This is my first HAM radio and it’s awesome! I’ve used it in emergency drills, to connect to simplex nets, to connect to repeaters and it’s worked great! Excellent range and features. Someone gave me a more expensive radio from another brand and this one is much more user friendly and sounds better. Great radio. Used for communicating during hunting trips. You can still communicate with each other after going deep into the woods. If you know how to program it, you can program many channels from your location into it. Best radio for a good price.

Wattage is a bit below what is advertised, The antennas they provide work. You can unlock it pretty easy and turn it into a tri band radio instead of the duel band it is sold as. ( the band you can unlock is between the 2 it offers ). the menus are kinda clunky, but using CHIRP ( free to download ) and the included ( with the set i bought anyway ) programing cable, its much easier to deal with most of what you need the menu for. This radio can also work as a scanner, it will search top to bottom on each band. ( but not all bands at once, you have to select the band you want. ) OR, You can punch in specific frequencies, and just scan them. SO scan the band to find active freqs, then enter them in manually as channels, for much faster scanning of hot channels and removing the digital, and overly noise ones that will show up when scanning in freq mode. Also, when scanning in channel mode, you can scan channels across all 3 bands. I have no problems working repeaters, and listening to the local non digital fire, ambulance, sheriff and police bands as well as several other local business. Just keep in mind, You need a GRMS license (35 bucks, no test from the fcc )to legally talk on 1 band, some channels on that same band can be talked on without a license ( but at lower power ), and the other 2 require a ham license to legally transmit on, But this radio is not considered a "legal" radio by the fcc to transmit on for any band as it does not meet fcc standards. ( if you care about that ) BUT, You can listen on any band, with any equipment, without a license. Aside from the fact that it is illegal to talk on this radio in the USA in any situation but extreme emergency, I would buy another if mine stops working. ... show more

I purchased this radio full-well knowing it would likely be a Chinese, low quality radio. Nevertheless, I figured I would give it a try. I was immensely impressed that it was easy to program with CHIRP and the quality was way better than I thought it would be. The battery live with the small battery is amazing and the larger battery is out of this world. While the radio will not do all of the things some of the more higher-end models will, for the price point it definitely holds it own and can be in the running for the comparison game. If you are looking for an inexpensive radio that will do VHF/UHF (and even allow for programming for GMRS right out of the box) this is the purchase to make. In addition, the accessory pack and additions are everything one needs to get started. Highly recommended for sure. ... show more

Radio came timely and included everything in item description. The upgraded whip antenna included is a huge upgrade from the stock baofeng rubber duck antenna. Still not as good as a Nagoya but close. The UV-5R is much smaller than I expected. Very easy to stow in your gear. Easy to program with Chirp, programming cable is not included however. If you get one don’t buy a cheap cable as many do not work. The decent ones are somewhat expensive at around $20, I highly recommend getting one for easier programming. The tri-color screen is a joy to use. By default it’s purple on standby, blue when receiving, red when transmitting. And you can change all this and more in the settings. I recommend you keep the manual handy and go through each of the settings to familiarize yourself with what the radio is capable of. It is a good idea to do some research on the radio hobby in general so you know what is legal and what isn't. This radio is technically not legal to transmit on many of the frequencies it is capable of, i.e. FRS and GMRS bands. You need an Amateur HAM license from the FCC to transmit on the HAM frequencies, but listening is OK until you decide if that's something you want. To get full use out of this radio you will want to program your own channels, it only comes with a few out of the box. There are many YouTube tutorials covering how to get the most out of it. So make sure to do your research! If you want a cheap but highly functional radio this is the only way to go! This radio is a classic. ... show more
