It did take me a minute to figure out how to turn on the purple light instead of white light but it does kill the mosquitoes. I love the self cleaning function (hold button down for 6 seconds) and I live near a river so the mosquitoes are bad. I like that I can just leave this one outside and don't have to bring it in to charge like my other one. The purple light lasts for hours. We did try to use the brightest white light one night for a bon fire and it only lasted an hour but that is okay because I didn't really buy it to be used as a light. It might have lasted longer but I didn't bring it in and only let it solar charge that day. Overall, I really love that it is solar and I can leave it outside and forget about it while at the same time reducing mosquitoes to a tolerable level. ... show more

My husband loves the self cleaning feature… bugs are swept away into the bottom compartment and then easily dumped. The solar charger works well. Our yard has dappled sunlight and it still charges enough. It works well to attract bugs at night because of the lantern which has different brightnesses. We were pleasantly surprised that the bug”zapping” was silent. It is a good addition to our outside space. Edited… we were very pleased the first few days but the zapper does not work any more. It worked perfectly, but mine didn’t have anything to catch the bugs in so it had to be outside or have something to catch the bugs underneath it. “It truly is a magnet for mosquitoes flies and anything with wings❣️”

    • Handy Portable Bug Zapper for Outdoors

I was looking for a bug zapper that I could keep as a permanent fixture in my backyard. I saw that this one had a self-cleaning function, so I decided to give it a shot. Placement with these things is everything, so finding that perfect spot took some trial and error. But once I did, the zapper went to work. Once zapper mode is activated on the lantern, it turns on and off on its own based on the light sensor (dusk to dawn). It would be nice if there were a way to force it on without having to cover up the sensor, though. Thanks to the trickle charging from its solar panel, I was able to leave it alone for about a week before I felt the need to charge it back to 100%. The zapper does get a little dirty after a while with all the bugs that get stuck to it, but the self-cleaning brush runs on its own every few days to clean it up. If you can't wait that long, you can force clean it by pressing and holding the power button on top until the brush starts moving (about 5 seconds or so). Not impressed. The performance is disappointing. I have charge and I also had in the for more than a day. The only part that lights up is the top. Had not had a victim yet. Battery life is poor. This does not value the money I paid for it. The size and weight are ok.

It has a built in solar panel and a charging cable. Left outdoor to charge under the sun until dawn and just need to charge another hour or two indoor and this bug zapper will be on all night. I can see big and small bugs zapped to death and cling onto the metal grid. Once in awhile, the built in brush will turn itself to get rid of all the dead bugs on the grid the whole way round. This self cleaning function is excellent and the metal grid is spraklingly clean. You just need to remove the bottom lid once in awhile to empty the dead bugs. This isn’t working properly, doesn’t zap or catch bugs. The only thing collecting at the bottom is dirt and debris. The light stays on all the time, isn’t on a timer.
