  • Satisfied with the Anytone 5555n
Style: AT-5555N
I decided to go with the quad5n instead of the quad5nii. Mainly because of the price point. When it first arrived before opening the package it was rattling inside the box which caused some concerns. I carefully open the box examined the radio and noticed some screws in the box and something inside the radio was loose. I opened the radio and discovered that the speaker was not screwd in. So I screwed the speaker back into place and turned on the radio; all worked fine. Tested the frequencies that came as the standard 10 meters. I decided to mode the radio to open up the bands to include 11 meters. It took literally seconds!! Did a quick solder bridge to OP1 on the board. Before doing this, I looked up tips on how to do a clean solder on YouTube and bought a cheap solder kit on Amazon. It now works on 11 meters and all bands from A through J. Made my first contact with Jamaica on 27.5150 LSB. So far good report. Not too much propagation happening right now but did hear the super bowl channel so there's some activity happening on the bands. Im taking my technicians license next month so will be ready to talk on 10 meters very soon. I'm very satisfied with this purchase. I would highly recommend this radio if you're on a budget like me. ... show more

  • So far, so good.
Style: AT-5555N
So far so good. I have the radio and have powered it up. I am having some issues with a high SWR on my antenna so I have not really had a chance to transmit where folks can respond to my audio. I need a little time to get the antenna tuned properly and then try to make some QRP contacts on 10M. Also want to hook up a SignaLink and see if I can send a receive in any digital modes. I will update with a report when I get it all working. On the radio so far: the quality seems good and the display is very readable. I have not figured out how to program the radio yet, or if I can set the BAND frequency spreads. I'd like to set up the bands to replicate the ARRL band plans (CW, Phone, FM, Repeaters, etc.). I am taking one star off for the poor manual very little information. I needs a better manual for sure. I will figure it out... If I can do what I set out to do on 10M, for the price of the radio, I will be very happy. I may mod it so I can listen to the CB on 11m. A lot of funny stuff goes on there. It may be entertaining. update 12/21/14 I did fix the SWR issue with my antenna and have it tuned well for 10M now. Made a few DX contacts to South America and the Caribbean. Since there is virtually no documentation on this radio (that came with it or on the Web), I had to take apart the mic to bug out the wiring. Once I had that figured out, I wired up my Signalink and have been using CW and PSK31 on the low end of 10M. There are many other digital modes I can see running around 28.120 MHZ. I will have to try them also. The AT-5555N actually works quite well. I did notice that the Radio does allow repeater offsets, but the tone generator is not installed on these radios. I can't see using a repeater much anyhow. They are up at the top end of the band and I am into the 2:1 to 2.7:1 SWR range up there.. plus.. I never hear anything going on up there. All the DX is on the lower end for sure. For $230, this is a nice radio and will get you into the 10M HF world inexpensively. As I understand it, we are going into a peak period where the propagation and skip will be good. It is the time to have 10M. I am using this with a Proton PT-99 antenna. I did have to physically cut the tip 6 inches to get the SWR good on 10M. The PT-99 is essentially an CB antenna (11M) which can be tuned via cutting off about 6 inches. The tuning rings just don't do the job to swing it that far. ... show more

  • Good value for money
Style: AT-5555N
I have been using my anytone 5555n for nearly a year. Its easy to use and I have been able to get qso's on on the upper sideband in chile,Brazil,Australia, and Panama, i use a 1/2 wave sirus antenna on a 30 ft pole, the only thing I wish it had is a cw port that's all that's missing for my use.

  • This is a good 10 meter radio and I found some things to ...
Style: AT-5555N
This is a good 10 meter radio and I found some things to like and some things I don't like about it. First, this radio is BIG. This will not work on my current automobile. Comparing it to the Uniden HR2600 I found that it was about 1 1/2in longer and about 1/2in wider but it feels bigger than that. The other negative is that the microphone feels cheap. OK, now that the negatives are out of the way, I find that the audio is much more pleasant to listen to than my HR2600. The audio is cleaner and SSB sounds more like the higher end HF radios. I think this is the perfect rig for a ham who can't afford to spend $500 or more on a better rig or someone who just wants a 10 meter only radio for a reasonable amount of money. This radio is sold as a 10 meter rig but also has capabilities on 11 meters where I have privileges on some frequencies on the MARS. However, I would only use it there as back up since I don't trust it for MARS yet. Frequency stability seems good and I have not yet encountered drift after a warm up period. I think this rig is excellent for a base station because It has a wonderful display. It's large and easy to see the operating setup of the radio at a glance. So far, this radio handles the busy 10 meter band without too much trouble; again, better than my HR2600. This radio is basically a CB radio sold as a 10 meter ham radio because it includes roger beeps and burps. :) I do recommend it to any licensed ham who wants to try 10 meters before the end of the cycle.. Have fun! ... show more
