  • Well made and it works great
Mechanically this device is very good. I also like the fact that the company supplies drawing with dimensions which does help with installation. Especially getting the clearance holes lined up. The main screw drivers machines well and makes this easy to turn in and I out.

  • Quality produce, but would upgrade.
I’ve been using this vise for about a year and a half now and I would definitely say it works really well. For the price you pay it’s definitely worth it, especially over the big box store vises. Pros: - Very smooth and easy to open and close. Making your life easier when moving workpieces in and out, or swapping out different sized pieces. - you can definitely apply solid torque on the workpiece. You can really crank down on the vise and it holds that position well. Only fear I’ve had is breaking the wood and never the vise itself. - better than the ones you get at the big box stores for both price, size, and durability, from what I saw at least. Cons: - it will bend/flex if you try to clamp on 1 side of the vise. This is honestly the only reason I gave it 4 stars vice 5. Not a major issue or deal breaker for me (as of now), however, I would have preferred a more sturdy vise, but you get what you pay for. When I try and clamp on 1 side of the vise, I have to use a second piece on the other side of the vise to counter the flexing. If you’re looking at this product instead of a much more expensive vise, that, along with a quick release, are probably the only things you’re paying extra for, and it might be worth it if you are going to use the vise for smaller workpieces or working on end grain / generally securing the piece in a verticals position, which is pretty common for most people looking at this style of vise. Overall this is a good product, and I’ve loved having it in my shop, however, if given the opportunity to go back, I would probably just buy once and cry once, and buy a more expensive vise that will not flex or bend. ... show more

  • Great Value for the Price
I purchased the Yost 9-inch vise to add a front face vise to a smaller woodworking bench. The bench is not that heavy so I needed something that would complement the construction without having to engineer a lot of support structure. This vise fit nicely and mounted in between the bench dog holes for a clean installation. I needed a medium duty vise with sturdy construction that would resist racking reasonably well but did not want to pay for the “premium” brands. Yost has been around for a long time, so I was familiar with older products. It took about 2 hours to mount on the bench, taking my time. I purchased a 7/8-inch dowel handle at a local woodworking store and made a face out of 2x6 stock to complete the install. It works the way I need it to. I believe the value for the price is really good in this price point. I would recommend to others. ... show more

  • 9" Yost Front Vise
I started out with the 10" version, but decided it was to large for my needs. For the less than $2.00, I thought there wouldn't be that much difference in size. I was wrong. The 10" vise was 4lbs heavier and took more room to mount. Interestingly, the depth of the mounts were the same, about 4", but the width was wider on the 10". Had to build out the edge of my assembly table to accommodate, but very pleased with how smooth it operates. Used a 7/8" birch dowel for the handle and a couple of 7/8" rubber chair plugs for the handle ends. Used 6/4" cherry for the jaws. Note, no template for drilling the holes, but disassembled the vise and used the mounting flange to locate. I used oversized holes about 1/4" all the way around, to insure a friction free operation. As other buyers noted, would be nice if Yost included a template. Finished it with a couple of coats of rub on poly. ... show more

  • Good vise, tricky install, poor documents
Use a 1/2” diameter galvanized, 12” long “nipple” for the handle, with end caps. Mount jaw to vise with #12 3/4” wood screws. Use a 1.5” hole saw to bore the holes in the jaws. Use 3/4” birch plywood for the jaws. Use 1 1/2” pan head self tapping wood screws to mount the body to the underside of the bench. First time a did this. Lot of trial and error. Tried spade bits first for the bore holes. Bad result, lot of tear out. Threw out the first two jaws I made. Bore holes should be plenty big so you don’t get any contact or binding on the screw or support rods. UPDATE: 3/4 birch ply face jaw was inadequate. It hinged too much when I closed the vise on a workpiece, due to the shortness of the wood screws attaching the plywood to the vise. I upgraded the jaw to two pieces of 3/4 x6” red oak with #12 x1 3/4” wood screws. Very solid now. ... show more

  • Nice low cost end vice
This seems to be well made for the cost. I have been using it for a few weeks and have no unexpected issues. When I say unexpected.... I assumed when I purchased this it would rack out if I tried to use only one side of the vise to hold something. As expected, if I clamp something that only takes up half or less of the clamping area the vice squeezes in more on the other side. This results in poor clamping of the object and I have to off-set it by putting a piece of wood on the other side to maintain even clamp pressure. When used properly, this provides good strong clamping pressure on the object. ... show more

  • Sloppy!
Meh! The clamp's guides are somewhat sloppy with "wiggle room." Basically, the clamp will work but the clamping surface is not parallel when pressure is applied; it angles somewhat out at the top when you have something clamped in. Your workpiece will not have even pressure from the bottom to the top of the clamping surface. The guide rods have some play, which causes this "tilt" of the clamping block I already installed it and attached a custom oak clamping block, so I guess I'm keeping it for now. However, I'm hoping the uneven clamping pressure won't mar my workpieces. If it does then I'll have to replace it with one that has less play in the guide rods and holes. ... show more

  • Good value for the money
A great clamp for the money. It does not have a quick release which I am okay with. I did have a difficult time installing it but it is more likely me than the vice itself. Overall a great product for the money.
