The Home Styles 5004-94, Distressed Oak Finish Kitchen Island is a very attractive addition to our kitchen and we really like it very much. It arrived promptly, but had a gouge through one of the 3 boxes that penetrated all of the protective packaging and gouged the drop leaf. Fortunately, the damage was a small gouge to the underneath side of the leaf. We took photos to document the damage and also photographed one corner of the base that was assembled poorly/a little crooked. I contacted Home Styles and they initially rejected my request for both parts to be replaced saying they didn't replace damage caused during shipping; that I would have to send it back to Amazon. I replied for them to forget about the piece damaged in shipping and asked if they would replace the base piece and they replaced it very promptly. It provides a lot of storage as well as a significant and welcomed area of added counter surface. It is made primarily of hardwood (the shelves and panels in between the shelves look to be some kind of composite with veneers). The assembly was pretty easy and pretty well designed, but the cam locks seem to not be of the strongest metal. To help assure a strong and lasting assembly, we added wood glue to the key joints such as the legs. The pre-drilled holes all lined up well with the provided hardware. As some others have reported, we had a little trouble with one of the cabinet doors not closing. I took the hinges off, took them to the garage and placed them in a vise to bend them slightly inward. Both doors now close perfectly. Also as noted by other reviewers, it is much darker than the sales images on Amazon's page. The color is fine. It just isn't what you see is what you get. The only other comment I would make is that the packaging was really substantial and well done, but I wish suppliers such as Home Styles would figure out a way to not use Styrofoam. They use a lot of it which is good for protecting the product in shipment, but it makes a mess, stinks and is an environmental hazard if it breaks down when exposed to sunlight. Placing it all in the trash means it just goes to a landfill, but if they could use corn starch packaging, then it would decompose harmlessly when buried. We would pay a little more for more earth friendly packaging. All in all we are very happy with Home Styles for supporting us after our purchase and we love the island. Kept my eye on this for months and finally got a great price for it during Amazon Prime Day. It replaces a kitchen island I've had for 30 years. Ships in 3 big boxes containing well packed components that are sticker coded to aid identification when assembling. Design look and layout is superbly executed. All materials are top quality and durable - no cheapo pressed fiber board garbage. Instructions are easy to follow and assembly is simple with minimal tools necessary - best to get help fitting the heavy top and leg pillars, though. Especially like the beautiful eggshell finish and mahogany countertop with its drop leaf option for food layout during holiday gathering. Sturdy pins for adjusting inside & outside shelves make for versatile storage choices when setting up this island to contain your kitchenware & handy cooking items. Drawers are ample and deep for your utensils & trays and have full length, slide-out trollys. I added a separately bought, matching towel rack to one end for convenience. I'm certain this was only a one-off issue with my particular order, but one of the imbedded lugs in a brace that holds the bolts for the table top twisted out of its housing so I couldn't tighten that particular corner down all the way. Other minor, fixable things were: 1) had to refit and modify one of the door hinges because it was a bit off kilter and wouldn't let the door shut properly; 2) pronounced 3“ paint drip blemish and rough finish texture on the base stand, but not obviously noticeable since it is on the bottom of the stand.; and, 3) drawer glides needed to be adjusted down because the drawer facias bumped the table top when closing. These easily preventable quality control issues means I would give the island shipped to me a 4.5 rating. However, if these small invonveniences didn't exist, this Homestyle American Kitchen Island model definitely rates a 5+ IMO. ... show more
