Description

This create ambiance with a perfect balance of warmth and style with the aspen collection. Mahogany solid and cherry veneer are warmed with a rustic cherry finish while recessed door panels, a profiled edge top and bold molding detail draw the eye deeper in. Storage function can be found in the four storage drawers and a storage cabinet with one adjustable shelf but what makes this island really unique is the hidden sliding mechanism connected to the back two posts. The mechanism provides easy mobility and independent movement of the two posts for expansion of the breakfast bar. Either with the breakfast bar closed or in use, this piece has a polished look by being consistently styled on both the approach and working sides. With the breakfast bar extended, the top surface depth expands from 26-3/4-inch to 39-inch. Measures 48-inch width by 26-3/4-inch depth by 36-inch height.

  • Couldn't Be Happier!
DELIVERY First, a big shout out to Amazon Prime: I ordered this item on Wednesday evening (at 6:00 P.M. or so), and it arrived Thursday at 11:00 A.M.! That may just be because of my location, but WOW! WEIGHT AND CONDITION I am an average-sized woman, and my 11 year-old son and I were able to lift the boxes in from the garage, where UPS had brought them (kudos to my son, BTW: one box was 70 pounds). There was minimal denting to the boxes, and pieces were VERY well packed with styrofoam edging (one box even had particleboard edging to support the box structure [the particleboard was not part of the structure of the island]), so we only had a very small nick on one piece (which isn't even visible when the cabinet is closed). DIRECTIONS The directions are very clear (except that you should know when it says to "insert" the cam screws, it means to go ahead and screw them in; I thought it meant just to start them until a later step). (I started them with a handheld screwdriver, and used my drill to finish them. I wouldn't suggest starting with a drill, as the screws can go off-course, and split the wood.) A few of my screws were flat heads when it said round, and it said to use 1 1/4" screws (which weren't part of the hardware) in the last step of the drawers, but there were plenty of 1" screws (used in the other step for the drawers), so I just used those. ASSEMBLY I am a meticulous/careful worker, so it may have taken me longer than most (and I took breaks for dinner, etc.), but I had the entire thing together in five hours, and again, it was EASY to assemble; directions were very clear (I have assembled furniture before, but still think a first-timer could make sense of things). The most difficult part was the cabinet door: I had to reposition the catch so it lined up properly (if you have to do this, I advise saving frustration by just drilling new pilot holes). I did need my husband to help me lift the countertop onto the base at the end, but was able to do everything else myself. STORAGE SPACE and USE IDEAS I wondered about this when looking online, so thought I would share: The cabinet door storage space is 19" D x18"W x 20.5"H with an adjustable shelf. Drawers are 17" D x 14"W. Top two drawers are 2.5" H; lower two drawers are 7.5" H. These are all inside measurements. I haven't put anything in it yet, but purchased the island because I moved into a much smaller kitchen (storage and countertop-wise) than I had had at my previous home. This will go a long way toward storing my everyday items that were the basement! To share our idea: since we have a dining room, we put this in the eat-in area of our kitchen (which is large), and it makes the kitchen feel larger--expands the prep area out into the eat-in area. Also, my kiddos will be able to have breakfast in the kitchen, and have a spot for homework. We did consider adding a full granite top, expanding the sides by 12" so that we have more spots for stools, but it's so beautiful the way it is, I think we'll hold off on spending the extra money for now! APPEARANCE and STRUCTURE The wood is beautiful! The cherry in my kitchen is slightly more orange (or lighter red), but this does have a beautiful reddish tone, and since it's not right next to my other cabinets, I don't think anyone will ever notice it's not an exact match. It is made of sturdy wood--no particleboard, even in the drawers (which roll in and out beautifully). It is a solid piece of furniture... and one more thing: one reason we did not have an island installed is because we didn't want to mar our hardwood floors. The stationary part of this island has rubber (maybe plastic) "bumpers" on the feet. The pull-out legs (which support the leaf) are on wheels, so our floor is pretty safe (though I would still lift it if you need to move it). The toe kick around the bottom still gives it the appearance of built-in. With the leaf up, it is an impressive island space. I finally have room to spread out and make a pie!!! Other reviews have mentioned that the surface will scratch easily, and we all know how wood and water mix, so I may invest in a glass top (also, I don't really want to roll out my pie crust onto the wood). Other than that, it is perfect the way it is! So glad we purchased it. ... show more

  • Solid Island
This island is great barring a couple minor chips from shipping and the cam locks it comes with. Took a several hours to build but once it was together it looks great. The reviews were correct in saying the cam locks were trash. 80% of them broke in their hole when tightening them. Cam locks should be tightened 180 degrees to ‘lock’ them in place. I ended up going to 2 different home improvement stores and buying them out of cam locks (they only sell them in packs of 4 for around $5 each. I would recommend ordering this island and also adding a multi pack of cam locks to your cart. I added a few “improvements” to our island…wiring an outlet to one side. I also secured and screwed it to the floor so it wouldn’t budge to try and make it look ‘built in.’ I also took the feet or screw levelers and wheels off the bottom so it would sit right on the floor. We also put different pulls/hardware on it. We are thinking about painting the base to match our existing cabinets. (Hints the white outlet instead of black outlet I chose) Also, we may replace the counter top with stone down the line. It seems like the counter top could be easily scratched. You could keep this island the smaller size without the extension flipped up and completely remove the folding top piece or replace the top with stone and use the extending legs to support the full size. Overall, this island if extremely versatile. The cam locks were the most frustrating part but once it was together, it’s very solid, and you can manipulate it any way you’d like. ... show more

  • Beautiful and sturdy
First the bad: The first one of these I ordered arrived damaged; one of the three boxes had a huge gash in it that went through the styrofoam packing and into what I now realize was the back of the island (I didn't open the boxes once it was clear I'd need to return them). It was returned and a new one arrived several days later. Assembly is not hard, but it is time consuming, and I suggest tackling it early and not after a long day of moving and other furniture assembly (ahem). At least five of the cam locks snapped just from hand-tightening; do NOT use an electric tool! Every other piece of hardware came with one extra; there were about 15 cam locks left over after I finished, even when replacing ones that broke. It seems the company knows they'll fail, maybe they should considering using higher-quality hardware. Now the good: This island is beautiful. It may be engineered wood (that's what is listed on the materials), but it has a good hardwood veneer if so. Once assembled it is solid; the legs for the extension are pre-assembled and on wheels so they slide out smoothly and provide excellent support for the breakfast bar when raised, rather than just a flimsy support under the center. The breakfast bar also lies flush with and at the same height as the rest of the island when raised. What took longest to put together was the drawers; the bottoms bent a little after removing them from the packaging (likely due to change in temperature/humidity) and wrestling them flat so they'd slide into the grooves on the sides and back of the drawers once assembled was a challenge. Follow the instructions closely, especially as to when to fully tighten screws and only using electric screwdrivers on reduced power, and you'll be fine. If you want barstools, order 24" ones; the 29" stools I already had are too high to sit comfortably at the breakfast bar, although as seen in the pictures they fit under the extension nicely. ... show more
