  • Replacement for my 40 year-old Craftsman
Color: Blue
After almost 40 years of use out of my Japan-made Craftsman 391-5180 3.5" bench vise, I finally pushed it too far and stretched the screw and broke the track tracks that the nut slides in. After a bit of research, I decided the Yost 445 4.5" bench vise would be a close replacement. + The Yost's base spins 360º and has two locking screws - one on each side. The base has detents which help keep it from turning without having to crank down on the locking screws. The Craftsman adjusted less than 180º and had one locking screw with no detents on the base, so you had to make sure the locking screw was VERY tight to prevent the vise from turning. + The Yost's lead screw has a fairly stiff preload spring. I had to grease both sides of the washer between the handle and the jaw to make it easier to turn. The Craftsman did not have a preload spring - the handle had more play, but there was less friction. - The Yost's screw appears to be cast instead of machined like the Craftsman. (Think Chinese vs. Japanese quality.) - The screw was coated only with light oil. I gave it a good coating of thick grease, which made it easier still to turn. - There's more lateral movement in the Yost's moveable jaw than I expected - about as much as the Craftman had after almost 40 years of use. - The description states, "Rubber washers prevent the handle from unwanted sliding". However, the washers are too loose to stay in place to keep the handle from sliding under its own weight. I'm sure it'll do what I need it to do, but something tells me it won't last as long or withstand the abuse that the Craftsman put up with over the decades! Why did I not buy another Craftsman - specifically the 51854 - since I have more bad than good to say about the Yost? I don't know. Sears seems to be going downhill fast and I'm not sure they'll be around to honor the warranty if I needed it. Both vises are very similar with the exception that the Yost has a better swivel. The capability, size, weight, price, and warranty are virtually the same. ... show more

  • Nice moderate duty vise (4.5")
Color: Blue
This is a great vise for your garage or basement work bench. It is heavy duty enough to confidently handle moderate jobs and some nice features to make it versatile. The 360 swivel is great, and as other reviewers have stated, these now ship with tie downs on both sides. This allows you to swivel and lock into place without and give. The notches under the jaws also securely hold pipes for cutting. When mounting you will need to be right on the end of the table in order for the fixed jaw to be past your table edge to allow clamped items to go to the floor. To confirm for other viewers, the vise is sold by a Michigan company but manufactured and shipped from China. However, the materials are all very sturdy and it does not feel cheap or flimsy. I secured to the bench with 3/8" bolts, using a washer, locking washer and lock nut under the bench. The holes will snugly fit a 1/2" bolt. The directions provide some recommended under mount support. ... show more

  • This little beast is the real deal.
Color: Blue
I am very impressed with this vise, and expect it'll be in service long after I'm gone. So, yeah, 5-stars well-earned. But DON'T use the paper "mounting template" they provide. It is laughably wrong in so many ways. One wonders who gave it a green light! First, it explicitly states that it is "Not to Scale". Say what? Tell me: what use is a "template" that doesn't match the actual item to be mounted? Especially since the true footprint would easily fit on the page at 1:1 scale anyway! Are they just messing with us? But ... it actually *is* pretty close to 1:1 scale! That is, the distance between the printed holes is pretty close to what is specified; where it says 3-15/16", it actually measures 3-15/16". Even so, the four bolt holes on the *template* form a TRAPEZOID, while the four *actual* bolt holes on the vise form a SQUARE! To be fair, it does correctly call for four bolts of 7/16". Just use the vise itself as your template, and you have an excellent tool forever. Five, count 'em FIVE, stars! ... show more

  • Good vise, but be prepared for a little extra work
Color: Blue
Once installed the vise works just fine and will meet my needs well. I use it for holding chainsaws while sharpening, clamping parts that are being glued together, holding wood while sawing, etc. The only negative is that adding this to your workbench will take a few extra minutes. Ignore the template provided to mark the holes to be drilled for mounting. It doesn't match the vise at all. Do it the old fashioned way - put the vise where you want it and use a pen in each hole to mark where you need to drill. Also, because it's cast metal, the mounting holes are a bit rough. I had to use a small round file to smooth them out before the 7/16" bolts would fit through. ... show more

  • Junk
Color: Blue
Bought this item to help me assemble something that was on back order and today was the first time I was able to use it and it broke before I could even finish using it for the first time. Apparently there is a C clamp inside that holds a spring in position so there is tension on the clamp when opening and closing it, just from closing it once it looks like the C clamp bent due to the tension from the spring and now does not operate correctly and there is no way that I can see to get the spring back over the C clamp. ... show more

  • WOW - GREAT VICE!
Color: Blue
Bought this for a home depot tool box that has a wood top. Got tired of building work benches in the garage only to leave them behind when I move. So, I figured, I'd make a mobile one. I've had two 4.5" vices that Home Depot sells and they don't compare to this one. For a little more you can buy this one and it's AWESOME. Solid as a rock, huge anvil, and the levers are so fluid. Bolted down, this one does not move and there is zero play when you lock it up. It also weighs a lot compared to the other cheap same size vice I have. It's perfect for gun and golf smithing which is what I use it for. ... show more
