  • Bit Hard To Set Up With No Pinion #
Style: Jeep XJ/YJ Dana 30 Front Model 35 Rear 4...
I am trying to install a set of Yukon gears in a Jeep 35 rear. The problem is they no longer give us a pinion depth! I called to ask about it and they said it was a 'warranty' issue, people wouldn't go by the gear pattern! They actually give you a shim spec for the pinion, irregardless of what the original gears had. They give you backlash and you check with gear pattern. So here it is, this is what you have to do: Salvage or buy an extra pinion big bearing and hone it to slip fit, install pinion shim to their spec and install pinion to proper preload. Set carrier in place and shim it to the proper backlash as on the ring gear ( .006ish), then you apply gear grease and check the pattern. If the pattern is off then pull the carrier, remove the pinion and replace shim to change the depth, reinstall pinion to preload, reinstall carrier and reshim until you get back to .006 (you changed the pinion depth so your other shimming won't work) and then reapply grease to check pattern. Repeat steps until you get the right pattern. Now you have to take everything all back apart and press the proper pinion bearings onto the pinion and then do the final assembly! When I do Richmond etc they give me a pinion depth, the man that hobbs the gears in writes it on pinion, I assemble pinion with slip fit bearing, install it and measure the depth, pull it out and add shims for proper depth, check it and pull it out to press bearings etc and reinstall to proper preload - then that is all done! All I do now is set backlash on the carrier. If you measured everything proper when you apply the grease you'll have the prettiest pattern as confirmation. Yukon gear is a bunch of Bitches more interested in covering theirs asses, the instructions are vague and generic worded so that when your gears start howling coming down a hill they'll have an 'out' when it comes to warranty. I love their shim packs but I'll never install another set of their gears. ... show more

Update 7/7/20 Ring gear in the front lost some teeth after a year and a half...Not cool Bolts didn't work. "Master rebuild" is deceptive. It doesn't have the axle bearings and seals. Garage quoted me $550 to do this rebuild. It ended up costing $1150 due to parts not fitting properly but it's done now. It costs more, but go with one of the complete kits preferably with the carrier housing and innards. Make sure you are getting the right series. My 2008 Wrangler rear D44 is series 3.   • Rear pinion seal is wrong, no customer support to speak of

So far I got to installing the rear kit on my 2017 Wrangler Sport. 1. Standard DANA 44 manual shows setting the pinion depth by using shims between the housing and the bearing race. This kit uses the shims between the pinion and the bearing itself. I can live with having to press out the bearing from the pinion, but it gets old real fast. 2. Rear pinion seal is the wrong size. Had to get it elsewhere. 3. Left messages twice with the customer support and technical support on torques and the seal - nobody called back. Stay away.   • A complete rebuild kit, but I think next time I'll go with another brand.

The Good: Everything you need is in the box. Shims/bearings/extra crush sleeve/gear paint/new bolts Instructions are well laid out for someone experienced with this type of install Took two full days and for myself and someone well experienced to completely overhaul both Diffs as well rebuild U-joints in a well equiped Farm Shop. (This included a trip to the parts store, lunch breaks and beer breaks) The Bad: Yukons Torque specs for the Dana 44 (55ftlbs) and Dana 44 JK (125ftlbs) ring gear bolts were misleading. I'm working on a JKRubicon which does have D44 front and rear, however the front is not as robust as the rear. We took the "jk" specs and torqued the front to match the rear and spun a bolt before realizing we needed the D44 specs. The rear gear on the Rubicon uses larger bolts that can handle the load, the front are smaller and cannot. Luckily the supplied bolt failed before the carrier/ring did so it was salvagable. I just think the instruction book should state "Dana 44 JK Rear/Rubicon" The Ugly: Pinion Gear, Bearing Race (and even their chromoly axles) came chipped and damaged. I'd like to blame the axles on UPS as they were wrapped loosely in plastic and could have been banged around when handled. But the race and pinion gears were very well protected, vacuum sealed and wrapped in styrofaom with undamaged boxes. I could only assume this came from the factory in this way. This next fault is above my knowledge so bare with me. According to my mechanic and his boss, there was some sort of pre-written depth that was to be etched on the gears from testing in the factory. They've used this info in the past on TJ's, JK's, Ford's and several drag vehicles to help with their own projects. however were very upset at this kit, a couple homemade jigs were bolted onto my axle housing to confirm their suspisions and after several measurements and some head scratching I was told "throw those numbers out" Performance: I have a 2008 JKR 3.8L w/auto trans on toyo 35x12.5x17 AT's. Before-17.5hwy 1900rpm @65mph with lots of downshifting. After- 16.5hwy/13city 2500rpm @65mph and it doesnt give a damn about hills anymore. In 4-lo it will crawl up mild trails with no input from the throttle, moderate trails take 1/4 the amount of skinny pedal to get up. So much torque to the ground, its amazing. I've put ~2500 miles on these gears with a mix of long hwy trips, city commutes and rough days on the trails and I havent heard or felt any bad noises from either the front or rear and imagine that when I go to 37's it'll still feel like I have plenty of power. ... show more

Yukon 4.88 Jeep JK 2012. Fairly certain mine came used or refurbished. You can see the previous yellow paint. I am in the process of installing them as we speak so will let you know how they turn out. Absolutely exceptional value for what you get. This is a complete kit and am very happy with everything that went into it. 5.13s are super responsive and the build quality is beyond amazing.
