  • A great value
Keep in mind what you are buying. A $125 ceiling speaker should not be compared to a floor standing premium speaker, but this is a pretty decent effort by Yamaha. The speakers back up to the open attic (replacing existing speakers for a whole house music system) and the ceiling sheet rock and the speakers are covered with fiberglass insulation. BTW, Yamaha suggests to cover the speakers with fiberglass to improve the speaker performance. They don't explain why that would improve the sound, I can only assume that this will reduce low frequency reflections off the roof and back to other parts of the ceiling. The speakers have a grille in the back to protect the driver. Overall, these little speakers have a nice build quality. A hefty magnet, some sturdy binding posts for the speaker cables (accepts banana or bare wire) and the crossover circuit with a huge capacitor and some inductors are nicely protected by some clear sturdy plastic cover. I'm driving this with the Amphony Model 300 class T amplifier, a bluetooth enabled, microscopic and cheap stereo amp. The combination produced some soft but prodigious base, midranges that are too emphasized and upper ranges that are pretty crisp and well defined. As i was cleaning up the mess i made from the installation, I listened to Ed Sheeran, Adele and U2 for about half an hour and was quite happy with the details you can pick up in the recordings and once in a while i stopped to just listen to the recordings. Much better quality than background music. Still, there is no question, the sound is hampered by the cheap amp and the open attic installation. I just don't know how much until i play around with the setup. Ok, a small disclaimer: I fancy myself a bit of an audiophile (or at least i spend too much money on my audio equipment) and I desperately try to walk the fine line between endorsing these speakers for their decent performance while not giving anybody the impression these speakers could replace your front speakers in your home audio system. Although my description of these speakers make them appear mediocre, they are light years ahead of the cheap speakers the builder had placed into the home. They are good enough, that i'm considering to replace all 10 speaker pairs in the house with these speakers. It appears to me that they are the right compromise between cost and performance for a whole house system. Before i do so, i will hook them up to a good stereo and see what happens. I will update this review accordingly. ... show more

  • 2 speakers in 1 box!
Great value. Since I didn't install it, I'm enjoying that it works well.

  • Phenomenal speaker set for surround and through house audio
I wanted to have some good solid speakers for the sound around the house these provide that capability hands down. I read some reviews that the bass wasnt that great, but I have no complaint on that whatsoever, even at lower volumes the sound is very rich from low to high. Also when you increase the volume they are very very solid. (And to note I am up there in the audiophile chart :). The installation is very easy. It comes with a mold which is rather straightforward. The covers look very neat in a white ceiling and you almost don't notice them although the size of these speakers in diameter is on the bigger side. Installing and removing is very easy with the screw latches it has attached. Only point of consideration is that since I mounted one on my porch also, which has a vinyl ceiling and since these speakers are a bit heavier, you need to make some thin wood strips to help support and distribute the weight, but that is merely an installation tip and no criticism on this product. ... show more

  • Points Straight Down
The sound quality is good. It doesn't produce the low bass but it does good with the mid range frequencies. The only issues I have is that the speaker points straight down. In order for these speakers to be heard in the middle of the room, the speakers have to be turned up louder than the speakers pointed directly at the listener. This is acceptable unless you end up walking under these speakers or if you are listening to them from non-optimally located seats in your play back room. Some speakers allow you to point the drivers where you want which would work better than the "straight down" path offered here. Also, my wife feels the "white" speaker grills don't do much to mask the speakers location. She is right, they are pretty noticeable. Painting is an option but would include painting the dome... which I prefer not to do. ... show more

  • Decent but blew 1 out of 4 speakers
Fairly cheap quality speakers. First of all, I don't appreciate the threaded terminals, which are a pain when you're swimming in an attic or attaching from a ladder, etc. Everyone else uses quick connects that are spring loaded. I purchased 2 pair and have been using one pair for probably a year as rear speakers. Then we eliminated my awesome floor speakers and simplified our room so I got another pair for the fronts, maybe 2-3 months ago. Everything worked fine and then I upgraded the surround receiver (more power output on the newer one) and noticed the other day that one speaker is blown. Granted, I think it got too much power and for some reason the Auddyssey calibration assigned a low frequency (40Hz) which is lower than these are rated for (45 Hz). I don't blame Yamaha for the blown speaker since I did technically go outside their rated range, but still bummed. Guess I'll be replacing soon with a better rated product. If you set the frequency on these to 80 or 120 Hz you should be fine, and the sound is actually quite good. Very clear and detailed highs ... show more

  • Great indoor ceiling speaker.
I have two sets of these installed and am pleased with them. Yamaha makes good ceiling/outdoor speakers and have become my go-to. They are clean, have decent smooth response, and aren't afraid to deliver when you need to crank it up. The larger cone size helps in this regard. I have built sealed boxes above them in the attic to control the sound a bit, about a 2cu ft box each. Note on installing these-- the mounting arms are indeed delicate and will snap if you don't do it by hand. I've learned this lesson twice now. ... show more
