and also gives the sprouts more room to grow. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. At first it was perfect. After awhile, I noticed some black stuff on the whirling mechanism. I tried to get the black stuff out with a toothpick but ended up unscrewing the screws. YUCK!!! A ton of black stuff!!! I’ve cleaned the two parts and left Clorox cleanup to sit on it for a few minutes to clean them completely. Keep an eye on the whirler, and unscrew it periodically to clean. ... show more

I grow tons of sprouts with this inexpensive electronic sprouter!!! I use only 1 tray in my sprouter because harvests are more consistent with uniform growth. Through trial and error I was able to fine tune my protocol to avoid issues like mould. I also modified the exterior of the bowl by applying electric tape on the outside to prevent light intrusion permanently.........no more struggling with that damn shower cap thingy!!! I also have a plant lamp which I use for 2 days prior to harvest and I use distilled water exclusively during the entire growth cycle along with a post-harvest ozone bath.........this dramatically reduces mould issues. ... show more
