Description

"The most important and accessible mental health book in a generation. Truly life-changing." – Osher GünsbergYour Head is a Houseboat is a uniquely hilarious guide to what goes on in your brain, from illustration sensation Campbell Walker aka Struthless. The only truth we really know is that we're going to spend the rest of our lives in our own houseboat (our head) so it makes sense to make that houseboat as good as possible. The houseboat needs cleaning and maintenance, and it shouldn't be weighed down by junk (our own thoughts and other people's opinions). It has an unreliable and overworked Sea Captain, and a zoo of animalistic desires below the deck who are really steering. But it's your houseboat, so it's probably time for you to cast away and set sail (is that even how houseboats work?) on a journey to understanding it.In Your Head is a Houseboat, Cam demystifies brain functions, mental health, emotions, mindfulness and psychology – but with less complex terminology and more bizarre metaphors. It's a book filled with illustrations, journal exercises and words that will probably hit too close to home. At its core, this is a funny, accessible approach to understanding your head and making it a nicer place to live. Read more

  • Absolutely CANNOT Say Enough Good Things About Houseboat!
Like so many people, 2020 was a year of *really* getting to know my genuine self, and taking stock of the luggage cart of baggage I’m still carrying around with me well into adulthood. I have other books that address the actual issues, but this book so clearly, and *entertainingly*, explains how the brain works on an emotional level, making it easier to understand what’s going on up in my noggin. I have ADHD, so finishing anything other than the first two pages of any book is almost unheard of. Houseboat had me from the first paragraph. I didn’t finish it in one sitting, but I was easily motivated to read at least a chapter a night until I finished it (which, honestly, is more impressive to me that the one sitting thing). Thank you *so much*, Campbell for using all your life experiences to share with others in the same… uh, boat. (Pun not intended, but I’m happy it’s there😜). ... show more

  • Good book for beginners looking to improve their lives
I got this for my granddaughter. Because I’m an avid Kindle reader devotee, I don’t generally purchase hard copies, but this book requires that, I think, because of the great illustration art. I don’t think my granddaughter has looked at it much yet, but I have really enjoyed it. I’m sure she’ll love it, too, when she first gets into it. ... show more

  • Thought Invoking and Easy to Read
A great surface level mental health book. Very easy to read. Would be a great resource to give to a struggling teen. Highly recommended.

  • Geniunely Helpful and Awesome book
This book is for anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed, which is most people. Its creative, filled with amazingly detailed looking art from Cam that just reminds me of my fav childrens books but in a good way. He explains mental clarity in a way thats fun and easily palletable, i never believed in self help books tbh or in listening to other peoples suggestions, idk i was toxic and blinded but you have to want to help yourself to get help, its a lot of effort and time but as he says we are with ourselves our entire life so lets be best friends! Stay disciplined in the journaling exercises included in the book and i promise youll feel better, but sticking to it is the hard part! Struthless lead us to the water, now its up to us to purify that water and keep ourselves hydrated! ... show more

  • I Highly Recommend!
I very much enjoyed this metaphorical look at the human mind. It made such a complicated thing so much easier to understand and less intimidating. I am a natural journal keeper, so I found the journal exercises thought-provoking and helpful.

  • creative love connection
I have read many self help books. This one is a favorite. It was humorous, light hearted, and very relatable. I’m 54 and have learned to love my child self. I find child me to be carefree, Hopeful, playful, curious, accepting, humble, teachable, and grateful. These qualities bless my adult life and make it worth living. We weren’t meant to let go of our child self just heal it. ... show more
