  • A Rollercoaster Ride
Style: Electric Dethatcher
Hold on tight, folks! I'm about to take you on a wild ride through my experience with the WORX WG850 12 Amp 14 Inch Corded Electric Dethatcher. Buckle up and prepare for a rollercoaster of emotions as we delve into the highs and lows of this turf tamer. With my honest and authentic review, I'll provide helpfulness tips and share my personal experiences with a dash of humor. So, let's get started on this grassy adventure! The Highs: Let's begin with the positives of the WORX WG850. First and foremost, this dethatcher packs a punch with its powerful 12 Amp motor. It effortlessly cuts through the tangled mess of dead grass and thatch, leaving my lawn looking refreshed and revitalized. I was impressed by its ability to handle even the most stubborn patches. Additionally, the 14-inch wide deck provides ample coverage, saving me time and effort. With each pass, the dethatcher efficiently rakes up the thatch, making it a breeze to collect and dispose of later. The adjustable depth settings allowed me to customize the dethatching process according to the needs of my lawn, ensuring optimal results. Another standout feature is the ergonomically designed handle, which provides a comfortable grip and reduces fatigue during extended dethatching sessions. The lightweight nature of the dethatcher made it easy to maneuver around my yard, even in tight corners and tricky areas. The Lows: Now, let's dive into the bumps along the way. One aspect that left me somewhat disappointed was the corded design. While I understand the need for a power source, the cord's limitations were frustrating at times. I had to be mindful of its length and positioning to avoid running over it or accidentally unplugging it. An extension cord became a necessary companion during my dethatching endeavors. Furthermore, the collection bag that comes with the dethatcher could be improved. While it effectively collects the thatch, it is on the smaller side. This meant frequent stops to empty it, disrupting the flow of my dethatching rhythm. A larger capacity bag would have been a welcome addition. Despite its adjustable depth settings, I noticed that the dethatcher struggled a bit when it came to extremely thick thatch. It required multiple passes in those areas, which added to the overall dethatching time. Although it eventually got the job done, a more powerful tine system would have expedited the process. Helpfulness Tips: 1. Before starting, prepare your lawn by mowing it at a lower height to make dethatching more effective. 2. Use the adjustable depth settings to find the right balance between removing thatch and avoiding damage to the healthy grass. 3. Consider investing in a heavy-duty extension cord to ensure freedom of movement without interruptions. 4. Plan your dethatching session on a dry day when the soil is not overly wet to avoid causing damage. 5. If your lawn has extremely thick thatch, consider using the dethatcher in multiple passes to achieve optimal results. Personal Experience: As I embarked on my dethatching journey with the WORX WG850, I couldn't help but feel like an adventurer on a quest for the perfect lawn. Armed with determination and a pair of gardening gloves, I set out to conquer the thatch monsters lurking in my yard. The initial excitement was palpable, as I plugged in the dethatcher and felt the hum of its power resonating through my hands. With each pass, the dethatcher's tines eagerly sank into the turf, revealing a sea of tangled thatch beneath. I marveled at the efficiency with which it cleared away the debris, exposing the vibrant green grass below. It was as if my lawn had received a long-overdue spa treatment, shedding its dullness for a newfound radiance. However, as I progressed, the limitations of the corded design began to dampen my enthusiasm. My otherwise smooth journey was interrupted by frequent glances back, ensuring I didn't trip over the cord or unplug it accidentally. It felt like a comical dance routine as I weaved my way across the yard, dodging obstacles and maintaining the delicate balance between efficiency and cord safety. Nonetheless, despite these occasional setbacks, the WORX WG850 proved its mettle by consistently delivering satisfying results. It transformed my lawn from a lackluster patchwork of dead grass to a vibrant and inviting carpet of green. The sight of my rejuvenated yard brought a sense of accomplishment and pride, making the dethatching process worthwhile. ... show more

  • This works surprisingly well.
Style: Electric Dethatcher
I had my doubts but found it to be very good at tearing out the thatch in my yard. The negatives are the catcher basket is way too small! I took it off and when done tearing up the thatch picked up the crap with my mower. Its worth the money. My lawn service quoted me over $500 to do it!

  • Very effective but appears to overheat without warning and not operate for over an hour.
Style: Electric Dethatcher
I was very impressed up until I stopped to move the cord to a different outlet and the unit just stopped working. I thought for sure it was dead but after about an hour of torrets, it just started working again. If there is a heat sensor there is no indication other than... I'm broke for a while. It did eventually begin working again and I was able to finish the yard. Did not use the bag. Just mowed after to clean up what it pulled up. Filled my mower bag countless times. Immediately fertilized and seeded the yard after. Hoping for a much better yard next year! ... show more

  • Powerful product with a few flaws
Style: Electric Dethatcher
The bagger attachment is garbage which is unfortunate because I purchased this unit for the bagger. Tried it with dry grass on the highest setting (there are 3 settings, +3mm, -3mm, -9mm). That said, even if it did work, it’s tiny and I would probably only get about 10 feet on the highest setting. Hardly held anything then fell off. Kept it off and it worked better. There are two small wheels on the back and two large wheels on the front. The small wheels without a doubt start to hold the grass in the side of the plastic wheels and eventually they stop rolling and you have to pull the grass from the wheels manually so they can spin again. Sometimes the large wheels plug with grass as well. All that said, the unit is powerful and will create bare spots if you want it to. The directions were a bit confusing but it’s incredibly simple to put together. Overall I really the detacher. Two improvements for the manufacturer. 1. Make the bagger at least twice the size and make it so it doesn’t fall off at the first bump in the lawn. 2. The plastic wheels should at least be solid plastic. The open sides of the plastic wheels fill up with grass quickly and stop rolling. Then it makes it incredibly hard to push since this isn’t power assisted. 3. A nice-to-have would be power assisted. It’s already electric powered. Add a small electric motor, like almost all push lawnmowers have, so it’s easier to use. ... show more

  • Wow! Another WORX winner!
Style: Electric Dethatcher
I have a .7 acre lawn that has never been thatched. I have some areas that I want to over seed and so I bought this electric dethatcher hoping to be able to thin out the thatch so the seed would make good contact with the ground. I have had many WORX lawn tools before and they were all first rate. I mowed the lawn down to 1 inch in height and then used the WORX dethatcher. It grabbed about 50% of the thatch on the first run over the lawn without damaging any of the good grass roots. It was easy to assemble and I am quite happy with the results. It is a good value for the money. I was looking at more powerful gas driven units but then I would’ve had another gas engine to maintain. Since this runs on 120 V AC I just plug it in and use it. A good value for the money. It isn’t built to last forever or to dethatch a golf course but for a small lawn like mine it worked well. ... show more

  • Sand in machine.
Style: Electric Dethatcher
Used this detacher for an hour before motor burnt out. Opened top to see if it could be fixed and found sand bag used for weight was ripped open spilling sand through out inside of unit and into motor. Sand bag was pinched between plastic supports inside top cover when originally assembled. Brushes on motor are not replaceable so unit was returned and replaced. Before using new one I opened it and found same thing. Sand bag was perforated by being punched between plastic supports. I removed bag and covered in duck tape and replaced without pinching in supports. After that used for longer then an hour with no issues. ... show more

  • Small yard, it gets the job done, I guess.
Style: Electric Dethatcher
My only complain is it over heats and I’d have to shut it off and resume later. Which could of been my fault or my yard etc. For the price and infrequency you would use this I’d say the machine is adequate. The bag is pointless, but any bag is basically pointless when your dethatching. All and all it’s legit. ... show more
