The wall around the base is actually not metal, but a waterproof vinyl similar to a trampoline material. That’s probably how the manufacturer is able to keep the cost low. And the cost is great for a propane firepit that works, looks good, and is easy to assemble. I bought four of these and they all had good size dents on the top of them gave as gifts but very disappointed in them I should have sent them back but the people I gave them to had already put them together I was very embarrass when I seen them
