  • Great for curious young scientists
I originally purchased a microscope that was 3 times the cost of this one, living under the notion of "you get what you pay for". Let's just say my child was thoroughly unimpressed at the complexity, and pouted the rest of the day. One important thing I failed to consider was how many OPAQUE objects an 8 year old would want to view close up. Here's the issue: when you place an item (such as a penny) under a microscope that is only lit from below, the light can't pass through. So you see black. Try explaining that concept to an over excited child who just wants to find random objects and see what they look like! So, I immediately got online to find a microscope that had MULTIPLE lighting sources. Also, although it might seem more beneficial to an adult to have the "binocular style" eyepiece, try and recall the last time you assisted a youngster in focusing actual binoculars. I don't know the technical reason for it, but basically it is a pain in the butt, so go with the single eyepiece for now, unless you have a child with independent binocular experience. Last thing, this bundle comes with a couple prepared slides. Your child (or yourself) will have so much fun seeing what is on the slides, that you will realize you want to see more. After swabbing your ear, spitting, and cutting locks of hair to place on the blank slides, you will decide that before someone goes to the extreme of performing a biopsy on the goldfish, you should just order additional slides on Amazon! Save time, do that now... (the book that comes with is very fact-filled and not at all a corny cheapy) ... show more

  • Either false advertising or they sent me the wrong scope
I spent an extra $15 (with fewer accessories) because the cheaper listing had bad reviews stating a number of problems, while the more expensive listing (and less inclusive kit) seemed to have worked out the kinks. The more expensive one states 2018 in the title while the cheaper one states 2017. Well, the scope I received has all the same problems as the cheaper listing. Plus, it is not as advertised. 6 PROBLEMS (top to bottom): 1. The eye piece can just fall off. It's just loosely set in there. It's only a matter of time before my 10 year old carries the scope from one room to another, carefully with the handle, but forgets that the eyepiece falls off. 2. The eyepiece opening doesn't work with a camera adapter unless you hold it at just the right angle. The opening is too big. I specifically read in the Q&A that it would fit but it doesn't. Too big around. 3. The top light isn't aimed very well and isn't very bright. You have to crank the light level all the way up (and then hope your kid remembers to turn it back down when they switch to the bottom light which is crazy bright. 4. You can't have both the top light and bottom light on at the same time. I was looking for one that did that for semi transparent objects and this listing has a photo showing both lights on at the same time. 5. The platform doesn't go down very far so if you plan to let your child collect fun objects to look at, you better think small. Even the tip of my littlest finger was too big. Possibly a kernel of corn would be the largest it could do, but even that would be iffy. 6. The listing shows a color changing dial under the platform, which was one of the features I was interested in since it is featured on several microscopes, eliminating the need for colored dye. Nope, doesn't exist. That about sums it up. Now what am I to do? My son is very excited to have a microscope for his birthday. He is enjoying looking at slides, but I paid extra for something that was supposed to have all these kinks worked out and supposed to have better features. Do I take away his gift and try again? How can I trust that the next one will be any better? Sincerely, one frustrated mom. ... show more

  • Very easy to learn to use
I got the microscope for my 8 yr. old grandson's birthday. It is a very well made scope, not "plasticky" or cheap looking or handling at all. Very easy to learn to use, though the directions that came with it were somewhat lame. However, the book "World of the Microscope" was clear and easy to read. He mastered it all in one afternoon and has been using it almost every day since, fascinated with what he has been able to discover. ... show more

  • Great microscope for kids or beginners!
Santa brought this microscope for our 6 year old this year and it’s a hit! He’s been looking through it all day and loves the prepared slides and had even made a few of his own. The microscope works great, is not too heavy, and is easy to use (especially for the kiddo). We can’t wait to look at more interesting things with this in the days to come! ... show more

  • So cool!
Bought this for my 10 year old for XMas. It is super cool! Really awesome! The only thing it doesn’t come with a case. It does have a nice vinyl cover. He keeps it on his dresser and covered. The accessories we keep in a big zip lock freezer bag. It’s so cool. This was a great thing to get him and our kids love it and I love it. It’s worth buying a book for kids to explain how to use it. ... show more
