  • So much easier for hard cheeses
Style: Restaurant Cheese Grater
I always hate grating cheese because I don’t have much strength in my hands. This is really easy and makes the grating so much quicker and easier. The only improvement I would suggest would be to have a second blade for larger grating as this grates the cheese really fine (like one would want it for Parmesan). ... show more

  • HOW TO KNOW IF AN ITALIAN RESTAURANT HAS GOOD FOOD BEFORE YOU ORDER (and a few other tips about cheese).
Style: Restaurant Cheese Grater
Yes, I like this cheese grater. It works well, it's durable, and it's a good value with the price. Now I want to tell you about Italian restaurants and cheese. Most Italian restaurants have a shaker jar of grated cheese on the table. When you sit down at the table, unscrew the lid of this jar and take some cheese out with a spoon. Then put some between your thumb and your index finger, and squeeze. If the cheese sticks together in a clump, it's good fresh cheese. However, if it if it does not clump together when you squeeze it, it's either old, stale cheese, or it's that tasteless, pre-grated, store bought stuff that contains up to 50% cellulose (wood) which serves as an anti-clumping agent. If this is the case, just get up and leave without ordering. If this is the best the restaurant can do with its grated cheese, it's a good indication that the restaurant does not serve high-quality Italian food. Now, here's some information about which Italian cheese you may want to buy for grating. Most people just refer to all of these Cheese's as Parmesan cheese. There are, in fact, three distinct types of Italian cheese to use for grating. The first, and mildest cheese, is called Romano. Next, is Parmesan cheese. Although many people use the term parmesan to refer to any Italian cheese used for grating, it is actually a specific type of cheese. It's a sharper cheese than the Romano, but not the sharpest Italian cheese. The Italian cheese that has the sharpest flavor, is called Lucatelli. Of course, in order to find this cheese, you'll have to go to an Italian deli that Imports many of its products. If you have a Little Italy in your town, this is where you'll most likely find an Italian deli. In San Diego, where I live, there's an Italian Restaurant and Deli in Little Italy called Filippi's. As I'm sure you already know, a hard cheese can last virtually forever in a refrigerator. It's important though, to wrap it in plastic and not paper. Otherwise the refrigerator will dry it out. I'm only telling you this because most Italian delis will wrap the cheese in paper and not plastic. And, if you keep the cheese in a block and only grate it when you use it, it will stay fresh forever. Because a hard cheese will not go bad in the refrigerator, you don't have to wash your Zyliss grater every time you use it. All you have to do is put your Zyliss grater in a ziplock bag with your cheese and put it in the refrigerator. There's no need to wash it if the cheese on it isn't going to go bad. (Yes Mom, I know I should wash it anyway.) Lastly, here's a tip for how to grate a soft cheese. In descriptions of cheese graters, it will usually say somewhere that it's not possible to great a soft cheese. Not true. If you ever want to grate a soft cheese, all you have to do is freeze it first. If you're using a cheese grater like the Zyliss that has a small compartment to put the cheese into, it's best to cut the cheese into pieces before you freeze it. This is because it's a lot harder to cut it into pieces after it's frozen. Bon appetit. ... show more

  • Only for hard cheeses
Style: Restaurant Cheese Grater
OK, its a good rotary cheese grater. The assembly is simple and straight forward, its comfortable for me to hold in my hand and operate, the hopper for holding the cheese for grating is smooth and feeds the cheese to where it's supposed to go. (You'd be surprised! Some of these rotary "restaurant" cheese graters have a reinforcing brace inside that stops the hard cheeses from feeding down onto the grating wheel!) It seems well built. I'll get back to that in a year or so. Meanwhile: It loses a star for clogging with softer cheeses. The barrel is a rather small diameter, so the longer curls of soft cheese simply get stuck... quickly. The same small diameter makes it hard to dig the stuck, grated cheese out of it, too. So... it took me three stops to dig cheddar cheese out and grate a mere ounce or two of cheese. Won't do that again. Now I need two different graters depending on the cheese. ... show more

  • Works just the way I wanted
Style: Restaurant Cheese Grater
The grater works just as I wanted. I use it to shred Parmesan over pasta dishes. It grates better than I expected. Just have to make sure to cut the hard cheese first to fit one the device. Very convenient to clean. I use it a great deal

Style: Restaurant Cheese Grater
If you like how the Olive Garden server cranks plenty of parmesan cheese on your plate you will like this device. It's exactly the same one. BTW, works great for any kind of cheese. I've used it with softer cheese too. Just a little more clean up when you do. Cleaning is as simple as spinning the handle backward and it coms apart into easy pieces to clean. ... show more

  • Grate Grater, Good Price
Style: Restaurant Cheese Grater
The media could not be loaded. We purchased this cheese grater after our previous one broke. We definitely see this as an upgrade. The rubber pads on both handles make the grip firm so you don’t slide around as you try to grate your cheese. The metal grate is very sturdy and doesn’t seem like it could bend easily like our previous model. We also really enjoy that the handle can be swapped from left to right so both me and my wife can use it comfortably. The only con we have found for this grater is that sometimes the spinning handle can get pretty tight which makes disassembly difficult. A little bit of warm water helped us get through that. We definitely recommend! Pros: Good handle grip Quality materials Ambidextrous grate action Easy to clean Grates cheese well Cons Can be difficult to disassemble ... show more

  • Not what I expected.
Style: Restaurant Cheese Grater
I was dissatisfied with how the cheese for my recipe grated. It seemed to just warm up too quickly while grating and it then clumped together. It does say it is for hard cheeses. Apparently cheddar is not. I have other Zyliss products and have always been pleased with their products. It was shipped promptly and is of good quality. I would recommend it, but make sure your cheese is a hard type and very cold. ... show more
